Changes for Perth

could imagine hussey staying an opener until hughes finds form, or the end of his career. mind you watson should go down the order eventually. i think the middle order bats are easier to find right now to pick for the national team. hughes could come in, but huss has the form. 1st test century as an opener with haydos of course.

Nah, I think Ponting when he finishes captaining the side, and IMO is ready to retire. Diminishing returns and a long decline over the past 4 years. He's been brilliant but after 150 tests I suspect he's nearly done.

the decline of the team would be taking its toll on him as well... i don't think he's too far away.

Not that you'd want Ponting mentoring you in the finer arts of captaincy either.

in an ideal world White is probably challenging for a position in the test side at number 6, but there's not much leadership material around the place (who is not 35 years old). Clarke is groom by CA as the one, and looking at the side now there is no one else that could come close in doing that job in the foreseeable future.

you don't think his recent statements of wanting to hang on til the next ashes are of any influence on his decision (or not) to retire?

also, the possibility that kat and huss may retire at the end of the summer and that north may well be gawn may leave the (possible) incoming captain with a team full of youth and no one to lead it?

Or a fresh slate to start again, and a genuine change in era.

I think ponting was foxing like warne early in 06.

He had dreams(some might say delusions) of reuniting the 09 ashes losers and stomping all over england in 2010 and then retiring from test cricket on top just like mcgrath and warne four years ago.

can someone tell me who michael slater proposed as changes for perth?

"
Slater also backed the return of swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus, but was against retaining left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty.
"Unfortunately, Xavier Doherty doesn't go to Perth. We've got Nathan Hauritz coming back," Slater said on Channel 9.
"I've got Steve Smith in the squad. I've got (NSW paceman) Mark Cameron in the squad. Doug Bollinger is not that fit (but) I don't think he comes out of the side.
"The dropping of Marcus North, as well ... I know it's his home ground, but I'm not seeing the runs. Hughes comes in to open, Marcus North out, Haddin batting six and Hauritz is in there as well."

Theres a website somewhere were people are actually donating money to Warne to try and convince him to play

Yes, it was NSW bias that saw him averaging over 50 in first class cricket at the age of 20. It's NSW bias that sees him average 54 after 39 first class games. It's all a big NSW conspiracy that a 22 year old whose records shits on other potential opening batsmen candidates might get chosen for the test team again.
Players should be picked on form not on what they did in the past. He might well of averaged 54 after 39 first class games but the fact remains he has only one score of 50+ this summer at an average of 25.

If you can't score runs at first class level you sure as hell can't do it at test level.

so slaters team (in what we can assume he wants):

watson
hughes
ponting
clarke
hussey
haddin
smith
johnson/siddle
hauritz
cameron
bollinger

harris
johnson/siddle

i got an idea, lets pick Hauritz at 6 to replace north, both part time spinners and he cant do any worst with the bat.:)
Not a bad idea, but then would be still get rid of Doherty? and who would replace Doherty?

We haven't picked players based on form for a fair while now, why would you think it would change now?

This would be my team (I know I am dreaming)

Watson
Hussey
Ponting
Clarke
Marsh
Khawaja
Haddin
Smith
Harris
Hilfenhaus
Copeland

Just take a punt on Smith as the spinner, he can only learn

From that Beer article...............

"There has been a bit written in Australia and people have been asking me about making a comeback," he wrote.

"All I can say is that it is very flattering to hear those words."

He didn't say no! :p
