My 12:

Watson
Hughes
Ponting
D.Hussey/White
M.Hussey
Clarke
Haddin
Smith (with lots of ordinary spinners may as well have one that can bat).
Harris
Copeland (can't ignore his stats)
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger

12th man depending on Bollinger's fitness. I'd have gone Starc is he was fit.

Siddle no good, and I'd like to see Johnson actually "hit the pitch" before even thinking about picking him. At 1/517 and 6/551 bowlers are basically bowling sh1t. Except for Harris the bowling was a disgrace. Similarly in the 2nd innings of the !st Test.

As for the bats, Hughes for Katich obviously, and while i'd prefer D.Hussey to replace North I wouldn't object to White if they somehow decide to look at him for captaincy duties after Punter invariably get the @rse at the end of this Series.

Watson
A B de Villiers
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Hahim Amla
Haddin
Johnson
Hauritz
Siddle
Dale Steyn

If the POMS are allowed to have 3 ring in South Africans then so can we ;)

Steyn won't help much as you have sh1t bowlers like Johnson and Siddle in the team. Remember 1/517 and 6/551?

Need to win 2 of the last 3 so gotta make some bold choices and horses for courses. Mine would be.

S.Marsh (339 @ 84.75 this year)
M. Hussey
M. Clarke
U. Khawaja (424 @ 53 and the future ponting of our team IMO)
R. Ponting - Needs to go down a little I think to take the pressure off
S. Watson - I have been an advocate of him opening but think we need his bowling in this test as we cant get enough wickets atm
B. Haddin
S. Smith - Better bat then bowler but see him as more of the 5th bowler with Watto doing more in Perth. Also gives him experience at this level. And lengthens our batting as our tail crumbled this test.
R. Harris
B. hilfenhaus
S. Tait/D.Nannes/S.Harwood/B.Lee - I know all these 4 are technically retired but call them all and see if any would play if selected. Need somone who will bowl regularly 150kph + to unsettle the poms as they look to at home against the bowling when its less than 145 all day. This bowler would only bowl 3/4 burst over spells.

With the Doctor: Tait (et al), Harris - Mainly these 2
Into the doctor: Hilfy, Watto (both can move it into the breeze), Smith, Clarke.

- Hughes before Marsh is fine with me too.

- Johnson's out of sorts but could be worth the punt, always bowls well at the WACA and had that 8-for against the Saffies 2 years ago.

- The off-spinners are pointless in this test for me, McDonald would be great but is unavailable, so let Smith bowl his leggies as required and rely on the to-date underperforming quicks to do the job on this of all wickets.

6 bowling options seems excessive but they'll probably end up bowling 1000 overs between them.

it kills me to say it, but short of a shane warne comeback, i cant see us winning this series. we're being thoroughly outbatted and out bowled.

i dont believe in throwing the baby out with the bath water. i think any time a team of youngsters is hammered repeatedly, it isnt all positive.

doherty is a failed experiment. nice kid, ive played against him, but doesnt have it.

a week ago everyone was calling for johnsons head, now people want himback? it makes no sense, he needs a game or two for wa.

whilst i dont want everyone over 30 dropped i do think that where spots open up, they should be filled by the new generation. theres no point replacing katich with klinger, thers benefit replacing him with hughes. adding khwahaja or smith at 6 has more benefits than d hussey. adding copeland is more beneficial than adding clark.

and ffs, we dont have to pick a spinner! all ours suck!

hughes
watson (stability needed, but should be 3 or 4)
ponting
clarke
hussey
smith
haddin
harris
siddle (cant drop him after brisbane... yet)
hilfenhaus (i still think hes our best)
copeland (hes had a mcgrath like start to shield cricket)

dark horses could be cowan to open. other dark horses, if smith is picked at 6, is a bowling allrounder at 8 - mcdonald, butterworth, m marsh?

Here is my way out of left field suggestion. It involves contacting Shane Warne and offering him the captaincy if he plays the rest of this series. Ponting gets dropped. This improves our captaincy a lot, and also our spin bowling.

Hughes
S. Marsh
Hussey
Khawaja
Clarke
Watson
Haddin (would replace with Paine if possible)
Harris
Warne
Bollinger
Hilfenhaus

Bollinger was not good in Adelaide, but he has been our best bowler of the last 12 months. He and Hilfenhaus are our best opening bowling partnership. Harris is dangerous and would be a great first change bowler. North is out, Katich is out injured. Huges and Marsh come in for those two, and Khawaja comes in for Ponting, who is no longer a good enough batsman to be picked for that alone. Also, he'd be unlikely to be willing to play under Shane Warne as captain.

I would think that this side would have a better chance of winning a test than the current one. Is it realistic? I don't know. Probably not.

So the more realistic option is to bring in Marsh and Hughes for Katich and North, have them open, and have Watson bat at 6. Ponting is unlikely to give up batting at 3, but he should. Pace attack is as above, spinner - pff, I have no idea maybe Steve Smith - he wouldn't do any worse than Doherty, but he might well make runs. In that scenario I'd like him to bat at 6. Another option would be to have Smith replace North, keep Watson as opener to open with Hughes or Marsh, and pick 4 quicks.

Edit: Also want to see SOK playing for NSW, so if Smith plays for Aus, they might consider picking SOK and Ritz for NSW. I would also be happy to see Trent Copeland play for Aus, he seems to be bowling magnificently at Shield level.

the idea has been floated in a few places, but getting guys like warne, mcgrath back in the side is like drunk-dialing an ex from 2 years ago and asking if she'd like to watch an episode of hey hey it's saturday with you. have to move on. you know she went off like a fire-cracker, but she's a bit older and a bit fatter so there's no knowing how it will go. need to swallow our pride and take our beating.

we should be blooding youngsters to make their series win feel as hollow as possible ;)

Hughes - Stunningly obvious replacement from the crocked Katich. Should have never been dropped in the first place.
Watson
Ponting - Almost last chance saloon. Should give it away at the end of the summer regardless.
Clarke
Hussey
Smith - Great shield performances with the bat last year, performed well with the bat against Pakistan, runs in difficult circumstances in the Australia A game in Hobart, and a decent knock last week at the WACA where he should have pushed on. Handy bowling option. Not good enough yet as a frontline bowler, but he is capable of picking up a wicket or two.
Haddin
O'Keefe - Doherty usless, Hauritz wasn't good enough, might as well look forwards. Sick of picking plodding spuds instead of looking towards the next generation of Australian cricket.
Harris - The only bowler to perform on a flat Adelaide wicket. Thought he was impressive.
Hilfenhaus/Bollinger - I'd prefer Hilfenhaus, but whatever.
Copeland - His statistics don't lie. Excellent, consistent bowler. What is it? 57 wickets at 18? Get him in there now.

Ferguson fails at the SCG.

Is it safe to say he's out of contention for the rest of the summer?

What a surprise that is.
The guy is rubbish at the long form of the game, but I guarantee people on this forum will still demand he gets a go.
No question he should be in our limited overs sides, but not near our test side.
Hughes in for Katich, Marsh in for North.
Then I would bring in Copeland, a guy that bowls a tight line, creates pressure and takes wickets.

Ha, ha.

Stick with this line-up. Let them try and get themselves out of this mess. Why taint young careers? The selectors have been insistent that this batting line-up is the best we can field so let them prove it. Hughes or Khawaja will come in for Katich though unless they take a left-field punt on Shaun Marsh.

He should be out of the equation, has a very average record, doesnt make big scores and when given chances this year (Aus A game and recent 4 day form) has failed.

I think there a numerous players ahead of him in regard to test team.

He is impressive for 1 day cricket though

My team:

Watson
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Khawaja
Haddin
O'Keefe
Harris
Siddle
Bollinger

I would play McDonald ahead of Khawaja but he's injured. Not sure what to do with the bowling... Copeland and Cameron in? Cameron was 12th man for NSW the other day, can you play him for Australia? Although I've included Smith, so I guess you could...

Need combination of wicket takers and strong tail end batting

Watson
Hughes
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Smith
Johnson
Hauritz
Harris
Hilfenaus

focus has to be on wicket taking

hughes in for kat
smith in for north
sok in for doherty
copeland or hilfenhaus in for siddle (leaning toward hilf cos i think he'll make use of the doctor in perth)

doug deserves another go and perth should suit him

after the ashes we seriously need to drop watto back down the order where he belongs. he'll bowl more and go on to make more big scores when he's not knackered from bowling

Swap Hilfy for Bollinger, and I think that is a pretty realistic lineup for the next Test.

I expect Siddle to be rested under their rotation policy, will do alot more damage in Melbourne and Sydney than Perth where he has rarely bowled well

Johnson to come in for him, may even see Hilfenhaus come in for Doherty. Bollinger and Harris survive by default

Marsh would probably be the best replacement for Katich but I dont think he has even been opening so Hughes by default and England will be delighted

Bring in Ferguson - I've been reliably informed that his 6 years of mediocrity have past him and this year he is in stunning form.

I mean 254 runs at 36 is world class batting right?

Making it past 50 once in 8 innings? Against a powerhouse Warriors bowling line-up

Bring him in I say - ignore the blokes who make runs - go with the crab
