Changes for Perth

Null and void when the replacements aren't much better.

Better the devil you know...

Problem is, we don't know. Some people, Michael Vaughan is a classic example, perform much better in international cricket than first class.

We don't know who has the temperament for international cricket out of the state batsmen as only Hughes is ever given a go.

Bollinger was injured, and if fully fit, was always going to play in that first test, ahead of probably Hilfenhaus. Get the feeling Siddle was always going to play once Hauritz had been shown the door also.

As, if the national side is as shit as everyone is making them out to be, and I think 8 pages full of 4+ changes for the side for the next test reflects this, then I would assume they'll lose either Adelaide or Perth, or perhaps both, which will leave two perfectly acceptable dead rubbers to blood players in and see what they have to offer.

Why risk the Ashes on playing blokes who haven't shown anything yet? It's the Hollioake twins in the fourth test all over again.

"I can use my height and hit the right spots, try and do a bit with the ball both ways and out-last the batsman."

"I try not to do anything too extravagant; it's just about keeping it simple and creating pressure."

Trent Copeland talking about himself.

That's what we need first and foremost IMO - a McGrath/Stuart Clarke type who gives the batsmen nothing while also picking up wickets. All of our current attack (bar maybe Watson) bowl way too many 4-balls.

I'm not talking about wholesale changes. That never happens in cricket unless there are many injuries - eg our bowlers during the year. But why do the selectors think that there are no batsmen at least worth a go over someone like North? Is everyone else really that poor even though they haven't been tested at that level?

Though god knows I'm hoping North pulls a ton out tomorrow.

Big Shield game starting tomorrow, Blues and Backs.

It's almost a given someone from that game will play at the WACA Thursday week, perhaps more than one, although I'm warming to the idea of putting Shaun Marsh into that top 6 come the 3rd test.

Assuming Katich is fit.....

Katich
Hughes
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Watson
Haddin
Smith
Harris
Siddle
Hilfenhaus

Hughes for North. Having Watson down the order takes pressure off him for his bowling. With the current attack we need him to bowl. Besides, as an opener he has been good for 50 odd runs a knock but I don't see him batting through an innings and making a BIG score. Hughes has deficiencies but is good enough to play.
Smith for Doherty. Unfortunately Doherty doesn't look good enough. Smith is young and in the light of no other strong contender should be given a go. Perth will be tough for an inexperienced leggie, but just put him in a back him.
Hilfenhaus for Bollinger. Siddle is lucky but his six-for in the first match gets him another go. He's had one good match and one shocker - this will split the difference. Besides, I don't know if dropping three of your four speciallist bowliers is going to achieve a lot - especially after dropping two the match before. Johnson looked shot in Brisbane and has to get some mojo back in his bowling for WA before he comes back. Bollinger probably isn't fit and was bowling pies by the end of the England innings. He shouldn't play. Hilfenhaus was a bit stiff to miss Adelaide IMO. Deserves another go.

Still a pretty weak team. None of the four bowlers would get a game for England. If Katich misses then Ferguson should come in and Watson stays opening. But a rebuild is imminent so throw two young players with talent in - Smith and Hughes - and let's see what they have.

I've read a bit about him as well. He sounds smart, trained himself to bowl as he didn't want to be a wicket-keeper anymore and he works as a coach.

Can't see how Bollinger warrants a spot after Adelaide. Siddle also had a shocker, but he won't be dropped for a long time after his hattrick.

Would like to see a bowling lineup of:
Smith (a bit of that "x-factor, a leggie who is aggressive, England need to be bowled out twice so we need attacking bowlers)
Harris (did OK in Adelaide, our best bowler atm by a mile)
Hilfenhaus (shouldn't have been dropped, no one else can actually swing the ball)
Copeland (time for a change, Siddle just doesn't threaten, has been dominating the Shield and it's time to be rewarded)

Worrying that nobody there has pace, but theres nobody in Australian cricket who does at the moment (except Tait, but he obviously isn't going to play another test). We must win a game somewhere, Perth is the place to do that, 20 wickets must be taken!

The batting lineup probably won't be changed much. Marsh or Hughes in for Katich. If North fails tomorrow, then one of Marsh, Ferguson and Khawaja should be in

Well Id imagine there would be a few changes for the 3rd Test. But then you just never know when in comes to our selectors. Id go with this team, considering that Katich is out injured.

Watson
Hughes
Khajwa
Clarke
Hussey
Ponting/White
Haddin
Harris
Hauritz
Bollinger
Hilf

Id make Ponting drop down to 6, or else Id drop him from the team altogether. Its not like he is a master captain and his form has been woeful. If he wont make the drop down Id bring White in.

Have to eat my words a bit with Hauritz, with either he or O'Keefe doing the spinners role.

Hughes
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Ferguson
Smith
Johnson
Harris
Bollinger
Siddle

Hughes (recognised opener) -> Katich (injury)
Ferguson (either him or Khawaja) -> North (shitkicker)
Smith (can do as much with the ball and is a very handy bat) -> Doherty (not good enough)
You'll have a hard time finding support for Johnson -> Haddin here!

*Assuming Katich is unfit
**Assuming North fails tomorrow :(

*Shaun Marsh (Pivotal test being played at home helps him pip Hughes. Been in stellar form. Better partnership than what Hughes would bring, a good defensive foil for Watson.)
Shane Watson
Ricky Ponting (c)
Michael Clarke
Mike Hussey
**Steve Smith (Real X-Factor. The Poms would attack his bowling, leading to wicket taking chances. Made 70 here in the SS last week, so has form. Time to give him a chance to see if his batting is up to Test cricket.)
Brad Haddin (+)
Nathan Hauritz
(Bowled very well here in the SS, and the Freo doctor will greatly assist his bowling in the afternoon sessions. A must IMO)
Ryan Harris
Trent Copeland
(Impressive, from what I gather a bowler who is adept at keeping it tight, which is what we need)
Doug Bollinger (Lucky to be in over Siddle, but I think the left arm variation is a plus. Will produce footmarks for Hauritz to bowl into late in the match...although admittedly Swann will benefit too)

OUT
- Simon Katich*, Marcus North**, Xavier Doherty, Peter Siddle
IN - Shaun Marsh*, Steve Smith**, Nathan Hauritz, Trent Copeland

Assuming Katich and Clarke fit.

Katich
Hughes
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
O'Keefe
Harris
Copeland
Hilfenhaus

Or, keep Watson as an opener and either Khawaja at 3 or Smith at 6 -both replacing North.

Hughes
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Ferguson
Smith
Johnson
Harris
Bollinger
Siddle

Probably going to want a wicket keeper in their somewhere, and FFS will people stop putting Smith in teams as a frontline, he is a top 6 batsman that can throw down a few overs when needed, not even close to being good enough to be a frontline bowler.
Just no to Ferguson hasn't done anything to earn a spot in the Test team.

Smith's first class record isn't all that much worse than Doherty's. And Smith is 21.

I do agree though, no need to play him at 8 when he can play at 6.

Clarke

Cameron Whites has a 172 first class wickets at 40. A better average than Hauritz, Doherty and Smith. He doesn't bowl enough these days.

Katich
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
McDonald
Haddin
Johnson
Harris - if fit Butterworth
Hauritz
Siddle

Out
North - too many chances
Bollinger - just not up to it, looked pedistrian

Comments
McDonald this season has scored 3 centuries at an ave 93, bowling 7 wkts @ 36.
Johnson has in the past done well for Australia and although he looked ordinary in Brisbane he looked a lot better than Bollinger.

Luke Butterworth is a somewhat forgotten man. But has a first class century to his name and has taken 19 wkts @ 17.36 so far this summer.

Possible bowlers
Mark Cameron - in form
Trent Copeland - young and future star also in form.

I can't understand the Phillip Hughes comments by everyone. He's been there failed and doing nothing at shield level. So far this summer has 1 score over 50 (81) and is averaging 28. Why bring in a batsman whose form is as bad as the one your dropping. They only reason they'd do it is to put off the English by getting them to laugh.
