Phillip Hughes - 13.56 average (53.04 strikerate) from 9 Shield innings so far this season, including 4 (from 10 balls) and a duck (from 9 balls) in the current match against South Australia. Hasn't even scored a 50 this season.

Considering what led to him being dropped from the Australian team (doubting himself and lacking confidence in what got him there in the first place), he shouldn't even come under consideration until he's scoring heavily and brimming with confidence. The selectors are just setting him up for further failure.

I hope Shaun Marsh tons up against Queensland (19 from 72 balls currently), because he deserves to replace Katich over Hughes based on current form.

Ooooh, I'm feeling confident now. We have an opener averaging 13 and a middle order batsman averaging 25. The NSW media talk these kids up so much that people really start believing it. I can't even pick up a Daily Telegraph anymore.

How many first class games has he played for WA? His been the best spin bowler in district cricket for the past few years now and the Vics refused to play him. Micky Auther rates him and said if he was still coach of RSA and Beer was in that system he would give him a go.

It will be an amazing story to go from playing district cricket to Australia in the space of 6 months.

the only bemusing pick for me is hughes over marsh.

Come back to me when Marsh opens the batting for WA..he averaged about 2 opening last season!

Cameron Boyce desperately unlucky to miss- 12 first class wickets at 38, how can the selectors continue to snub him??????:D:eek:

I agree, if they were going to "punt" on a spinner I would have punted on Boyce!:thumbsu:

why would you pick hauritz?

3/106 in the current shield game (combined innings)

i'd prefer them to try at least bowlers like doherty rather than persist with this fill in bowler anymore because that's all hauritz is, or was.

the only bemusing pick for me is hughes over marsh.

I'm not saying we should pick Hauritz. I'm saying we shouldn't pick Johnson. He and Bollinger should be sent back to State Cricket and when their mojo's return, they then get named in the squad.

As for Marsh, he just got out for 20. Which is better than Hughes, but geez, it'd almost be better to move Clarke or Ponting to open and bring in D Hussey or someone (Not saying we should, but we are struggling). We have an issue or 2 with openers currently.

Form > reputation.
The selectors don't see that. :(

What selection are you moaning about? Beer is the weird one..but no spinner is screaming pick me. Smith is the best young batting allrounder in the country coming off an 8 wicket haul in the Shield match.

Hussey would open out of our current lineup.
Has played that role in the past for WA.

Just the general state of the side.
Hughes average is pathetic. Marsh could've easily got a game.
Smith is a risky pick and quite frankly Ferguson fits the bill as a batter better than he does at this stage. The only reason I'd back Smith in is if Beer doesn;'t play so he can bowl.

If Beer doesn't perform in Perth and Melbourne, he could be next off the production line in Sydney.

Boyce has massive potential. I actually would be an advocate for this selection.:thumbsu:

Surprised to see Beer come in for Doherty, thought they would have gone with Hauritz. Beer has been quite impressive for WA this season but not sure if he's test quality, only time will tell. The copywriters will have a field day with his name at least.

Not surprised to see North dropped for Smith, although I thought being at North's home ground may have saved him.

There are NO other openers around in form. I swear I have heard every excuse in the book about Hughes, but tell me another opener that is an option. Sean Marsh is and always will be a no4 batsman. Ferguson in between his hundreds has made 5 scores under 20, I like the bloke but he is going like North was- 1 score in 6 is not good enough! Personally I would have picked Sean Marsh in the no6 role. I would have played Hauritz though.

8 wicket Haul that included 5 tail enders.
