I think the advantage with playing Rocky head to head against other players instead of another one of our mids, is that Rocky gets involved, he knows how to rack up the ball, and he can kick a goal. He is a player that the opposition player can't ignore, and it makes them more responsible as well. As opposed to a hard tag, where the player still just tries to play his natural game, he just always has someone in his back pocket. Rocky's opponent will have to play a bit defensively on him, and make sure they know where he is as well. I don't think any of our other mids would command that kind of attention from someone, even if they have a better defensive game such as Redden.

I think some savy lions supporters could make some money this season. Geelong were 1.30 for the win (I thought that was surprisingly high for a team that played in the PF last year. Tells me the sports betting companies are a bit unsure of where we sit. I'd have it even money for this weeks game imo. I'm pretty confident of getting the win actually.
We're $9 for finals now. IIRC we were under $6 before the season. They were competitive losses to top 4 sides.....
Should win on Saturday too, but I just did my tips on the AFL website and 87% of people have tipped the Suns!

Based entirely on past performances, I'd have Raines as a lock to come into the side and play on Ablett.

Raines has an excellent record against the great man. Not only has he consistently blunted and frustrated him but somehow managed to be a fairly constructive and even damaging player himself.

Some players , for some weird reason, seem to have the wood on opposition "stars" and I put Raines/Ablett in this category.

I reckon Ablett would cringe at the sight of Raines going straight to him from the get go and for this reason I'd have no hesitation in playing Raines this week.

Random thoughts...

Just realised that we have been without potentially the 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice leading/marking forwards for the first 3 rounds. While you could argue Staker, Mcguane and Mcgrath arent forward superstars, would papa or close be playing if these 3 were available. I wonder if the forward line plans have been thrown into a little bit of chaos because of injury. Makes Mayes effort even more exceptional.

Wonder if Bewick isn't worth a full game if just to get some sort of experience in the forward line.

And at the risk of being a massive douche, Yeo would have been a good in for Golby.

In response to a few comments, whatever you think about Richie's best position, he still looks to be the best at breaking the lines and attacking the balll out of defense. Its the reason why I'm disappointed with Adcocks games so far. Hasn't been the worst but as captain needs to take charge of these situations when we are stuck in the back half. Would like him to try to control the situation more and drive the attack as he did last year. And stop playing for bloody free kicks.

Might have to come over for this match. Hopefully a much higher quality game than last years QClash at Metricon which was a shocker.

Why is everyone so dam sensitive when it comes to opposition supporters coming and posting on our boards. My god if it isn't positive everyone gets so dam but hurt over it. He has an opinion, he is allowed to express it. Even some positive comments get smashed by some of the members on this board. Everyone chill out this guy is entitled to voice his opinion, no need to tell him to piss off. For a group of grown men you act like children sometimes.
Not sure if this is referring to me but I was just replying with my personal opinion.

I definitely get the impression that these rounds are all about drilling in Leppa's game plan. As a result he figures to keep playing them how he wants them to play, and Raines doesn't appear to be in those plans. As a result I'd be very surprised if he was an inclusion this week (which pretty much guarantees he comes in).

I get the point about the game plan.

Still, when you badly need a win, pragmatism has to kick in at some point.

After the first game when we had our pants pulled down we have taken this game very seriously. I feel our pressure was intense in the subsequent games, which helped us get over the line. Have the Suns improved? It will be a close game, especially as it's on the GC.

I don't think Leppa wants to play a tagger. We have a decent tagger, who can do a good job in Raines, and we've left him out to go more head to head to opposition mids, backing ourselves to win our fair share of the ball. Will be interesting to see if Raines comes in, as he has had decent form in the 2nds, or if Leppa continues to ignore playing a dedicated tagger, and just throw someone head to head.

I don't mind it as a way to go. If you can win the ball first, then you don't need to worry about tagging the opposition player. Ablett will always get his 30+ touches, i just want him to have 1 sec or less before getting tackled for each and every one of them. Simply too damaging if he gets time to work his magic.
I wonder if that would change if we had a tagger of the quality of Crowley, can shutdown and niggle and use the ball pretty well. Unfortunately for Rainsey he does one well but not the other. I think Rocky will be the in, not sure on who is out. Given we probably need to go like for like it would seem to me that Zorks goes back forward more and probably Taylor comes out, possibly Close.
Is Harwood over his shoulder complaint? Everyone has him penciled in but I haven't heard on his injury.

Just a general statement to everyone on the board. I am not saying its just lions supporters, every teams supporters take everything way too personally on this forum. But you guys are the only ones I can say anything to without my throat being ripped out. North and Essendon posters are by far the worst.

I don't see it as taking anything personally but rather being passionate, doesn't mean I want to belt the guy whose opinion I don't agree with, would be a really boring forum if everyone had the same viewpoint!
I welcome different perspective and the passion that comes with that and don't get upset in the slightest if anyone disagrees with my opinion
That's the beauty of forums like big footy
Reckon we could do ok this Saturday
Not going to tip yet till I see the line ups but we are doing much better than the doomsday experts predicted at seasons beginning.

Welcome to supporting Brisbane, Robbo Snr. Always doing a little bit better than commentators assume :)
Yeah I reckon we're not too bad at all, can't afford too many injuries though, most would agree here??
But core is really good and talented, reckon 3-4 years away from real top 2 contenders?
Thoughts??

Agree, our depth was what really suffered with the five that left for home.

I think that we are maybe a couple of years and 2 or 3 smart acquisitions away from consistently challenging and beating the top teams. I think that people forget that we haven't been an aging team for a couple of years now, and are in fact among the youngest, yet still compete well against the experienced and finals-hardened teams.

Going head to head with Ablett is a huge risk IMO. That said sometimes tagging him doesn't work anyway. Raines has done a job on him before so he should probably get a game this week.
You don't want Rockliff having to play as a defender when Ablett goes forward. That wouldn't end well.
