There's a saying which is fitting here, you can't make chicken soup out of chicken shit. When you have the likes of A.Selwood, Priddis, Ebert, Embley, Dalziell, Mcginnity, S.Selwood to work with then your always pushing it up hill.

That doesn't mean he's immune to criticism.

The advantage Burns has is he's not one of the old boys like Sumich, Metro and Brodbridge represent and will at least be a fresh change and will have an outsider looks on things rather then the same old shit we're used to.

The "same old shit we're use to" won us a premiership. For all we know, Burns' ideas of the game could be horrendous. There is no evidence to suggest otherwise.

At the moment I'm very much better the devil you know then the devil you don't.

I just don't think we have enough experience or our best players fit and on the park to take much out of our performances at the moment.

We need at least our next core midfield to be between 50 and 100 games. Primarily Swift, Ebert, Masten, Selwood and Naitanui with the continued development of Shuey and Sheppard until we start really judging their impact.

Those of you that have read my comments on Ash Smith in the past, will know I have been keeping a close and often critical eye on his progress.

He was excellent on the weekend. He made space and used his long kicking to set up play very well, including a 65m drop punt that hit his teammate on the chest without having to break stride. It was Shannon Hurn quality. Furthermore, he used his pace to cut through the West Perth lines a couple of times. Also, he showed good judgement and courage to go back with the flight of the ball a couple of times. It was the type of game I have been expecting from him since he came to the club. However it must be noted, he played too wide of his opponent on a couple of occassions and it cost a couple of goals. Overall, I'd say his creativity offset the negatives.

In terms of selecting Smith for the Eagles this week, I have a couple of concerns:

- This is the first game I've seen him run with the ball, through opposition lines. I suspect at AFL level, he may revert to dishing off the ball rather than taking the game on. I'd prefer to see him consistently take the game on at WAFL level before he is asked to do it at AFL level.

- He plays quite wide of his opponent. By this I don't mean he neglects to mind his opponent, only that he often plays 5-10m in front. This is ok at WAFL level and allows him to set up play on the rebound, but at AFL level, against a team that can pin-point passes, he could get taken to the cleaners as we saw happen against Collingwood.

Overall, Smith has certainly improved this season and on the weekend he took another substantial step IMO. I'd be inclined to keep him playing in the WAFL and let him perform at this level consistently, so when he does get the call up, hopefully in a few rounds, he has the confidence to back himself in.

Nice review - however I think he'll come in - he was clearly on the selectors minds last week - and racking up 30+ touches would be favourable i would have thought.

FWIW - McGinnity was one of our few winners, well maybe non-losers on the weekend. Although he has been out of form - Davis barely got into the game and given the amount of ball that went down there - that's a reasonable effort.

I hear the complaints (and agree) that we can't afford to have too many of his ilk in the side - but with Scooter actually emerging - we only have McGinnity and ASelwood as defensive stoppers.

I personally would like to see Stevens and Smith in.

Thats going into a game thinking way to defenisvely. Name another team that plays 3 taggers? That defensive mindset is what kills the team.

When we have all of our midfielders and defenders available there wont be room for all three. I'm guessing that when we do the max we will play with is A.Selwood and one other. So while there is the room in the team the match committee are giving both the chance to cement their spot in the 22 against the same opposition so both there chances are equal. I suspect one is ahead of the other and when Kerr, Masten, Shuey, Houlihan, Stevens etc are all fit, all three are not going to be in the same side. Hence round 1 when we had a variety of players to chose from S.Selwood was left out.
