Prediction Changes for Rd 3 vs Brisbane

Find it odd that Ah Chee survives given he’s a) not that good and b) not a forward. I’d rather a worse player who is a small forward playing small forward over a slightly better player who is (supposedly) a midfielder. Ah Chee isn’t good enough to be a square peg in a round hole. Hope he plays well for everyone’s sake.

Wouldn’t have dropped Nelson personally, but excited to see Rotham.

Game will be decided by effort a hell of a lot more than it will be decided by these changes.

Disagree with you totally about Brander. His game on Saturday was not nearly the worst. He did some good things, took a couple of strong marks, he is a good kick, he made a couple of poor mistakes also which blotted his game. Obviously has skill and size, there were reasons we took him #13, don't see the McDougall comparison at all, give him time. McDougall was actually a talented footballer and athlete who for some reason didn't realize his ability.

Brander has yet to fire a shot in an AFL game. When it became obvious he wasn't the key position player they imagined they tried to turn him into a wingman. Played a number of games in the WAFL last year in that role and did very little. Somehow come 2020 he's a regular on the wing. He's Masten's replacement but gets less of the ball and turns it over just as much. As a Geelong boy we should have bundled him up in the Kelly trade. Meanwhile Jake Waterman, who has proven he can play at AFL level, is nowhere to be seen.

He’s a lovely kick when kicking long and through the ball, but his attempts to finesse short passes are painful to watch

I wonder why he's not playing in his position? Best spine in the league have anything to do with it? He has played 5 games and most of them have not been easy. Last year in his three games he was thrown everywhere. If he gets to 50 games he will be heaps better than Masten, he is already better than Masten now. I would like to see Waterman get a game, but there are too many talls to fit in. I think Brander has a higher ceiling than Waterman.

Personally, I reckon (hope) that bringing in the extra tall is because our coaching squad have been paying attention to Charlie Cameron. Last week he was tearing Freo apart early on: they tried a few blokes, until he was shut down by Griffin Logue.

Last year, he struggled with the taller lockdown defenders after Richmond showed how it was done using Astbury.

Schofield locks him down, as I called for earlier in thread.

Barrass, Rotham and Hurn/Shep rotate through the KPP.

Nelson will be back in the squad soon, we won't go this tall in defence all year.

I don’t know about obvious. They tried him for about half his rookie season as a forward, then as a back, sometimes alternating weekly, but about 50/50 split for a year. Then they’ve tried to get him involved as a winger.

Doubt they’ve given up on him as a KPP because they think he isn’t up to it - it takes more than a few months for young KPP’s to develop and they didn’t stick with that for any time at all, moved him into the wing ASAP. Doesn’t mean to me that it’s “obvious” he’s not KPP. Most 18 year olds aren’t, and that’s the last chance he got at it.

Is Cameron still injured? I'd prefer him over Petch.
Crazy Vozzo said he should get some minutes in this weeks scrimmage against Brisbane, so you would think next week might be too soon, round 5 not out of the question.

While I know that where players are named doesn't dictate where they play etc. etc. I can't help but be dismayed at seeing Redden named on a wing, Sheed on a forward flank, Ah Chee in a forward pocket, three tall players on the bench...it just doesn't feel like the balance is there right now.

Cannot agree mainly based on person observation. I cannot see where Brander's improvement is coming from. He's been around a few years now and does not seem to have developed anything that tells me he'll make it. I'd love to be wrong, but while he gets games and fails to contribute a guy like Waterman is twiddling his thumbs when I think he should be playing.

Because it was foretold in an age before time began that the Ah Chee brothers would engage in battle for premiership points so order could could be restored across the universe.

Can't believe people are still potting Masten in retirement.

Huh?

You may not think he deserves it but the coaches obviously see something in training and match Sims they like, and on that basis he probably deserves an extended run in the team to get comfortable/ experience. Waterman plays a different position and will get his chance.

I figured the team would be mostly kept the same, but would not have guessed that Nelson would be dropped.

We are good enough to win this on talent, but whether the effort is there is something that remains to be seen.

JK to kick eleventy goals.

He can take an overhead mark, he can take a contested overhead mark, he can kick more than 40 m, he can front a tackler.
At this stage Brander isn't fit to tie Masten's boots, or sell them in the team store.

He's got a long way to go to contribute what Masten has to this club.

Must be training the house down. Like a batsman who dominates in the nets but can't make a run in the middle.

Surprised to see such vitriol dumped on Brander playing game 5 as a young tall. Unfair to peg last week's loss on him.

I rate the kid from what I've seen in the WAFL. But I think experimenting with playing a tall marking wingman, in probably the worst conditions for marking in the country, isn't really giving the kid a chance. And just a really dumb idea imo
