Changes for Rd 6

We lacked a structure and a presence up forward and Pav was choked. That is the advantage of having Taz in the side even if he isn't dominating.

Taz will be desperate to perform and IMO was playing well against Richmond before Solly got his noggin in the road.

Plus we need McPharlin in the backline this week to win.

Schammer was very poor, Matt Carr was useless, Josh Carr was terrible and might as well not have played. Thornton can't actually defend an opponent, altho he is handy running forward - don't know if this is enough to have him in the team?

Harvey has publicly said he wants to settle the team now and stop making so many changes but I think we need a few this week.

OUTS: Schammer, Matt Carr, Thornton, Macca.
INS: Des, Taz, Mayne, Brock.

Browne or Head might be a chance if the coaches back up their words and drop Josh for his crap efforts this year, esp. last 2 games which have been very very poor.

Where is the love for Josh Head ?.

He is ripping up the WAFL and should have got a gig before Hinkley ( although Hinks did pretty well in his debut ).

I can see Warnock, Mayne and Des being players they want to bring in, but I am prepared to add Head to that list.

Who to go out ?. M Carr, Crowley ....... then I struggle, Gilmore ?.

I would retain Macca, he has hardness and a heart ( hear that Dessie !!!! ). Thornton has a role in the backline, but can Head do a similar role. Although I believe youngsters deserve 2 - 3 weeks to have a go, maybe the Black Ducks will get Hinkley back.

Just throwing some thoughts up.

I think we need to differentiate between "heart" and "skills", neither Macca nor Scham are overly skillful but have plenty of heart and passion. We need to focus on skillful execution not the repeat of the typical Freo skillset.

Whilst Macca came back this week in part for his heart, we needs skills against Cats and speed. I would therefore give Hincks preference over Macca or Schams. Des can come in for the other. Matt Carr should go as well for Mayne, Josh should revert to his shutdown best.

So you must think Mundy is a superstar.Schammer has both heart and skills, everyone makes mistakes but people focus on his.

As I said in another thread - there are way too many stats in footy these days. Freakin' KPIs - I get enough of this crap at work - I don't need it shoved down my throat at the footy!

A 1 metre handpass that hits its target is "efficient". But when that teamate is only 1 metre away and udner more pressure than you are, then it's a crap handpass in anyone's language.

Scammer was very good in the first half, and IMO was one of a very few that were keeping us in the game BUT, his last 10 minutes were diabolical! He couldn't have been worse IMO. He panicked, he was selfish, and his skills were appalling. He needs to go back to the WAFL and concentrate on the basics and hit targets.

We can not afford to carry blokes that panick under pressure, and stuff up simple kicking and handballing skills. Geelong will absolutely cane us for poor turnovers and missed shots at goal.

Need pace! Need midfield runners! Skill level as well but the No.1 thing we need is PACE!
Out: Macca M.Carr. J.Carr Bell Solomon
In: Foster Obrien Mayne Peake Duffield

I know i said we need pace but we need another avenue to score as well and i would have to drop Thornton for a Murphy Campbell or Bradley.
Complain all you want but Geelong are a fast and fit team. The young kids should be able to run with them all day.

Have you watched Peake in the last month? He is awful. Ibbo has his spot and I can't see him giving it back anytime soon.

Duffield turns the ball over every second possession - Geelong would have a field day with him out there.

Foster has played 2 full games coming back from a back injury - needs more match fitness before he's ready.

Solly wasn't great yesterday, but we need his size and strength out there - Geelong have pace and skill, but they also have big, strong bodies. That's one thing none of the kids have yet.

As long as our players are breathing on their oppisition player creating a one on one contest at least we wont get flogged compared to having slow and built players aint going to do a thing IE look at last year. If you are going to go in with the type of team your saying then keep the Carr brothers Macca Solomon put in Mark Johnson Campbell and Headland and play the same tactics like they did against WCE in last years Derby. Rough and hard on the players. If you get reported who cares. It may pay off who knows. But i think we stand a better chance in matching there speed. Other teams have big bodies and skills level that are better than Freo and are still get beaten for their lack of speed on the ground.

Brock isn't listed among Peel's best in The Sunday Times so he probably won't play against the Cats even though I think he should.

Peake needs atleast three games for the Sharks before being considered, he has been shithouse. Black should play atleast a fortnight in the WAFL too, we have a surplus of HBF's anyway.

Macca and Matt Carr almost certainly won't both be droped after one game, and I thought Macca was okay. Matt Carr was crap though and only played about 50 minutes. Why would you select a 30 year old who lacks pace with poor skills then play him for less than half the game? Would have made much more sense to unleash Brock for half the game.

I was surprised that many had Thornton in their best 22 pre-season and I still struggle to see what he offers. He has pace and a long kick but doesn't hit many targets, doesn't win contests because of his light frame and struugles one out inside 50 (he got murdered by Goodwin on the lead yesterday). Of the 4 half back flankers on our list that play at Souths I'd have him at the bottom of the pecking order behind Gilmore, Head and Black (obviously Black is the most talented of the 3 but IMO he needs a couple of games at WAFL level to find touch).

Mundy didn't get a lot of the footy yesterday but I just watched the tape and his commitment was good. Leave Johnson forward, keep McPharlin back, give Tarrant one more run at East Perth, and return Mundy to half back.

I reckon these will be the changes.
In = Headland Mayne
Out = Thornton Matt Carr

That will leave us with a pretty good line up, although I'd play Brock ahead of Ibbo.

Byron and Browne got a fair bit of the ball for claremont against subi in last years GF but as always it was like watching them play for the dockers.

A lot of the ball but inefficient execution

As I said on another thread need to close geelong down make it a scrap man on man pick players for specific tagging/closing down roles.

Can't afford a shoot out

Ins: Headland, Tarrant, Mayne

Outs: M Carr, Thornton, hinkley.

hinkley had a solid debut but i think we would be throwing him to the wolves playing him against the cats and he would end up with less than 5 touches. J.Carr should be on notice and hopefully he gets given the job of putting bartel off his game this week

head unlucky

I don't think I advocated playing either of McManus or Carr in my post, I was only saying that the guys you were looking to bring in were not likely to be able to provide us with the pace or disposal that you're looking for.

If you're going to have the kids out there, they need support. Solomon has had a slow start to the season, but deserves a couple more opportunities before he's under pressure to keep his spot - there are plenty of others who should be out before him.

Mayne deserves to come back in if fit, as does Headland. I'd also bring Tarrant in - we need a stronger forward structure and he provides that. I wouldn't mind seeing Warnock back as well. As to who to drop, I'd probably go for Hinkley (bring him back after the Cats game), Gilmore (Warnock is a better option), McManus or Schammer and Thornton. Carr gets a reprieve this week as I think he will be required to attempt to shut down at least one Geelong player, but he'd want to do well or he'd be out the following week.

Where is the love for Josh Head ?.

He is ripping up the WAFL and should have got a gig before Hinkley ( although Hinks did pretty well in his debut )

Id love to see Josh Head be rewarded not only for his form this year but managing to get back on an AFL list. I think he should replace Gilmore.

Outs: Gilmore, Mundy, M. Carr, Thornton
In: Head, Headland, Murphy, Mayne

Geelong are NOT a fast team

They have one fast guy wodjinski or watever hes called.
The rest are medium paced all very solidly built players not slow an not speedy.

What makes them look quick is they shephard each other, work for each other an kick the ball long to 1 on 1 contests.

They get the ball then try to move it on as quick as possible with long kicks an always try to play through the corridor.

for some reason they keep playing duff off a half back flank when I think im right in saying that at wafl level he's playing in the middle and they have this guy(head) tearing it up (correct me if im wrong) off a half back flank at wafl level who would slot nicely into that spot in the team and put duff in the middle .

ins:tarrant (to take pressure off pav if nothing else)
mayne
des

outs: macca
mundy
m .carr

would love to see head and duff come in to the possies i mentioned above but cant see it happening also brock is playing well but harvs is alluding to not many changes this week.

Can Kepler play at FF? with Taz on a flank and Pav at CHF (or on ball occassionally). Murphy and Campbell have been tried but not worked out (I prefer Campbell of the 2). Taz is also not playing well enough to hold down a key pos and Pies fans always said he was really a flanker.

Better, quicker delivery would also help.

I think we need McPharlin down back most games.

:thumbsu:

Anyone of Tarrant, Bradley or Murphy + the other 2

Would be ironic to see Kep get a chance to exorcise his demons from Anzac day 2007.

I'd keep Mundy this week - at least he chased with vigour this week & wasn't just jogging...ditto Josh Carr (although he was still poor)

PS Is Hedland's knee ok? Is Mayne's calf ok? If not...would look at Brock & Head. Still wouldn't play Hinko this week either way...although there was a lot to like...he has a BIG future
