Out: Dunn, Bartram, Bell, Robbo, wheatley

In: Valenti, Rivers, Holland, Whelan, morton

Yze, Moloney, very very lucky to keep there spots their experience and our lack of depth will keep them in.

Should line up like this.
B: James McDonald, Garland, Rivers
HB: Silvia, Warnock, Moloney
C: Buckley, Mclean, Green
HF: Davey, Miller, Bate
F: Wonna, Holland, Yze
Mid: White, Jones, Bruce
Bench: Frawley, PJ, Wheatley,morton

Go Dees!!

Through Thick n Thin

According to Dean Bailey(on the MFC website) Newton and Paul Johnson are going to be our new targets inside 50 and Neitz is going to coach(or help) the forward line and mentor Newton and PJ.

And McDonald said Davey is a very good chance to come back in.:thumbsu:

And i really hope Maric comes in aswell, i think he's gunna be a very good player.

In - Rivers, Whelan, Holland, Davey, Morton, Valenti,

Out - Dunn, Bell, Robbo, Bartram, Miller, Jones

Miller is like a thumb in the hole in the dam, he's not the long term solution

Bell needs to go back to the seconds for a while. We need more out of Jones - he's got more to give but we are not getting it yet. Try Rivers, Garland and Wheatley up forward at various stages and see how we go.
miller out? thats bloody ridiculous he is one of the only ones (most weeks this year) who has put his hand up and said, look ill give it a crack. LAST WEEK WAS CRAP FROM ALL...

bartram unless injured should not leave the side... Jones? man what are you smoking... leave dunn in... put him forward.. dutchy is apparently injured... i have heard

This is what Bailey said about our forward line on MFC website:

But Bailey remained upbeat the permanent absence of Neitz and long-term non-appearance of Robertson will present opportunities to some emerging Melbourne goalkickers.

"[Michael] Newton, Paul Johnson … there could possibly be more of a chance for him to be more of a forward," he said.

"With the disappointment of David and Russell being the two key forwards, a great responsibility and a great deal of pressure will now go onto someone like Col Sylvia and [Brad] Miller and certainly Bate.

"Young Newton will be around the mark next week. The forwards have got to stand up now, and we've got to get our delivery into the forward line better.

Bailey didn't say "PJ will play forward" it was "there could possibly be more of a chance for him to be more of a forward".

"Could possibly be more of a chance", the use of 3 different variables in that sentance is actually pretty funny, it's what you tell the media when you aren't really sure. So while it might happen, but I wouldn't count on it.

Actually i was talking about this:

"Neitz is set to help coach the new forward line, and mentor Michael Newton and Paul Johnson - the two players Bailey nominated as the club's new targets in attack."

It's from the article about the 150 heroes dinner.....

Still it's just an article on the MFC website which is just an arm of the AFL website and doesn't quote where Bailey said so. So it's most likely just the other quote i mentioned being taken out of context that PJ will definitely play forward.

I honestly hope PJ doesn't go forward, i know he's got a decent kick and while he's quite mobile for a ruckman, but i'd compare him to a clydesdale taking on a thoroughbred, he might get up to some pretty good speeds, but he'll look average against the quality defenders.

Juice and if all else fails holland. The paddles fell out of our forward boat long ago, so might as well invest in some future. That aint going to be PJ

B: Bartram Frawley Warnock
HB: Bell Holland Rivers
C: McLean Bruce Moloney
HF: Sylvia Newton Green
F: Dunn Miller Wonaeamirri
Ruck: White Jones McDonald
Inter: Yze P Johnson Whelan Wheatley
Emer: Maric Morton C Johnson
In: Newton Holland Rivers Whelan
Out: Robertson (inj) Bate (inj) Garland Buckley

Ins and Outs depending on fitness:
Whelan for Bartram
Rivers/Newton for Robbo
Morton for Wheatley
Davey/Maric for Buckley

B: Whelan/Bartram, Warnock , Garland
HB: Sylvia, Frawley, Bruce
C: Bell, Moloney, Davey/Maric
HF: McDonald, Rivers/Newton, Bate
FF: Wonaemirri, Miller, Green
FOLL: White, Mclean, Jones
INT: P.Johnson, Yze, Morton, Dunn

Rivers/Newton, Miller and Bate to float through CHF and FF, with Green leading from the square only.

Sylvia to go back, i think his decision making, spoiling and composure is better than Bell, whilst Bell should be given a more attacking role to build up some confidence and could use his tackling pressure through the middle. Yze to pinch hit in the forward line. Rivers to back and Garland forward if it doesn't work.

Some matchups:
Sylvia on Medhurst
Bruce on Thomas
Dunn on Pendlebury
McDonald on H.Shaw
Whelan/Bartram on Didak
Bell on Swan
Warnock on Rocca
Frawley on Cloke

I like the idea of Sylvia playing on Medhurst. He can certainly match him in the air and on the ground... but something tells me Bailey will play him exclusively as a forward with Robbo gone for the year.

We need to ATTACK this week as against the Saints we had too many players in the middle playing a tagging role, or being FAR too worried about their opponents, and that hurt us. We need to make sure we still run back hard defensively when we don't have the ball, but they must have the freedom to run forward in numbers.

Not the time to experiment IMO, play the best small defender we have on Medhurst. So Bell or Bartram most likely.

The other one I'd throw up would be Colin Garland, hes quick enough to play on the smalls.

What else is left to do? We are 1-9. I would have thought it was the PERFECT time to experiment and see who can cut it and where.

What's this about McLean and Bate being injured? Haven't heard anything about it. If you guys lose those two, in addition to Robbo, I think it should be a terrible day for you. However, in saying that, I was more confident against Geelong than I am for this match, because we all know how these matches usually go.

Ktlk to have Frawley ahead of Garland for this week u must be watching a different game to me Frawley is S Truggling needs a run at Sandy. When Garland gets beaten at least he shows some emotion and looks disapointed in his efforts body language can go a long way.

I'm all for experimenting but there's a fine line between experimenting and just plain ____ing around with the team.

For the love of God, we have all been lamenting Rivers' absence from the team and when we finally get him back I hear some calls to play him forward.

Let's not get carried away with which options are realsitic and which aren't. The logical thing to do is to lock down as many positions as possible which make sense and go from there. We have the opportunity to build a pretty damn good defence and Rivers is pivotal to it. The youngsters were good against the Hawks but that is one game and they had a heck load of help from other players coming back into defence. We need to consolidate that for the rest of the year - not ____ around with it. IMO Garland should be left in defence, he puts in a good contest and has great energy.

The forward line definitely needs some experimentation but we have enough prospects without pilfering our defenders to do it. Go with your strengths IMO don't rob Peter to pay Paul. Instead we need to put a bit of pressure on some of these other guys to perform up forward, at least we'll know if they are any good or not a lot sooner. The only player I will toss up is Paul Wheatley. He is genuinely not required in defence so insted of let his talent go down the pisser just put him up forward and see if he can take a few marks and bang a few goals.

Great post RandB, plenty of excellent points there. If our backline can look something like this:

FB: Bell - Warnock - Garland

HB: Wheatley - Rivers - Whelan

Then it's something to build around. Plus it does have the ability to actually DEFEND against good teams. Question marks still remain around Bell but I'm hoping it's more down to a lack of confidence than anything else.

That should be our back line this week.

Hopefully next year we can slot someone like Cheney into it, maybe at the expense of Bell or Wheatley moved up onto a wing. There's also the potential to play Grimes off a back flank and develop him into a Heath Shaw type running HB, so we could push Whelan deep into defence where i believe he plays at his best.

I see our backline next year and for the next 5-6 years:

FB: Whelan - Garland - Warnock/Frawley

HB: Grimes - Rivers - Cheney

We're struggling a bit now, but it's pretty hard to stop goals when the opposition has 15+ F50 entries a quarter. Our backline is starting to look solid and looks the goods long-term with only Whelan over 25.

I'm worried about two things:

1) How the hell are we going to manage their 4 crazy short people in Thomas, Didak, Davis and Medhurst?

2) Ruck contests - White & Jamar/Johnson against Fraser & Bryan/Wood? I'd be very disappointed if we didn't win this particular area of the game

Although I have said otherwise, I don't like seeing Bartram and Bell out of the team as we're all aware of what each are capable of. But when you've got Rivers and Whelan waiting in the wings, it's hard to make a choice.

In: Rivers, Whelan
Out: Robertson, Frawley

If fit, Davey needs to be in the team as well, possibly at the expense of Buckley

I think this may actually play into our hands, we've typically struggled with the talller players so bring them on.

Bell - Didak
Garland - Medhurst
Wheatley/Bartram - Thomas/Davis

Easy.
