Ever seen a club tag Gaff?
Gaff's biggest issue at age of 21/22 was his inability to break a tag. Then in 2015 he broke out and became close to untaggable and there was barely a player that could run with him. His impact has died down a bit but when he is on(like the dogs game) he will cut sides up.

Ah 2015, I remember it well. The year all the coaches finally agree'd that tagging was dead. It was the best of times. It was the worse of times.

2015-09-10

"WEST Coast is not going to change its midfield set up in order to quell the influence of Hawthorn star Sam Mitchell, Eagles coach Adam Simpson says.

Mitchell has had an outstanding season and he was the difference in the Hawks' 14-point win over the Eagles in round 19 at Domain Stadium.

He gathered 36 possessions, 15 contested, and had a game-high nine clearances. But Simpson said the Eagles won’t tag Mitchell, as they haven't tagged anyone this year with the exception of Carlton's Chris Judd after quarter-time in round two."

It worked out perfectly [for Hawthorn] But Paul Roo's wasn't buying it.

"October 6, 2015

HAWTHORN star Sam Mitchell might have run riot and tag-free in Saturday’s Grand Final, but Melbourne coach Paul Roos believes it may well be the end of such damaging midfielders going unchecked. Many commentators were left scratching their heads over how Mitchell — who finished second in Norm Smith medal voting after collecting a damaging 34 disposals — was left to his own devices by the Eagles."

Enter 2016. Round 1, Geelong defeat Hawthorn. Mindful of his recent acquisition of Paddy Dangerfield and content in his own recent victory over the Hawks Chris Scott tired in vain to extend the truce one more season after Simpson doubled down on his GF strategy in Rd.2 2016. Leading to defeat and calls for the tags to return to the game.

"STOP Mitchell, stop Gibson, stop Hawthorn?

Not quite, according to Geelong coach Chris Scott.

Negating the influence of the Hawks is difficult, and is much harder than just stopping one or two players — even if said players are gathering 37 and 44 disposals respectively, as they did against West Coast on Sunday.

Scott, who led his side to a 30-point win over the reigning premier in Round 1, said the dominant Hawks are exactly that — dominant — and will pounce at any opportunity to punish their opposition."

It sounded great in theory, and had worked in practice too. But Nathan Buckley concurred, sending alarm bells around the competition that maybe there was something to this tagging stuff after all.

"Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said while the notion of tagging a player isn’t dead, it is certainly “harder to do”.

“The gap between the best and worst player inside is smaller than it’s ever been,” he said.

“(Hawthorn) shared the ball really well, and there’s a thing they do better than any team in the comp and it’s possess the pill and look after it and force the opposition to defend. You can move a body to fill one spot but (you lose them somewhere else).”

Annoyed that no-one listened to him weeks before when he said this

Kane Cornes was now even more annoyed

"Mitchell can be stopped, says Cornes
THE last man to shut down Sam Mitchell says he’s “staggered” the Hawthorn ball magnet isn’t tagged. Retired stopper Kane Cornes"

Still, the Bulldogs weren't buying it:

"WESTERN Bulldogs defender Dale Morris says the Bulldogs won’t tag Hawthorn star Sam Mitchell in Sunday’s blockbuster at Etihad Stadium.

The Hawks ball magnet has made an emphatic start to the season, leading the league for disposals after racking up 36 and 37 in his opening two games.

The Eagles’ decision not to tag the four-time premiership player despite his dominance has sparked more commentary around the opposition’s approach to the four-time club best and fairest winner."

Finally, it happened:

"2016-05-20

Tom Mitchell's ability to tag Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell out of Friday night's clash was crucial to the Sydney Swans prevailing, according to coach John Longmire.''

Tagging was back, according to the Herald Sun

"Taggers are back in fashion
JUST when you thought it was safe to go back into the midfield — the tag is back. Clubs are once again practising footy’s dark arts"

So tagging was back, hurray. Simmo hadn't yet realised he had an excellent tagger in Mark Clutchings ready to emerge so did the logical thing and traded in the bloke he couldn't tag. Sam Mitchell becomes and Eagle. Clarko went one better, packing Sams bags himself and giving his spot to the kid who broke the drought. Welcome to Hawthorn Tom Mitchell. He's ruthless like that. Respect.

Long story short, Gaff used to get tagged when taggers tagged but didn't get tagged when taggers weren't tagging [and went AA] but now taggers are tagging again Gaff isn't getting tagged because he's just not that good anymore [or maybe because we bought in Sam Mitchell, tag magnet]

The moral of the story is sometimes I have too much time on my hands. Also I just don't like Gaff that much so will pot him quite freely, some say he goes alright though. I'll concede he's at least earning his spot in the 22 every week and at best a low grade problem.

So Partington gets 28 touches and a goal again. Still won't get a call up next week.

Hasn't put those numbers up 3-4 weeks in a row. Not his fault. It's the WAFL's fault. :p

Masten on the other hand hasn't put those numbers up, but it's not his fault. That's also the WAFL's fault. Straight back in!

God hope the poster on the freo board is full of shite

Given that 2 held over from the EP game it's possible someone is doubtful. Could be Redden if Yeo doesn't get up. Would have to run with Fife when in the middle.

So Masten and Cripps are on notice that more of what they have recently dished up and Parto should be in.

With your strike rate, we shall call you Kim. Kim Hackdorn.
1 out of 3 ain't that bad. Plus I said mutimer will debut and he debut the following week. So you could put it down to change of mind at the last minute.

Elliot Yeo, omitted?

Club has posted a video of him, said he tested his knee out and it didn't come up. Reckons if the game was a couple of days later he'd be OK so should be right for Collingwood next week.

Injured then, makes more sense. Cheers. Not enough runs on the board to escape the omitted tag
