Strategy Changes for Round 19 v Kangas

Yeah was a nice day in Hobart today but will be a bit crap tomorrow. Not the sort of game I'm used to watching in Perth.

Need Sheed to step up
Up against a tough midfield so the stage is set.

Pity we couldn’t tackle this match with our best side but I just hope all of our players show some fight

Team will do fine, we've had a few key players out before, still got balance, everyone playing their role.
If we lose, just a small speedbump, still got a gap on Pies. Port might overtake them.
Be interesting to see how this line up performs with the ins and re-arranging.
Go Beagle Boys! No injuries please.

Even with the outs we should be winning this.

North are the worst team in the competition for getting beaten on the outside, whereas this season we've become a team that spreads and moves the ball extremely effectively.

Hutchings to Higgins and Yeo to Cunnington. Win these two battles and we will win this match very comfortably.

Losing both Jetta and Shuey will cause us problems as North will try to close down the match and they are two of our best receive and run-on players that create space.

Sheed to resume his stoppage midfield role; Venables to high-half forward to accommodate Petruccelle.

Waterman to roam up the wings and Vardy to play CHF for the majority of the match with Darling deep forward.

My biggest query is over fielding three key defenders in probable wet conditions - however if the Kangaroos are looking at playing a tall forward line with Brown (200cm), Daw (195cm), Wood (192cm), Atley (189cm), Ziebell (188cm) and occasionally Goldstein (201cm); then the additional allowance makes sense whilst providing additional support for Barrass as he reacquaints himself with top-level football.

With the above in mind, I would not be surprised if we see a greater amount of adventurous license given to Cole and Duggan in particular during this match.

The forward setup across large portions of the match will likely include: Darling, Rioli, Venables, Petruccelle and Cripps - expecting to see some serious run and chase forward pressure from the team in this game.

Win this and we go two wins clear of third with just four matches left to play.

******* absurd that we need to fly almost 5 hours away to ******* Tasmania as a Western Australian team.

This shit has pissed me off for years. Sick of WA sides flying to NT/TAS every year. We also had to play in shitty Canberra this year despite Giants only being scheduled there 3 times across the whole season. They should make the VIC teams travel to these spots and give both of us more MCG games in place of them.

It's something that both WA clubs will have no choice but to endure whilst the status quo remains in place.

The way to stop it from happening is for the following to take place:
  • reduce the number of Victorian-based teams to a maximum of six.
  • introduce a fixture where each team plays each other twice, home and away.
  • remove clubs from claiming rights to host matches during the season proper at venues outside of their home state (i.e. North @ TAS [Hobart], Hawks @ TAS [Launceston], Demons @ NT). All this does is provide incentive for those clubs that draw lower away support (typically clubs from interstate) to be slotted into this fixture as it will be seen to make greater financial sense to do so.
Unfortunately none of those above are going to happen in any of our lifetimes (or if ever).

Incredibly, it used to be far worse - when we first entered the competition, it was not uncommon for us to play away for three consecutive weeks in a row; with the last leg always being either Brisbane or Hobart.
Also Hobart games are now at Bellerive, which is a fantastic venue, albeit open to the wind off the Derwent. Back then games were at North Hobart Oval, which turns completely to mud when it rains.

Little wonder what remains to this day the worst result in the club's history was a wet slog at North Hobart after playing away at suburban Princes Park (before the upgrades) in muddy conditions the previous two weeks.

There's currently 15 games a year in Hobart, Launceston, Ballarat, China, Alice Springs, Cairns, Darwin and Canberra. 15 different teams should have to travel to those games. When you include the 7-8 games at Geelong a year there's no excuse for every team not to have to travel to those venues at least once.

I wouldn’t mind the Eagles playing Canberra as much to be honest. Ground is good quality and the flight is shorter than Sydney, Brisbane and Tassie. It’s more the length of the trip to Tassie that sucks. Direct flights help with that a lot though.

I was on the flight with the team this week and it actually only took 3 and a half hours thanks to a strong tail wind.

The notion that we shouldn’t have to travel to all ends of Australia while certain other teams get 15 games at the MCG I agree with wholeheartedly though.

Getting there is not the problem - it is the return flights which is always longer than the outgoing flight due to upper atmospheric westerlies.

Extra hours in the sky add up and interfere with recovery programs and opportunities. I might add we have been travelling for so long now we probably have got it 'down pat' as best we can.

I couldn’t agree more with this. It might be called the AFL but everyone knows it is still the VFL.

The fact that the AFL didn’t even contact the non-Victorian clubs regarding extending the grand final at the MCG to 2057 shows their utter contempt for teams outside of Victoria.

The fact they refuse to change the fixture from 22 rounds down to 17, so the fixture is fair and everyone plays each other once, further reinforces their lack of concern for the travel WA teams, and to a lesser extent QLD teams, have to make.

The irony of the situation is that if their were less Victorian teams - six ideally - their teams would be stronger and games more interesting.

In a perfect world we would have a 14-team competition with everyone playing each other twice.

We need a billionaire to come along and set up a breakaway competition.

On ABC Sports Talkback yesterday morning Richard Goyder (AFL Commission Chair) said he had contacted all non-Victorian Clubs and all were in favour of MCG deal.

Even if they were against it the AFL line will be to say they were with it and those clubs against it would be told to keep their views to themselves.
It’s all political and pretty much anything that an AFL official or AFL club person says will be what they want us to hear not the truth.

Crap morning in Hobart today but should clear up a little before the game.

I'm pumped AF!

my wishlist. ..

- sexy Willie swervability skills
- Petrol to chase down some players
- Venners 2-3 goals
- Duggan to run through some players
- YEEEEOOOOOOO long range goal
- Sheed 15 contested possessions

We have Shuey and jetts out

That’s speed

A slower ground out game will suit us

Get the four points and get out of this joint alive

Non Victorian clubs were also promised greater access to the MCG, but lo and behold - we weren't allowed access to train there before the Collingwood game.

A 17 round fixture is NOT fair. Who you are drawn to play away v home - and who gets the extra home game - would make a massive impact on which teams make the 8. Agree with everything else though.

no fixture is ever going to be fair. If you split the home and away matches over two years it will work out.

When you have a country the size of Australia trying to be play a state-wide competition, the distance in travel will always disadvantage states like WA.
