OUT: Cornelius, Martin, Polinghorne, Maguire

IN: Banfield (to tackle/pressure in the forward line)
Leuey (Into the ruck, Longer to full forward)
Lester (3rd tall / sit in front of Walker)
Polec (Sub to finished off the Crows)

Many are calling for Raines to come in and take Dangerfield; he's too strong, fast and can take him to the forward line. A no from me for Danger, but Thompson is just as vital and would suit Raines more if he comes in.

I like...I think we need to play 2 small forwards. Green will get burnt out much like banfield did being the only pressure small forward

My dim recollection is that Dangerfield gave Raines a bit of a bath last year. But hey, we still won.

If we didn't tag him, what would be the other options? Send someone like Rich or Rocky to go head to head to him?

I'm sure we'll send Raines to Danger, but I wonder how someone like Hanley would go head to head.

I don't remember much of last year's game, but Essendon tagged Dangerfield effectively in round 1 (although he was nowhere near as quiet as Rich). Adelaide came out in the press saying their mids are going to give him a lot more support going forward (just like we said about Rich).

Anyway my changes would probably be:

Out = Longer; ??? (Maguire if injured with a rejig of the team; otherwise one of Polkinghorne or McGrath or Cornelius - I generally think we should be going with a more experienced team but these three were stand-out poor performers in round 1)
In = Leuenberger; Raines

As Haso said, I think people need to be aware of how inexperienced our team is already. I will update my thread from last year when I get some time because I would like to look at the experience level of every team in the league. However from round 1 I believe we went in with 8 players with less than 25 games experience as oppossed to the Bulldogs 7. I think both figures are pretty high compared to some teams - so I would be pretty wary of adding even more inexperienced players to our team at this stage.

I could be way off but I think Raines might have been alternating between Dangerfield and Thompson all day.

I think he was on Thompson to start with before being moved to Dangerfield.

yep round 1 was piss poor , no argument. but over reaction is not the answer i can see only 2 changes max
leuenberger if fit is a cert and maybe a replacement for maguire if he isnt fit.

as always the majority go for the standard scape goats ie polks and ace , thats the way it goes here heroes one week villans the next. browny didnt set the world on fire but do we call for his head ?

think we should give it another game before we get the hatchets out

Correct Gibbo, Dangerfield towelled us up in the 1st QTR, I am pretty sure Patfull was on him then, they definitely moved Raines to Dangerfield later and it did curb his influence.

If Leuie is ready, straight in for Longer. I think Raines has to come in and we'll need another big body to replace Maguire if he's unfit. People have said Patfull will be able to handle Jenkins and I'd agree but after the Bulldogs match I'd be wary of approaching a match with no plan B and if Jenkins can manage to get ascendancy on Patfull then we'd be stuffed because Merrett must be on Walker. Ideally you'd want a third tall who can leave their opponent and chop out Walker's incoming balls and block his leads anyway. It would be good to get games into Clarke but he might not necessarily be up to it yet. McKeever's been in good form and may also give us some flexibility in the forward line. Lisle also had a great game and has experience down back.

Longer > Leuenberger
Maguire > McKeever/Lisle
Polkinghorne > Raines

For consistency with our game plan and structure it would probably be beneficial to leave Cornelius in but he's had two unimpressive games and I feel like he might get the chop. Almost everyone was poor though so that might fall in his favor. Additionally, I hope Beams gets a full game.

Longer > Leuenberger
Maguire > McKeever/Lisle
Polkinghorne > Raines
.
Not sure we want to replace a good backman with either of the 2 you've named who are both training/playing as forwards.
I would think Lester will come in to play down back, if not Clarke.
Clarke is physically light but wouldn't have been elevated if there weren't plans to give him games (even if only as an emergency).

Maguire out is under the assumption that he won't be fit. If he is, he stays but I'm sure we'll be wary after last year.

IIRC, wasn't one of Martin's supposed upsides was that he has was flexible enough to also play a key defensive position?

If Maguire does not come up for the game, is there any chance Martin could go to Jenkins in order to free up Patfull?

Yeah, I agreed with Maguire out (assumed you had him as out if injured) but didn't agree with your ins if that transpires. Regardless of why he is out, his replacement must be suitable.:thumbsu:

And everyone is assuming Joel won't do the job again on Tex. Do we or do we not remember what he did to Tex last time?

(Hint: Tex wasn't happy)

Of course Tippett isn't playing again this time either...and we all remember what Sauce did to him.

(Hint: He wasn't happy either)

Fair enough.

What a great night it was too, after the first quarter anyway.

Raines must definitely play on Dangerfield and replace Polkinghorne in the side. Please no repeat of the Patful midfield experiment from last year when Dangerfield made him look out of his depth.. I was amazed Polkinghorne got a run in the first game and his disgraceful effort last week vindicates that thought. McKeever or Clarke to replace Maguire. I am happy to persist with Martin and have him just follow Jenkins around all day when he is in the Ruck. One of the other two can take him when he is down back.

Any more than two changes (apart from injury) would send an indifferent message to both our team and the footy public; we got smashed first up, but we had a really good pre-season and looked on the improve in the NAB Cup with our playing style. Massive clash this week vs Adelaide :footy:
