Venables may not have racked up the touches but he was always around the contest imposing himself. Will only get better.
I was surprised at the stats as watching the game felt that Venables was often involved in the contest and at the bottom of packs. Very good signs from him I thought.

I'm no great fan of Masten but his kicking was quite tidy last night and his pass to NN was one of the best kicks executed for us during the game. In an ideal setup he wouldn't be playing and I'm sure it's only a matter of time till someone else gets a crack but it's not as though he's keeping some jet out of the game.

What does he offer over hutchings/Partington?

One good kick in 90minutes of footy doesn't excuse 0 tackles and numerous turnovers.

Not sure Masten was as bad as people are making out - or maybe I just missed it on the TV. I thought he just got a pass mark on performance but for a senior player that isn't good enough. That said, there were worse out there. Duggan (who I have a lot of time for) had a very average game. Redden had a very ordinary first half. Gaff was ok but really not a whole heap better than Masten (there were some good and bad with both - or maybe just the waltzing through Gaff's "tackles" clouded my judgment). Venables had a very quiet game (but has some quality about him and we need to pump games into him).

Regardless of performance, from a team balance perspective, I don't think we should be fielding a team with Gaff, Jetta and Masten in it too often and the first two offer much more in other areas. So Masten out for Hutch and Cole in for Nelson if Cole is ready. But neither change is likely to make our team significantly better. Wouldn't mind seeing Ainsworth given a crack sooner rather than later if he can put a block of games together but he is unlikely to impact much and we can't have too many players in the single digits.

He wasn't the worst but as you said for a senior player not good enough. He doesn't seem to have any outstanding features anymore either. At least back in the day you could say his ground coverage and disposal into the 50 was good. Now he just seems to be filling a spot on the ground until someone else comes along. Similar to Wellingham last year.

People thinking Masten was ok, were you watching the same game?

Kicked one arsey goal, spoiled at least 3 others and generally ineffective around the ground. He can't tackle. nor break a tackle to save his life and doesn't hurt with possession.

Get in a youngster, or Hutchings who at least offers a physical presence and is a bigger threat around goals.
So much this

Yesterday we had:
  • 6 defenders: Hurn, Barrass, Gov, Shep, Nelson, Schofield
  • 2 def-mids: Jetta, Duggan
  • 2 outside mids: Masten, Gaff
  • 3 inside mids: Shuey, Sheed, Redden
  • 2 rucks: Lycett, Naitanui
  • 1 utility: Yeo
  • 1 forward-mid: Venables
  • 5 forwards: LeCras, Ryan, Cripps, Darling, Waterman
I feel like we don't have enough genuine on-ballers. Think that bringing in Hutch (or Ainsworth) for Nelson would help to balance it up. Could then put Jetta and Duggan back, where I think they will play their best footy this year. I agree with everyone that Masten also needs to go. I know he gives outside run and some good disposal, but he just doesn't do enough defensively or in the contest. I would prefer us to be slightly slower in the midfield but a bit more contested. Would give us:
  • 7 defenders: Hurn, Barrass, Gov, Shep, Schofield, Jetta, Duggan
  • 2 outside mids: Ainsworth, Gaff
  • 4 inside mids: Shuey, Sheed, Redden, Hutchings
  • 2 rucks: Lycett, Naitanui
  • 1 utility: Yeo
  • 1 forward-mid: Venables
  • 5 forwards: LeCras, Ryan, Cripps, Darling, Waterman

Contract extension was on the eve of the 2016 season, on the back of three top-10 B&F years between 2012-2014 and a pretty good 2015 up until he copped a dose of potato rot from Nic Suban sticking his arm in his mouth.

His form has dropped off a cliff since then but he's contracted until the end of next year. He actually wasn't too bad last night playing solely as a half-forward.
Poor english on my part; what I meant to say is he did not deserve a further 3 years and should have been delisted at the end of 2016. I cannot see a case to keep him in the side. He has reached his ceiling and even he bumps his head on it. Time to give someone else a chance to develop.

Brander at CHF would straighten us up immediately.

We lacked structure without a genuine tall forward.

Waterman showed his class with that goal under the pressure on a tough angle.

Careful, you’ll get the “inside mids don’t exist” argument

I think it was the second quarter when the ball came to him (Masten) on the back end of the centre square; he looked up and saw two Sydney players running towards him, hesitated, sh@t his pants, fell on the ball and was then pinged for HTB. Give the man another week :drunk:

What i hope
Outs: Masten(he is done, should pack his bag immediately and go win the sandover for east perth) , Nelson
Ins: Cole, Watson

Dogs went tall last week and were embarrassed, will we need three tall backs this week?

Who pulled up sore?

Brains and Rotham played ok in a WAFL flogging, Rioli is not fit enough yet so lets not even list him as available.

Sounds like Nelson did a lock down job on Papley, which is fine but he didn't provide much the other way. If you are going to make a career in locking down an opposition player you need to be doing that against gun mids, not above average forward pockets. I keep saying it put Nelson on the oppositions best / 2nd best mid, he has the tools and just needs to find a way to provide some counter attack / snatch a goal or two aka Ling ex Geelong. Put him on Macrae or Bontempelli, and please don't let him near Dahlhaus deep in defense.

Don't be surprised with no change.

Masten out for Cole or Hutchings would be my bet.

The thing that infuriated me about that play is that he stood stationary waiting for the ball to come to him, took possession then tried to break the oncoming tacklers flat footed. If he'd attacked the ball and met the tackler with momentum even a smaller guy like Masten can either break the tackle or at least disrupt it enough to get off an effective disposal.

I guess it means his always there abouts, just needs to attack it more but it'll come in time

My point was that at the start of 2016 he did deserve the extension (though maybe two years instead of three), his form to that point had been good. It dropped off basically straight after he signed the deal. (That may not be a coincidence).

The player who I'd most like to see in that half-forward role that Masten played last night is Karpany. He was barely sighted in the pre-season, he didn't play the first two practice matches for East Perth, I've got no idea how he went against Peel or if he even played that game. If he has a decent game on Good Friday then hopefully he'd be considered for Round 3.

Otherwise I don't think there's anyone who'd add any more in the role, at least until Rioli's fit. Throwing someone like Ainsworth into the forward line to play an unfamiliar position probably isn't the best idea when our forward line is struggling for cohesion as it is.

Hutchings would not be playing the same role.

He offers the ability to run out a game, to cover defensively (territory) and deliver inside 50 better than Hutchings or Partington.

If the role was an inside mid I'd take Hutchings every single time, but it wasn't.

You've basically just described a runner who's allowed one inside 50 entry a game.
