In the forward line? To me it looked like Hipwood and McStay were the only tall forwards. McCarthy, Cameron and resting/rotating mids schooled West Coast's defence while Allen, Darling, Brander, Waterman Hickey/Vardy didn't look agile enough.

Darling is class, Allen is being mooted as a tall mid and he and Brander are kids , Hickey is a second class ruck and Waterman is a tall mids size. Not surprising they under performed. Their mids were also smashed which didn't help.

So Brisbane and W C were equal 5th in height last week. Even with Hogan in both Brissie and WC were still taller

I should've been clearer but I meant forward line. I will say that all of Hogan, Lobb, McCarthy and Tabs do seem a bit more agile than West Coast's.

Seriously, you could replace Ballas with an inanimate object and probably get more tackles, forward 50 tackles AND pressure acts. Remember, he only came off late in the game.

Cam was excellent, Lobb is great for a BIG big man, and even Tabs is improving. Hogan in will add more forward pressure than having Ballas our there.

Cam and Lobb right up there for pressure acts (plus a few tackles and GOALS)

Ballas with the lowest pressure acts for the team. 3! Like really WTAF??? And zero tackles. Would like to think he would have been dropped anyway... but Ross of old wouldn’t have... but new Ross says he’s too loyal sometimes so who knows?

Been saying this for a while.
Ballas’ role as that negating small forward is old, ancient. Has no role in today’s game. Have to be good both ways. Have to impact the scoreboard and produce more then what Ballas has over the years. 6 disposals. Isn’t going to cut it. Look at Elliott dare I say Ryan, Rioli from West Coast. Betts from Adelaide.
I’m happy with hogan coming in. You know he’s going to damage both ways, get marks and create more then Ballas. Simple

Oscar Allen is only 192cm. But he plays more as a forward. Good hands.
Hickey is a horrible pick up. He’s slow and immobile. Not sure why he was picked up. Jones, at least for us, is a smart footballer. Hickey is not.

Yep ,forward or back as I said at the time. Still cry over not taking him.
He can certainly play. Like a faster, left footed version of Cox.
BOM says Saturday 90% chance of rain, Sunday is cloudy but clear in the afternoon with max 27. Should be fine I reckon
I don't trust the weather man. That dude don't know ****.

When does Liam Ryan ever work both ways

With Sandi pretty much down and out, I'd love to know what it would take to get English back home. What a combination him and Darcy would be.
We should have drafted him in the first place and Naughton as well . The List Manager must have smelt the fumes from your paint can for too long and it affected his thinking on draft day and didn't select Tim English. He did the same when he didn't take Naughton

Steady on. Logue was a bold pick for pick 8.Hopefully will get his body right. English is still very raw talent. Lots of muscle to put on. But we did get Darcy pick 38. Stoked with that, plus Brennan Cox not long after.
Cerra and Brayshaw were a must, Naughton was not in our needs at that point. Still we did well on our behalf. Can’t have them all.

Ill bet you anything he was open in the first quarter in goal kicking positions at least three times. Watched the game again and was way more involved that his stats say.Was open more than a few times later on in the game as well. Could have very easily kicked four without players up the filed having small fumbles or miss kicks. Pressure stats mean nothing when the role of the player is to lead up the ground to create space for others.

Well then surely Hogan in for Ballas is a plus! Hogan should play the lead up role 1,000 times better.

People were concerned about going too tall and not having enough smalls to put on the pressure. Either way, i think it’s a win at the selection table.

Agreed. Love Shultz staying in the team too. Just saying Ballaz was a bit unlucky last week.

absolute garbage. Ballantyne has speed and creates pressure even now so much more than Schultz who looks slow on first impression. Hope Schultz can make up that with some game smarts but to have a cheapshot at Ballantyne who is maybe in his last year, after a fine career with an injury says alot about you

Let me know when champion data start recording “implied pressure” and use that as opposed to you know, actual stats like “pressure acts”. He’s been a great player, one of my favourites, but the game has definitely gone past him.

To be fair, pressure acts isn’t a perfect measure. Players who play within congestion can rack up pressure acts, when the reality is, it’s easier to apply pressure if there’s 5 blokes within arms reach.

We were the 11th tallest team in round 1 (by average height).

1: GWS 189.5cms
2: Collingwood 189.2
3: Port 189.0
4: North 188.6
=5: Brisbane 188.5
=5: Geelong 188.5
=5: West Coast 188.5
8: Sydney 188.3
=9: Gold Coast 187.6
=9: Hawthorn 187.6
11: Fremantle 187.3
=12: Carlton 186.9
=12: Western B's 186.9
14: Melbourne 186.7
15: Adelaide 186.6
16: Richmond 186.5
=17: Essendon 186.1
=17: St Kilda 186.1.

If Hogan replaces Ballas, our average height in round 2 will be 188.2cms.

So far there have been three games this season where one team's average height was 2+ cms greater than the other:
Port (189.0) d Melbourne (186.7) rd 1
GWS (189.5) d Essendon (186.1) rd 1
Collingwood (189.4) d Richmond (185.7) rd 2.
The only other game this round where this applies is Port (189.0) v Carlton (186.5).

Average height is probably a poor indicator for mobility and ground level effectiveness which is the concern of coaches. For example you could end up with a mid ranged number (but be very immobile at the top end) because either numbers of really smalls could balance out larger numbers of talls or you could have a larger number just your average mids are a lot taller (but still have that ground effectiveness). Perhaps a more effective indicator maybe to take the 70th percentile height? Or better still, just take the average number of effective tackles?

It’s a good point re implied pressure. Covering late ground to “shock” or rush the disposer is very important.
Whilst not being Balla quick, Hoges is still very mobile. We shouldn’t lose too much.

When I watched the replay I got pretty angry with Ballas at the start of the game - the reasons for him being 'open' often weren't good ones. Please go and watch the first 8 minutes and focus on his performance, especially the passage when Alex Pearce runs through the middle of the ground and kicks to him in space but he drops it. Watch what he does from then on up until Tabs earns a HtB. If you don't come away from it thinking Ballas probably would have been dropped regardless I'd be very surprised. Thank god Brayshaw came in to help McCarthy. Pretty sure he was on the bench getting a serve after that, and Ross' comments about being too loyal seem to align. Everyone has an expiry date, I think it's time to call time like Danyle did last season.
