Maybe Polo isn't skinny, but he certainly isn't as strong as a slowish midfielder should be. He is developed, but in that wirey, shane tuck sort of way. Do you really think he has 1/10th of the core strength of chapman, ablett, bartel, corey, s.johnson etc. These guys have incredible strength in the hips and can break, or at least get their hands free in, any tackle. Polo doesn't quite have that ability to shrug off opponents.

absolutely, take note next time he plays at the way he can stand up in tackles and still get arms free, deceptively strong and can quite easily hold his own at AFL level.

On another thing I really would like to see Jackson stand SteveJ. Jacko is not good enough as a midfielder, gets lost in traffic, he has the tools to play as a medium defender. Quick, very strong, long booming kick, agile, has discipline and most importantly plays like an angry ranga.

If this is how it turns out, Mackie will have a field day. I'd put a defensive tag on mackie (hislop/nahas are options)

I'd switch corey and ling. Ling to tag Lids.

Doesn't look at all promising for us, especially if Corey does lineup on Edwards.

Bowden needs to have a huge match down back IMO for us to be competitive. 25 disposals at 80% MINIMUM. Half back vs half forward is about the only place we are competitive with them.

I'm very worried about Polo being able to keep with Johnson but other than that fairly evenly matched.

The midfield is Geelong's biggest advantage. Pity we didn't have the 3 C's as you said. Cotch, Cogs and Cuz

Part of the reason I had Mackie line up on Brown is while Mackie will try and create it might actually free up Brown to do what he does best instead of having a close checking defender just sitting on him.

While most expect Ling to head to Lids I get the feeling he might end up going to Foley. I think Bomber might look at putting Corey head to head with Lids similar to how he had Corey run with Swan in the NAB GF.

I suppose we could go with Richo on Bartel on the wing, if that were to happen Bartel would end up getting 40 touches as Richo wouldn't go anywhere near him.

I think Polo could do very well on Johnson who isn't exactly a speedster. He will however take Polo to where the ball is and looking at Polo over the NAB games he seemed to be making the right decisions when he was getting the ball. Only other option I see is Rance and its a bit much to expect a first gamer to come in and stop Johnson, would be great if he could though.

The one thing that is looking good for us is the fact that it looks like being a miserable day down at Geelong tomorrow. Live about 1 hour up the road and it has been pissing down since lunch time.

Not sure about that claim regarding Deledio. Last year in round 18 he had 25 touches 10 marks and in round 8 he had 21 touches 6 marks 2 goals. To me it looks like he has worked out how to keep himself involved in games despite the attention of Ling. Will do so tomorrow after having a very quiet game last week and for the first time I can remember he had some of our fans wondering if he was good enough to impact games when things weren't going well or was just another downhill skier who picks up cheapies to make himself look better than he actually is.

I doubt Bartel will go to Richo. I reckon Mackie will probably get him and try to hurt us running off him ala Waite last week.

I like Polo on Stevie J. I have said all week he will be a good match-up for him. We don't really have any other options in regards to Stevie J.

McGuane to take Mooney, Moore to Champan and Rance to Hawkins. I know it was said in another thread Rance will get Champan but I think he will be to experienced for Rance.

Although in this weather I would not be surprised if Hawkins is a late ommission.

Mackie or Milburn who are at least 15 cm taller than King. It might be convenient if it falls to the ground a lot and he is played forward but didn't we just just bring another bloke in who is a forward specialist at crumbing and goaling?

Also, the moment we try to tag their backline instead of them tagging our forwardline is the time we go from trying to win the game, to trying to save the game and that's not what I want to see tomorrow.

Kelly might be an option but I'd rather go head to head with Kelly with a skillful player who can punish the cats offensively rather than a turnover king. It has to be Ablett and it has me worried because last time Gaz tore us apart when King was on him. Just have to hope it's slippery and windy slog because that will give King the best conditions.

Jake is a bulldog and he wouldn't be in if it wasn't for his ferociousness so I assume he will have a tag job to piss off as many cats as possible, but I just don't see it working for us unless we're trying to do a Freo job on Geelong and have decided pre-game, "if you can't beat 'em, kill 'em."

Tigers to play ugly against the Cats to avoid mauling.

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace has warned fans not to expect a pretty game against the Cats tomorrow at Skilled Stadium.
Richmond's pitiful first-up offering against Carlton leaves them needing to produce an epic turnaround to beat the Cats in Geelong, where the Tigers have won just once since 1990.

On the face of it, having his players match the likes of Cat stars Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartel and Paul Chapman in their attack on the ball and high possession rate would be a win of sorts for Richmond coach Terry Wallace given the first-round debacle.

"Probably the biggest thing for me is matching them in the competitive areas of the game, that's been the key note for them (the Cats) over a period of time," Wallace said on Friday.

"We were very, very good at that last year, not so good at it in round one, so that's probably our first starting point."

Forecast showers and wind should also play a part in making the game tight and scrappy, and the redevelopment work on one of the ground's stands is expected to make goal kicking difficult at one end.

Richmond's emphasis on winning the hard ball was underlined by their inclusions, as Jake King, former Bomber Tom Hislop and debutant Alex Rance were all included for their attack on the ball - something so badly lacking in the 83-point defeat to the Blues.

But the Tigers' injury woes continued this week, as former captain Kane Johnson has been put on the club's long-term injury list.

The midfielder injured a knee during the pre-season competition and is not expected to play for two months.

Ben Cousins is progressing well after his latest hamstring injury, but Andrew Raines (knee) is also at least a month away.

Richmond's nightmare start heaped the pressure on Wallace, who needs to guide his side to the finals to secure another contract.

But he said he had not had time to reflect on the speculation surrounding his position, or the Cats' recent domination of the Tigers.

Geelong boast an average winning margin of 80 points from their past four games against Richmond, and have won 18 games of 20 at home the past two years.

"That's out of our control, but what our supporters do expect is blokes to have a red hot dip and get out and represent the colours the way that should be," Wallace said.

nope, but it reads like it was somebody else from last week:

Richmond will probably end up with six changes to the side, with emergency Dean Polo likely to come in.

Two major areas where we were hammered against carlton were our kicking and our strength/tackling. I thought defensively and offensively we were alright, it was in the midfield and coming off half back where we butchered it. So, where do the changes sit with me?

Ins
Hislop: Adds extra hardness and tackling ability but has average skills (wont add or negate IMO). Goes missing.
King: Has heart, pace and hardness and average to good skills (don't believe the hype) but SHOCKING decision making and no aerial ability due to his height. If his head is screwed on properly, can be a key player for us, if not we can expect the likes of corey jones to kick 5 in a quarter against us.
Rance: Probably my favourite prospect for this year. Pace, strength, height, skills, leadership (look at the way he ordered around coburg's defence last year as an 18 year old!) and natural defensive instincts. Should add alot.
Graham: will get slaughtered against ottens but needs the experience. to be honest, I can't wait till patto is fit again
Nahas: Baptism of fire, if we were going to play him we should have played him against a team of skinny kids like melbourne or essendon...against geelong he will be completely out of place. If he gets a goal or two early, look for the geelong guys to really get stuck into/break him.

Polo addresses neither of our problems. He can find the ball and has a great tank, but hes not very quick (borderline slow), has barely above average skills and is still quite thin. Thats regardless of attitude!

Outs: Browne and McMahon were obvious from last weeks efforts. Thursfield VERY unlucky. I thought he was ok. Would have dropped edwards or jackson myself.
