Changes For Round 23

The obvious inclusion this week is Howe in for Oxley. The first week of finals I am hoping for Treloar in for Murphy. Madgen stays I reckon. He is pretty composed and always puts in even if he has some weaknesses. We've missed the opportunity to play McLarty this year and we need to stick with the defensive group that is gelling together. Outside of Howe and Treloar it doesn't seem there is much on offer because of injuries.

If Madgen doesn’t mark the ball, it falls in front of him 100% of the time, similar to Cox, so given that important trait, I definitely want him to stay in where if the ball goes to ground, our mobile units Crisp, Langdon and Phillips can pick up the crumbs and run the ball out of defensive 50. In fact, I think I prefer Madgen to Moore at this point.

What is everyone's preferred defence heading into finals look like?

Do we get Goldsack, Moore and Reid back?

IMHO Moore and Reid are both too risky to bring in for a final. Goldsack on the other hand if gets himself right, his experience could be invaluable.

Murray I like his speed and how much he takes the game on. I think that outweighs his bad kicking.

Maynard Madgen Langdon
Howe Goldsack Crisp

Int: Murray

Moore is a no brainer. Has to be risked. Goldsack can build in the VFL and be on call.

Reid is cooked for the year I think.

If one player should be rested, it’s Hoskin-Elliott. Man’s not been right since the Essendon game and we need his cutting edge back in finals.

He can rest with everybody else the week after. Theres nobody obvious to slot in and take his spot so he stays. Edit...forgot Fas.....maybe rest WHE if he is actually injured. Likely hes just down on touch. Its not an easy position to play and when you dont get a touch it looks obvious.

Out: DeGoey
In: Fasolo/Blair

Let Goo get his leg right. I want to know what Fasolo and Blair can produce if required. Shades of Fraser in Round 22, 2010
I seem to recall there was a bit of getting him to 200 games in Fraser’s selection?

I can't understand the positive comments on Oxley. If he plays in a finals game then... oh dear... we would be in trouble. Same as Murray.

In. McClarty (if he plays well today) and Howe

Out. Madgen and Oxley

100%. Two nice things a game isn’t good enough at this level.

Posters suggesting Sier or Langdon be dropped either for Freo or finals need a concussion test.

Taking the piss surely?

BTW watch the Langdon interview on the CFC site. Seems like a great bloke and very humble.

I’d keep Murphy in and drop Ox for Howe. People have short memories, sure it was good when Ox put his head over the ball in the last quarter but up to half time I reckon every single one of his kicks/handballs went directly to an opposition player in a dangerous position.

Thought Murphy looked great. Would definitely retain at least for Freo.
I couldn't have summed it up any better than this whole post if I tried.

Langdon has been sensational the last two months.
Makes one mistake yesterday and he gets grilled. What about him absolutely taking Grey to the cleaners? Nah. That's forgotten.

A bit more than a concussion test is required I reckon.

Condescension, you're so clever.

Nah that’s personality.

Out: JDG and Oxley
In: Howe and Fasolo/ Crocker

Oxley is “stiff” in the sense that he’s done little wrong and performed his role, but Madgen gives us more flexibility with Langdon and Howe, IMO.

As we stand I don’t think JDG will get up and whilst I want to see Fasolo get a farewell match (barring injuries) Crocker was the one they went with earlier this season and I don’t think enough has changed since then unless Fas has found a yard he never had...

Because it’s not what happened. He played his role no doubt, but that’s an OTT statement. Absolutely no chance he gets dropped and nor should he!

I worry about Madgen's hands below his knees. He's a bit fumbly, a bit of a two-grabber, and while it doesn't hurt us a great deal when we press and he's up on the wing, it was his fumble that led to McArtin's goal that won the game for the Swans.

I liked Oxley's game from the perspective that he broke the lines a few times. Begs the question - whose disposal is more reliable? His or Murray's? I think Oxley is more adept at one v one than Murray.

I'd like another look at Murphy too. I think we have a Langdon mkII here and that isn't a bad thing. It helps fill the void left by Scharenberg. If Murphy can play the third tall role, it allows Langdon and Howe to lock down. I'm okay with that. Hence for Fremantle, I'd like this back seven:

B: Maynard Langdon Crisp
HB: Murphy Howe Oxley
Bench: Greenwood/Aish

McLarty isnt coming in.

In Howe
Out Oxley although maybe madgen instead

Fasolo in if degoey needs an extra week to recover.

You could tell he was sore yesterday, he could chase or tackle.

McClarty won't play this season.

Murphy was great today. It'll be a tough call between him and Murray. I'd keep Murphy in because he was cleaner.
Problem with Murray is that it's not injury that kept him from playing but 'personal reasons'. We don't know those reasons nor whether they will prevent him playing further games.

True. I was assuming he'd be ready to resume. But you're right he may not be ready. In which case theres no decision to make.
