Changes For Round 23

We have to play our best side. The mical staff have been pretty strict about unfit players all year, so I don't see them sending anyone over who is not up for it. De Goey could do with a rest for his leg, but he has had a very discontinuous season, and I would be loathe to leave him out for another 2 week stretch if I didn't have to. Unlike so many on here, I don't see any problems with the fitness personnel, and have no trouble trusting their collective judgement. If Howe is fit, he has to play. Appleby is not the kind of backman we are short of, so he is not a likely in. Moore may be close (despite the numbers in the injury report), and would be worth a go if he is fit. Oxley would probably miss out, only because Howe is a much better player, and Madgen if Moore got up for the same reason. Nobody needs to go out on form.

I think it is too late to rest players now, anyone who gets rested now would be without football for nearly 3 weeks not what you want at this time of the season. They have done a fantastic job this season to get where we are and really I would have been ecstatic just playing finals but now we are here we must go as hard as we can.

It is not a given we make next finals next season or following seasons although with the players we have on the list we probably will but you have to take all your chances.

You don't want to muck with momentum, and we still have a top 4 spot to claim. So I wouldn't be doing anything too drastic.

However, WHE has been down on form ever since he hurt his knee earlier in the year. At one stage, it looked as if he would kick 50 goals, but has slowed to a halt over recent weeks.

Therefore, I think it would be a good idea to give him a rest and give Fasolo a crack at it.

Yes, if WHE is carrying something & playing sore, then an extra week (total 2 weeks) may help.
But if WHE is fine...then he plays.
If Howe in good to go, he replaces Oxley.
Then there is the Murray v Murphy question (tough decision).
Absolutely NO resting of players.
We need to go to Perth at full strength & have a big win.
Can always manage guys in the last quarter (JDG) if possible.
We have an outside chance of grabbing 2nd with home final.

Plus another on the idea of resting WHE for Fas.

whist WHE is not in ripping form or hitting the scoreboard he stays in the side, we have a forward mix that is working and playing unselfish football. sometimes it not about kicks and handballs but about when and where to lead and opening up space for your teammates behind you etc. and that only comes from continuity.

Rest someone for fas. Get an AFL game into him at least before finals. Maybe degoey?

Once again looking at the selection pattern this season would be best indication.

Overall themes:

  • Like for like
  • New players get more than one game as an unofficial rule
  • Possession of positions is beneficial
  • The best players do come back in
On this basis I'd suggest:

Howe is certain to return assuming he's uncorked.
Means a like for like type makes way.
That seems simple enough being Oxley.

We also know Murray to be likely available but is he a certain inclusion; suggest he's not that, yet.

So really it's a judgment call on Murphy and how he'd go two games in a row.
Have a feeling he remains.

One change hence:

In: Howe
Out: Oxley

Emergencies to be taken to Fremantle:

McLarty, Murray, Oxley, Daicos

As an aside, have a feeling Callum has been earmarked as having done what's required but that's it unless it's a last minute call up. Another pre season will be highly beneficial.

Given the importance of the Pies v Sandi Saturday in terms of setting us up for finals, I doubt we'll take more than 1 emergency to Perth. No players get on the plane that aren't assessed as 100% right to play.

In: Howe, Murray
Out: Oxley, Murphy

If JDG needs a reset before finals and to ensure his legs are fine, then bring in Fasolo for a game. He'll thrive on a game in Perth.

Could be an audition for him in front of Ross...
OUT: Ballantyne
IN: Fasolo

He can rest with everybody else the week after. Theres nobody obvious to slot in and take his spot so he stays. Edit...forgot Fas.....maybe rest WHE if he is actually injured. Likely hes just down on touch. Its not an easy position to play and when you dont get a touch it looks obvious.

So hypothetical. You rest WHE and give Faz a run, he kicks 5 and has a great game. What do you do week 1 of finals in terms of selection?

Allow our Coach & selection committee earn their $$ with the best decision.
Good problem to have.

Doubt there'll be too many changes this week. Howe a likely in, Oxley or Madgen likely to make way.

Surely they don't bring him back for one game. Please Ross.

Might see both Sandi and Danyle Pearce playing on Saturday. Given the flogging they got I think there'll be a few changes. Time will tell.

To answer your question you'll need to give me a player review from next weeks game on the other 21 players in the 22. But WHE would come back.

Fas kicking 5 against Frankston (who kicked one goal) and backing up with 5 against Fremantle ( who allowed Geelong to kick 23 consecutive goals) wouldnt sway me too much.

You shouldnt NOT pick Fasolo because he might play well. That would be madness. I wouldnt pick him just because we shouldnt rest anybody unless they are actually injured.

Completely agree, WHE benefits the team structurally without having to hit the score board. At last weeks game against port, he was involved in 5-6 scoring chains due to his running ability to press up onto the wings / high half foraward which allows for our fast transition to occur with boys like stepho and JT to flow through.

He is an intergral part to our team, but i do think he is sore. i would rest either him or JDG, i'm not sure about both. We need a convincing win here to prepare outselves for the finals, there is no point for the boys to have to fight for the win or be sore afterwards.

Seeing this, id play howe, drop JDG and play faz as a farewell game (i doubt he is staying) and drop WHE.

Where have I suggested that? I merely asked what you'd do if we did pick him and he did play well. You know, as a discussion, but thanks for the lecture, very informative.

What happened to the rebuild?

We've all seen what happens if you strip too much experience away too soon. Be handy depth and relatively cheap if nothing else.
