The point is that any way you slice it, to include Faulkner in the team means you need to drop a top 6 batsman.

That is a terrible idea since the fragility of our batting is pretty much the only reason we lose matches these days. Weakening it makes no sense.

doesn't matter now since the game is on and faulkner is injured, but given what bailey and watson have provided so far, we're not losing much in terms of batting by not selecting one of them in place of a faulkner type. an ian chappell 'attacking selection', you pick an extra bowler, back your keeper batsman and current number 8 bowling allrounder. this on top of the back to back tests, perth weather, and playing a recently-sore harris.
anyway agree to disagree, etc etc. that pair might come good second innings.

Crazy concept but if a batsmen is struggling replace them with a batsmen who might not struggle.

The concept of playing 6 frontline bats doesn't suddenly become flawed if one particular batsman is struggling for form.

no, 6 front line bats isn't a flawed concept at all. we run with it most of the time and seem to do ok with it.
for perth, i figure we might gain more than we lose if bailey or watson were replaced with a bowling all-rounder. it's not about doing away with the concept of 6 frontline bats for all time, just for perth. either way, bailey or watson could be replaced by someone who will at least add something to the team. my personal preference would be a bowling all-rounder, who i'm sure had a good chance of making an enterprising 7 before holing out in the deep.
