Performances in this week ends shield games will perhaps decide the make up of the 3rd test team.Good to see the the Victorians who always have a full strength shield team because the Australian selectors strangely do not rate their players playing against a NSW team with Smith,Warner,Neville and Lyon in the side.
I don't get this? Who doesn't rate the Victorian side? The selectors or Victorians?

I for one am looking forward to this Shield game, think it will be an absolute cracker!

Bullshit. Top wicket taker last season.
Deserved his chance.

Key word there 'last season'. Sayers is in better form now.

Selectors wonder why this side is a pile of you know what, there is the answer. Stop picking blokes off form 6-7 months ago.

Bit hard when they don't play over winter.
On that logic Ferguson shouldn't have got a game because his previous 2-3 years have been good and we should have debuted Lehmann instead because he's in form RIGHT NOW!!!!!

Getting lapped by a SA team without their 2 best players, something stinks in the Aussie side and the buck stops with the skipper I'm afraid.
Yeah it's completely his fault that all the other batsmen play like crap.

Sutherland said big changes. So whatever that means I don't know

My team for the 3rd test will be the same except maybe Marsh at 7 replacing Ferguson. I'll give Burns, Voges and Mennie one last chance to showcase their stuff. I would like for Ferguson to get a chance but Marsh on a greenish deck might be useful.

Pakistani series is where I make big changes. New series to try something and work for the futuer.

There is the point, they should be playing over winter- County cricket is available. Ferguson wouldn't have been in my side anyway, would have picked Handscomb. Ferguson at least has made runs this season for SA though. Minnie is a gloried pie thrower who was smashed in the ODI series, then came back and Sayers out performed him in the Shield game.

There it is. You think he's a pie chucker.
Clearly objectivity is a lost cause here.

ODI series. Who gives a ****. That's irrelevant to test selection.

As for County cricket, for some players there would be Visa complications. Not as easy to get in as it used to be.

Why do people think County Cricket is as accessible as it was back pre-2010? It is not.

The impact of new regulations has made it far more difficult for foreign players to appear in county cricket. At a time when the rest of the world is attempting to attract more international cricketers to their domestic competitions, England are going the other way.

Why? Well, there was a concern that too many cricketers who did not qualify for England were filling spaces in county teams and thereby impeding the progress of young Englishmen. There may have been an element of legitimacy about such concerns, too.

He does nothing with the ball, isn't overly quick and barely moves the thing. In essence he's a terrible option. Sayers at least swings the ball, Bird at least seams it. I struggle to see how these two were not ahead of a bloke that shows very little traits to be a test bowler. I'd even rather play Boland...and that says a lot!

ODI is pretty irrelevant I agree, but you do get to see whether a bowler has International quality traits. Mennie showed very little and it is little wonder in test cricket he showed even less.

Regardless of visa complications, when there is a way there usually is. Doesn't have to be England, could be anywhere. They shouldn't be playing for 4 months and then resting for 8.

Except he does seam the ball. He's not going to lead the wickets last season bowling straight deliveries. Your obsession with lack of pace again baffles.

Where else can they play in the Winter? Ranji trophy on the flattest decks known to man? In Pakistan? In a bad West Indies comp? It's not as easy as you make it seem. There aren't options when there are restrictions in England except for the IPL.

The Australian selectors,a full strength Victorian shield team has been playing other shield teams most times with out their better players who are on Australian duties.Surely if Handscomb,Maxwell,Wade etc perform in this game they must be considered seriously for the 3rd test team.Similar with Neville and Lyon, agree should be a great game.

How? I want Sayers in the side and he's slower. Have you seen our batsmen? They miss straight balls all the time..want to dig up Mitch Marsh's test dismissals, he's the master of missing gun barrel straight deliveries.

Those options are fine, it at least keeps them in form and playing cricket. The point is you are picking players off what they have done 8 -12 months ago, that is way too long. They need CURRENT form. Half the problem is these soft blokes want to just play for 4 months and do nothing the rest of the year, nothing annoys me more than players needing 'rests' in the team...from what exactly? You need to be playing cricket and lots of it, it is the way your body gets used to it.

But here's the thing with rest. The English do it too and they seem fine. The problem is that it is a lack of match awareness and just not good enough. Remember Australia did have rest and rotation policies for a long time. I remember in the VB or C&U tri series that so many players were out for rotation purposes. So let's not pretend that rest is just a new thing.

Also don't think BCCI will want Aussie players to take over spots for their young players. Don't think Australian Government will want Australians to play in Pakistan. It works both ways. Just because there is an interest from our end doesn't mean there is from their end.

Joe Mennie is like Ryan Murphy - chopped up at WAFL level but it's pretty clear he doesn't have the weapons to be a passable Test bowler.

He was a poor selection and performed accordingly.

??? This series is dead - so what is the point in waiting for the Pakistan series where we would go in on an even footing again.

Mennie deserves another gig. He wasnt that bad. I'd only accept bird playing ahead of him. Siddle is finished.

Warner
Bancroft
Usman
Smith
Ferguson
Handscomb
Nevill
Mennie / Bird
Starc
Lyon
Hazelwood

That's for the most part beside the point. We can't pick and choose when to pick players in form. He'd performed and deserved a crack.

Don't think we'll see too many changes for this test. Expecting a few more for the changes for the Pakistan series.

Team:
Warner - obviously
Burns - SMarsh comes straight back in when fit so no use trying someone new yet. Not sure Burns has the technique to open at test level right now, think his future is at 5 or 6
Khawaja - the bloke is too talented to be failing as often as he has been. Obviously not close to being dropped but he is one who needs to be more consistent
Smith - obviously
Handscomb - best performed state level batsman of the past few years. In the right age bracket, time for him to get his opportunity
Ferguson - would be too harsh to drop him after one game. Wasn't too hot on his initial selection but now he's in he deserves at least a few more games to see if he has what it takes. I really hope he takes his chance. Should have played a lot more international cricket, particularly in ODIs, over the past few years
Nevill - probably should get dropped. Probably should've been dropped a while ago tbh. Gets one more chance but I think Wade will be keeper against Pakistan
Siddle/Mennie - think Bird is the best option we've got until Cummins and Pattinson can get on the park but I don't see him getting a game in Adelaide. Thought Mennie was okay with the ball, but not convinced he is good enough at this level. Sidds is probably a good chance to come straight back in if he's fit. He's not the answer but there is a real lack of options.
Starc - obviously
Hazlewood - obviously
Lyon - boy is he out of form. Those behind him (O'Keefe, Holland and Agar) have all looked very pedestrian at test level but are all in good form at state level. Needs to sharpen up and fast. Can see Swepson being a surprise selection for him later in the summer if he doesn't find something fast.

Of the others:

Voges - would be surprised if he plays another test
Bailey/Klinger/White - not the time for stopgap selections
Bancroft/Patterson/Head/Lehmann - wouldn't be displeased if one of these guys got an opportunity. All behind Handscomb though. Not sure if they're ready yet. It would be nice if they got a taste of it could spur them on to go to the next level
Maxwell - would be happy to take the risk on him and see what happens. Could be a handy counter attacker at number 6 (De Kock style). Probably only gets a chance if Ferguson and/or Burns don't take their opportunities
Wade - has his keeping improved enough to be selected? I'm not sure. As a batsman he is so far ahead of Nevill. I'm sure he wonders why he wasn't afforded the same latitude as Nevill has so far.
MMarsh - only comes back when he dominates shield cricket
Henriques/Stoinis - not sure an AR is required at this stage, both would need to be dominating the Shield to get a look in
Behrendorrf/Sayers - both do their best work with the new ball but with Starc and Hazlewood they'd be forced to bowl first change. I'd have them behind Bird at this stage, can see Sayers debuting before the end of the summer. Feel like he should have got an opportunity first over Mennie
I pretty much agree with this. SMarsh back in if fit but if not with Bancroft in crap form Burns will get another chance.

Voges out and I agree that Handscomb should probably get the next chance.

Ferguson, Neville and Lyon get another chance but are on very thin ice.

I would have gone Bird or Sayers over Mennie. I dont think he looked that great but it would be harsh to drop him after one test
