We really need 2 of these threads.

One for the even remotely plausible and realistic changes.
And another for the ridiculous Big Footy fantasies where half the team gets changed with about 4 blokes debuting.
Alright well they sure showed me..

Has to be one of Phillips/Rixon/Zoehrer surely.

Phillips kept for the first 2 Tests of the 1984/85 home series against the Windies and Rixon did the last three, but I think Phillips broke has hand. By the next series in England, Phillips was back. Zoehrer took over from Phillips at the start of the 1985/86 away series against NZ and held his spot until the 2nd Ashes Test in 1986/87. Greg Dyer took over for the next match but Zoehrer return for the rest of the series - which suggests Zoehrer was injured for that 3rd Test. By the start of the next series - at home the next year against NZ - Dyer was back and Zoehrer was gone. Dyer held his spot that Summer but for the next tour Healy was in.

"However, selector Mark Waugh said last week the panel would be making some calls on “instinct” and the left-handed Maddinson has extraordinary potential on his day."

you cant make this shit up

Come back Bacchus, I think we've found the weak link.

Name a Shield batstman who has extraordinary potential on his day. That covers most of them doesn't it?

**** me sideways.

Can anyone else remember six changes to a Test team?
Was 1978 last time, so I don't really have recollection.

Needed a shakeup & only 1 questionable selection imo.

Patterson scored 737 runs at 52 last year. Maddinson scored 438 at 30.

And Patterson hung around for twice as many balls as Maddinson.

What a ridiculously strange decision.

They honestly should have stuck with Mitch Marsh if they're going to pick a bloke averaging 30 in Shield....

Am I the only one surprised we dropped Burns for an unproven 20 year old even though Burns was in horrible form and needed to be immediately dropped?

Our past selectors would definitely have persisted with Burns despite all indications saying he should be replaced with Renshaw

Couldn't agree more with that. Not sure whether Patterson bowls at all but Maddinson does throw down some left arm pies so maybe his batting & bowling won the selectors over :drunk:

“Nic is an exciting and talented young player and we feel now is the ideal time for him to be involved with the Australian team. He has the ability to break the game open and we think he will flourish in this environment.”

real ability v's "potential on his day"
and Mark Waughs instinct told him to choose the second option.

bugger me

So what is the side now?
In all honesty I think we've got two options:

Option 1: 7 batsmen (incl. wicketkeeper) and 4 bowlers.
Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith (c)
Handscomb
Maddinson
Wade (wk)
Starc
Hazelwood
Bird (or Sayers)
Lyon

Option 2: 6 batsmen (incl. wicketkeeper) and 5 bowlers.
Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith (c)
Handscomb
Wade (wk)
Starc
Hazelwood
Bird
Sayers
Lyon

The first one is probably more likely but I there is a chance we may want the extra bowling option. Lyon is very lucky the guys that would've pushed him out are both injured, and Patterson is extremely stiff to miss.

It's a good nod to the future of the Australian cricket. Like you I think think Burns was gonesky, was surprised to see him get the nod for the Hobart test to begin with (Marcus Harris was my bolter) and Burns's efforts in this round of the shield were poor to say the least.
