Maddinsons scored 393 runs in 15 innings last year. 112 in one innings. Superstud. Mark Waugh Strikes Back.
he said he has potential on his day...he didnt mention how often those days might come around

He's also shown to be below average with the gloves, this is the equivalent of picking Mennie instead of Bird because he bats better.

A keepers first job is with the gloves and Wade has shown he's not Test quality with them.
As I said, the selectors have prioritised batting above keeping, which is 100% understandable at the moment.

All of the changes apart from one are positive, there should be more excitement than angst.

Um why is Wade back in the team? Nevill has at least shown grit with the bat and is the far superior gloveman.
Generally in the 2nd innings when the game is already over

**** me we're in some trouble with the players we've got to choose from. How would you be debuting as a 20 year old in a day night test as an opener.
If you're an opener there's a 50/50 chance that your first test innings will be during the early arvo when conditions are good so it could be worse. The lower order batsmen have a far greater chance of walking out to bat under lights...

It's not understandable at all, getting the best guy behind the stumps with the gloves is just as important as picking the best batsmen in the top order and they haven't done that.

Wade isn't that much better than Nevill with the bat to justify this.

Couple of good changes but a couple of questionable/flat out ridiculous (Maddinson for Ferguson) ones too. We're no where near it and not going to be for a while but stupid selection won't help. As usual an ordinary NSW player is involved.

Wade has made 2 Test hundreds.

Apart from one or two innings Nevill has looked a walking wicket.

Key words.
And? Let's go with the fact that he's had one Sheffield shield season where he has averaged more than 36. Or he has scored 155 runs this summer in 4 innings, 116 of them in one. He's a standard "hope he's good, we put a lot of effort into him" pick. Hasn't done anything to deserve it, other than have CA spend money on him through the Academy and U19 process.

IF Callum Ferguson isn't recalled back into the team at any stage he'd be the 22nd Australian batsman (didn't bowl or keep wickets) to start and finish his Test career in the same match. The most recent before Ferguson was Victorian opener Wayne Phillips in Perth against India in 1991/92. Stuart Law bowled 3 overs in his only match in 1995/96. Only Rowley Pope (3 runs in 1884/85) and Ken Meuleman (0 runs in 1945/46) scored less runs than Ferguson. However, unlike Pope and Ferguson, Meuleman only batted once, took a catch and was in the winning team. Jeff Moss made the most runs of Australia's 1-Test wonders in 1978/79 (38 & 22*) whilst Law made the highest score (54* & DNB).

Maddinsoon as a batsmen is the complete opposite to what the team needs. He's the guy that will give his wicket away easily instead of knuckling down.

In barely half the tests Nevill played, Wade passed 50 twice more and converted 2 of them into centuries. He's shit loads better.
If his keeping was slightly better I'd have picked him over Haddin as well, who generally saved all his runs for the times his team least needed them.

My XI

Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith (c)
Handscomb
Maddinson
Wade (wk)
Starc
Hazelwood
Bird/ Sayers
Lyon

Still trying to get my head around the thought of Nic Maddinson in a baggy green and Matthew Wade back in the test side, don't know if my head is big enough to get over the complexity of it however.

As for Handscomb i definitely agree with that as a replacement for Voges and think its a great opportunity for Renshaw. Can't say I've seen a lot of him bat but just hope he has a bit of staying power in him like Rogers and won't go gung ho early chasing wide balls.

If they wanted a 6th bat (Maddison) I'd much rather have given Callum Ferguson another chance in front of a home crowd. Got the jitters early in the first innings at Hobart and picked out the wrong fielder to run a second on, second innings he failed like many others and pays a heavy price like Burns. Granted Ferguson's scores of 4 and 4 against the Bulls doesn't help him at all but considering how many chances other batsman have been given in the past he'd have to be feeling pretty filthy and like a scape goat after waiting a long time for a baggy green and putting runs on the board for years.

Mennie was a bad call to begin with. Doesn't bowl with great pace (Mitch Marsh like pace), doesn't swing it and maybe got the edge over Bird at Hobart because he can handle the bat a bit better.

Nevill was stiff in my opinion, nothing wrong with his keeping. Think there was a stumping he missed in Hobart but is generally a safe keeper just needs to work on his batting average. In saying that if they've bought Wade in purely because he is in better batting form than thats ridiculous. in 5 innings this summer he has made a 78 and 26 against Tasmania in game 1, 3 against Queensland in a innings win when the 3 bowlers Tremain, Boland and Holland all scored more than a 6 and DNB against NSW. Was involved in 2 dismissals out of 20 against the Blues, not sure how many batsman nicked out but that's a percentage of 10% in the overall dismissals. Had a total of 7 dismissals (6 & 1) against QLD, and 3 for the match against Tasmania.

Lyon is bloody fortunate that O'Keefe went down and Sayers extremely unlucky but should have played in Hobart ahead of Mennie to begin with.

Mark Waugh said something about the "vibe" of the bloke being special....that's all you need these days apparently.

"In summing up, it’s the constitution, it’s Mabo, it’s justice, it’s law, it’s the vibe, and…no that’s it…it’s the vibe. I rest my case."

I could actually see Mark Waugh saying that.

He had a bad series just before he was dropped, no doubt about that. We shall see how much he has improved since then.

If they were going to take out Ferg, Maddinson is the last guy I would have replaced him with.
Me reading the squad:

Renshaw: Rewarding a youngster in decent form. A true bolter.

200.gif

Handscomb: Has the runs and consistency for selection. Put his hand up this week when no one else did.

200.gif

Sayers: Consistently performed well. good with the pink ball.

Nevill, Voges and Burns axed: All deserved it.

Maddinson in the squad over Patterson (or Ferguson)

Wade averages a whopping 12 more runs an innings than Nevill, he's not a far superior batsman to justify the gap in glove work between the two.

Wait are we on the same team here? I don't want Maddinson, I want Patterson.

Nevill has only played 5 more Tests than Wade.

Don't know if Wade has the temperament to knuckle down and bat with the lower order but. Just as likely to nick out or try and slog Duminy/ Maharaj out of the stadium.
