All this talk about a left handed number 6 bat like Maddinson. Think we're forgetting a former left hander that could do the job while literally snaffling Lyon's pies at first slip #bringbackcozzy

The selectors are between a rock and a hard place with the keeping role; if Nevill was retained for another Australian loss and failed with the bat again then people would be up in arms that he's been given too many chances. I like Nevill's keeping a lot, and he's not the worst batsman.

But I can see why the selectors have been tempted to bolster the batting by including Wade despite his deficiencies with the gloves. I hope he goes well.

Nevill gets massive stick for not being the Haddin/Gilchrist mould. We need players to stay in and value their wicket plus score runs.

Looking at Nevill's innings passed 70 balls.

59 (147) v. England @ Birmingham
35 (83) v. NZ @ Perth
66 (110) v. NZ @ Adelaide - DN Test
32 (94) v. NZ @ Wellington
9 (115) v. SL @ Pallekele
60* (153) v. SA @ Perth

Don't really think he was a problem. A lot of situations have called for him to hit out or get out or stay in because of collapses.

Only got 1 innings v. West Indies.

Pop quiz. What do maddinson and mitch marsh have in common.

1. Both were loved by a selector (mitch rod marsh and maddinson waugh)

2. Neither actually has any idea how to bat properly.

Clever.

Funnily enough, Wade has probably got as much of a claim to a pure batting position as Maddinson. It's when be puts the gloves on that people get nervous.

I would have been good with Wade as a batsman like Brad Haddin said. Rather that than Maddo.

Maddinson.. lol. Ferg axed after 1 test, sure he didnt score in the shield, but neither did Maddinson. Another Golden child selection rather than on form.

Ferguson needed to be dropped after averaging 2.4 in his last 5 innings. Not to be replaced by Maddinson though.

Reckon Junior has picked Maddinson for the lulz.

That said, it is not like he has 0 talent so while he is in ill back him in.

It's more the point that we need blokes who can comfortably dig in, and Maddinson gets a go.

So we'll have another batsman who will be told to make a Test debut and do what he's not naturally good at. (And I realise all batsmen need to bat for all situations, but that patently doesn't apply to Australian cricket circa 2016.)

Like all the selections. Maddison hasn't earned it but and it's a big but he does have the talent to be a world class batsman. Think back to Clarke vs Hodge 04. I'll let this one play out. Good selections otherwise.

Clarke had a modest FC record but he had played 34 ODIs for Australia and averaged over 40 when he was picked for the Test team. The talent had been demonstrated at international level over a period of time, even if it was a different format. It's a fair bit different to Maddinson.

Maddinson is obviously one of those "gut feel" selections. Only reason, i'd say, he's in ahead of Patterson.

What Handscombe like as a keeper? If Wade is keeping like crap we can take the pads off him and put Handscombe behind the stumps. Not sure how good Handscombe is though.

Wade only slightly better bat than Neville with the bat? Come off it, he has two centuries and averages more 50% more runs an innings than Neville.

Happy to admit he's an averag keeper but he's a far better batsman than Neville and unfortunately at the moment we need someone like that at 7.

Harsh on Nevill. He is very good behind the stumps it's his batting that's let him down. A player with Wade's batting and Nevill's keeping would be an absolute superstar.

Talking about the above post regarding Wade and Handscomb, Wade is not a good batsman either.

Can't see how Maddinson leapfrogged Patterson...or Head or Ferguson or Bailey.

You almost lost me at Travis Head than I fully switched off at Bailey. I love George as much as the next guy but his time is passed as a test batsman.
