Brett Lee: “I am absolutely shocked. I can’t believe what’s happened. When you think about the guys that have missed out ... Pete Nevill, to me he’s done a great job behind the stumps and he’s done pretty well with his batting as well,” Lee told Triple M Brisbane’s Marto and Ed Kavalee for Breakfast.

In my opinion not selecting the best sides for the South African ODI series has backfired. Saffers come here with their tails up and the results speak for themselves. Good to see some young talent being selected rather than going to recycled players like Henriques.

Better than averaging 20 and hanging your hat on 60 odd in a lost cause against a 2 man pace attack.

59 v. Anderson and Broad is a solid thing. Wade scored some good runs too. Both have played great knocks and bad knocks. Nevill is more stay in and grnid than Wade and Wade is more of a scorer than Nevill in terms of attitude.

Let's not hang our hats on Wade's mistakes and Nevill's mistakes. All keepers have made mistakes, major ones. It is what it is. Though I feel Nevill is a better choice than Wade, it is not like it is end of the world especially when Maddo is in the team.

Ex bowler wanted the better keeper to stay? I'm not surprised at Lee's comments.

I'm not a Wade fan, hope Whiteman really scores some big runs next few matches.

??? his first class strike rate is 48.

If you're averaging 40 and striking at 48, you're not going out and slapping quick runs and falling over.
And he's hit a lot of boundaries. What does that say about him? He either hits a 4 or can't get off strike, aka not great at grinding an innings out, just good at doing nothing.

More like NSW men wanted NSW men to stay

Whilst I am happy Wade is in and think he is good enough as a keeper I am surprised they dropped Nevill.

Lol why? Was obvious BEFORE this series he wasn't up to it and his 3 failures out of 4 were a killer blow.

Gets treated like an absolute God for some reason despite being a very ordinary test cricketer. Never seen hype like it

That's why. Despite his shortcomings he seems to be one of the favoured ones.

Kinda feels like Nevill was dropped because of the failures of the top 6 batsmen. His primary job is to keep. He needs more runs, thats obvious, however he has a FC aveage of 37 (over 40 before he debuted) which means he can bat. Just feels like we need the best keeper with future tours in mind (india etc.) as drops are so costly.

On another note, bit disappointing none of the top 6 can bowl anything. Smith doesn't bowl himself anymore. Maddo can bowl a few dollies but thats about it.

Because a keeper's best attributes should be his keeping. The batting is secondary. If you can find one that can do both, great, but without anyone else knocking down the door, they probably should have stuck with him. And I'm no particular fan of Nevill.

Simple as that he averages 22 in tests. Not good enough top 6 or not

He has a test average of 23 so no - he can't bat.

So if Nevill was a guaranteed duck every innings you'd still pick him?

Davey Warner can throw down a few leggies as well. Underused imo. Could be because of his thumb, however.

But Smith definitely under bowls himself. He's not the greatest spinner, but he is definitely underutilized. Steve Waugh did the same thing when he was captain as well, he was woefully under bowled after he was named skipper.

Of course not, there's a balance, but first and foremost he needs to keep. An average of 23 is not great but that used to be about standard for wicketkeepers. Plus, you could point to a few good innings. Gilly changed the way we think of them, now we want to average about 40, hit regular centuries etc. I don't see Wade as that much of an upgrade in batting to counter balance the downgrade in keeping. I just hope someone like Whiteman or Carey can come on soon and replace Wade.

He has a FC average of 37, so yes he can bat. He hasn't produced yet in tests but many batters have had similar problems. didn't Mark Waugh take ages before he got a century and was averaging quite low for that time as well..

Exactly and with an average of 23 the balance is firmly AGAINST him in the modern game - we aren't talking about the 50s here! It's not like he is a superstar keeper anyway. He is serviceable with the gloves and truly awful with the but.

Wade is a HUGE upgrade on batting.

Yes he can bat at first class level - not at Test level - what was Hick's FC average?

The batters who have similar problems don't keep getting picked for test cricket.

And L O flipping L at the Mark Waugh comparison.

Think we might be looking at Wade's batting through rose coloured glasses too.

I am not comparing Nevill to Waugh... I am saying that batters can sometimes take a while to find their feet at international level.
