Sayers is better at that part of it- swinging it. I rate Bird and Mennie playing ahead of him was a laughable disgrace, but I'm not sure Id want Halewood and Bird, as they are fairly similar bowlers. Sayers is something different, helps balance the attack, and would be important if there is reverse swing around.

Bird is a swing bowler

For a swing bowler he doesn't do it as often as I'd like. Sayers swings it, but also is one of the better reverse swing bowlers. Just feel in a dead rubber we can afford to take a punt on Sayers, especially at the Adelaide Oval.

Jackson Bird has runs on the board at that level.

21 wickets at 25 with an economy of a touch over 3 an over is very good for a test match wicket taking bowler.

Seems like the selectors are being stubborn once again by picking a debutante over someone bleedingly obvious for the side.

If it was the first test against Pakistan I'd 100% agree. This test is a dead rubber, we need to use it to try these players and see what they need to work on if they do get dropped.

Would that not apply to a guy who is also on the fringes of test selection?

Remember, these guys really are only warming the bleaches till Pattinson, Cummins, NCN even are ready to stake a long term place in the test side.

This is such a cop out defence of Neville.

It's not Gilchrist - it's Dhoni, it's McCullum (when he kept), it's De Villiers (when he kept), it's De Kock, it's Bairstow et al.

This is not some pipe dream that people have about the 2nd coming of Gilchrist. It's the standard for all the best countries who have an extra batsmen.

I don't even really think that Wade is the answer - in the context of picking so many other young players I would've had a look at Whiteman. But I do know that, on his test match batting to date, Neville is not the answer.

Don't forget Andy Flower. Averaged 52 while keeping and batting mainly at No. 5.

NCN? You cannot be possibly serious. Try Behrendorff maybe.

I'd rather see if Sayers could work, especially as we have Ashes tours in the future where he suits English conditions.

(would like to preface this by saying I am not a fan of NCN - feels that Cricket Australia are hence the addition to the conversation)

Breaks down more than Cummins!

I think Australia have no intention to play Lyon this test , he will be 12th man , They just wanted him to feel as if he is still in the side while they work out what they should do for the next test series ......

NCN is a good bowler but just can't stay on the park. A little bit up and down which would be a problem on flat Australian wickets. Can't see him ever becoming a top 3 quick bowler in the country but would be a very handy bloke to be able to call upon in the event of a couple of injuries.

What an underrated cricketer he was. Aside from a brief couple of years in the early 00's where there was a glimmer of light he was holding together one of the worst international cricketing teams in history. All whilst under complete political turmoil.

The only country he struggle against was England (only one test v Australia) and he scored runs in all continents except the UK. Only in his final calendar year did he start to struggle as age caught up with him, and he never went more than 8 tests without a century. If he wasn't born in a country that would put his career under such duress who knows what he could've achieved.

Interesting stat - he has 22% of Zimbabwe's test centuries (from 5% of their test innings)

As bad as Lyon has been, you need a spinner in Adelaide, especially if it is hot.

Lyon has gone 97 overs without taking a wicket , that's a whole new level of bad !!!!!!!

I agree, and unfortunately O'Keefe can't stay fit. However you need a spinner. It gets hot in Adelaide. I'd give Lyon this test then re-evaluate, with the potential of Agar/O'Keefe (if fit) coming in.

Agar really picked the wrong game to get an injury.

With the series already lost , there would be no point in having Sayers in the 12 and not playing him and it would be a bit harsh for Bird to miss out again , so I think Australia have no other option other than to make Lyon 12th man

Bird won't play.

No way are we playing 4 quicks in Adelaide.

The advance forecast here is 24-26 every day of the test.

Still warm enough and Smith won't run a risk of getting suspended for over rates- as it is we struggle to bowl them.

We arent going to go into the Adelaide test w/o a spinner. Over-rates, plus spinners help change the tone of the game. The batters can become used to pace and spin just helps it break up their rhythm.

I meant if we have an uninjured bowling line-up to choose from and could look at guys like Pattinson, Cummins etc. Sorry probably belongs in it's own thread given the thread topic.

I haven't followed a lot about Sayers, but on Bird I really liked what he offerred us in his short stint in the test side. Do we have enough strike bowlers if we pick him though? Both Hazelwood and Bird would trend towards that line and length style. Perhaps that's what we need.

I would go:
Starc, Pattinson, Hazelwood & Lyon, though like yourself I'm losing a bit of faith in lyon. would love to see a Zampa or Boyce really make an impact at shield level and make a case. Be great to have a good leggie again.

In regards to Cummins, for mine I don't think he should even be entertained until he can play 3 shield games on the trot. If he can't do that then he's should be taken off a central contract and told to earn a proper living till he's fit enough to justify the coin he gets.

That comparison would have a lot more credence if the role hadn't changed completely since Healy's day.

Just because the role had changed doesn't magically imbue us with a quality keeper that can also bat. That's just the reality.

Besides, I'm not disputing that Nevill needed to pick up his game. I'm disputing the idiotic claim that he's the got the worst batting record of an Australian keeper in living memory.

If Lyon is dropped the important question that requires answering is....who will lead the southern cross song?

Well of players who've had more than a dozen cracks at it, he'd have one of the worst records for all nations over the last 10 years
