Couldn't agree more with that. Not sure whether Patterson bowls at all but Maddinson does throw down some left arm pies so maybe his batting & bowling won the selectors over :drunk:

Actually, that is one scenario I could see....if they're planning to dump Lyon and go with four quicks on the Adelaide (and possibly Brisbane) deck. That leaves Maddinson as the "spinner" that can roll his arm over.

But even then, I'd have gone with Maxwell or even Travis Head as that option.

At least Maddinson keeps some of the Wade Whingeing down...

Apparently he made a hundred last game on the SCG turner?

Yep. And considering this test match is at Sydney, it makes it a great selection.

Wait, wut? The Test's being played where?

So what is the side now?
In all honesty I think we've got two options:

Option 1: 7 batsmen (incl. wicketkeeper) and 4 bowlers.
Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith (c)
Handscomb
Maddinson
Wade (wk)
Starc
Hazelwood
Bird (or Sayers)
Lyon

Option 2: 6 batsmen (incl. wicketkeeper) and 5 bowlers.
Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith (c)
Handscomb
Wade (wk)
Starc
Hazelwood
Bird
Sayers
Lyon

The first one is probably more likely but I there is a chance we may want the extra bowling option. Lyon is very lucky the guys that would've pushed him out are both injured, and Patterson is extremely stiff to miss.
well if we're going to pick Nic Maddinson we might as well play 5 bowlers instead.
...but no seriously, surely we have to play 6 bats and a keeper.

3 new players to the middle order.
Neville Is prob a better keeper than wade, unsure why they are going with Wade again.
I guess it's the gamble they had to take. Has wade improved his keeping?? The only way to know for sure is to play him. I would say that if he grasses more than one chance in these four tests that would be the end of him.

I'm honestly at a loss to how you could possibly justify the Maddison selection

I like a challenge. Does maddinson play for 6ers & patterson for the thunder?
If so mark Waugh gets a new player in the team & doesn't hurt the thunders chance to win the big bash

Yep. If you're looking for extraordinary on their day, don't care about current form, young batsman with potential, can bowl a bit if needed, you pick Travis Head because it's on his home deck.

But instead we've got Mark Waugh's lovechild based on some pointless State-rivalry which is fine for BigFooty but shouldn't be used as the yardstick for national selection.

Ok, now that I've calmed down...

Don't **** this up Maddinson. And if you do, I hope you get dropped immediately.

If the experience of the mid 80s are anything to go by, there are going to be a lot of players in the Shield comp with a couple of Tests under their belt, it's going to be a case of trying anything for a while until hopefully you find what clicks.

Must be a sweet feeling knowing that a national selector has a hard on for you despite you displaying no discernible test match temperament.

The funny part about it is that even Mark Waugh himself criticised Maddinson for his T20 temperament during the big bash.

Maddison wtf

yet another NSW selection joke
Not this again.

Given the one that should have been selected instead is also from NSW I doubt it applies here.

Option 3:
play 4 quicks and no specialist spinner. Smith can bowl some spin.

Yeah this time it's Mark Waugh bias.
