Still they should have picked him. He offers something different & in dead rubber it was worth a try. Bird & Hazelwood offer pretty much the same thing

they all offer more than Lyon, particularly given the conditions and his current form. i would like to have seen 4 seamers.

Its a clusterfiretruck that's for sure. selectors (marsh) made a rod (seewhatididthur) for their own backs. Non selection of Bird caused enough ripples in the media a few weeks ago, and as a result gained momentum to extent when a spot became available it was unfair to overlook him again.

The pink ball wicket taking is interesting. Last season okeefe was labelled by the media as a pink ball specialist in attempt to get him into the team. Didn't work

McGrath was very tall at 6ft5 giving him extra bounce and freakishly accurate. Plus whilst not express I don't think he was ever quite as 'slow' as lot of people seem to make out now.

His success isn't a green light to play military paced bowlers.

yeah, surely having an accurate bowler at 130 who can swing the ball is better than having an inconsistent 140 quick who can only seem it.

Yes the height factor was huge in McGraths case I'll give you that. But if a bloke is getting wickets he should be considered no matter what, and I think the conditions would suit Sayers. And it's not like Bird is express is it?

in previous year definitely but with the introduction of the day/night test they're leaving more grass on the wicket to protect the pink ball which means less pitch degradation and assistance for the spinners.

They've wound it down a bit this year. It holds together better but there will still be foot marks come into play from day 3. Spin has always taken wickets in the pink ball shield games at AO.

4 quicks rarely works. If it swings heaps and wickets fall quickly you wouldn't need 4 anyway. If the game goes the distance a spinner will be a better option in the 2nd innings than a 4th quick

Cant remember the last time AUs went with 4 quicks be 4 years ago at a guess. I don't think they should change strategy based on form. Lyon plays or gets replaced by another spinner

The pink ball going the distance in the uae meant the very grassy day night test here was a once off, they will want 5 days if possible.

CA dug themselves a hole with this one. Moronicly not picking Bird in Hobart results in the situation where they know he should have been in and should be next in so pick him. However much as Bird in Hobart it makes more sense to pick the local boy. If Bird was going to play they should've saved themselves the headache and not even picked Sayers in the squad.

Dare say the changes from the final Indian test to the 1st test v West Indies were positive. They were pretty good ins

Yep, had a look at the summer scorecards. A few interesting things. The Test schedule was mixed up with one dayers. So although our 1st Test against West Indies started in early December our 3rd Test against them was an Australia Day Test in Adelaide which surprising to me shows me Ian Chappell was actually playing that Test. I thought he had retired at end of World Series Cricket. We lost the series 2-0.
However we also played 3 Tests against England and won that 3 nil after the previous summer the Test side lost 5-1 to Poms with World Series Cricket going on and weak Aussie Test side. They were not only spreading out the Tests and one dayers over the summer but also a Test v West Indies would be followed by us playing England in a Test.
By end of summer Test side looked quite different again. Ray Bright had gone from Test side, so had Rodney Hogg and oddly Ashley Mallett played a few late Tests just like Ian Chappell in later part of summer. Julien Wiener made Test debut in summer. So did Lenny Pascoe from WSC previous summer and very handy left armed bowler Geoff Dymock did quite well teaming up with Lillee against the Poms.
Peter Toohey and spinner Jimmy Higgs also played a few Tests. So looks like close to 20 different players used over those 20 Tests. Clearly a side post WSC Cricket was still being worked on to find a good balance.

It's not exaggerated, going from the last time he spent in the test team he would either drop someone OR not go for a catch that he should have every innings or 2nd innings. Now he may have improved and l hope so.

Nevill isn't faultless but you barely noticed Nevill's wicketkeeping which is a good sign.

Not sure where l would find dropped catches and, missed stumpings and "not going for catches". Would say it is abnormally high for a test keeper.

It's my opinion that his missed catches/stumpings etc are not worth the runs that he gets as he only averages 37 or so. You can think differently if u want.

Not sure how much home town support the aussies get tomorrow. After the selectors screwing over mennie & ferguson & now wost of all sayers. SA crowd might be more interested in some blokes failing.

Selection does give SA a good chance at going top of the shield when they play the Vics this weekend. I hope Sayers gets another MOTM not that the selectors will notice

I know its a test match and against harder opposition but Bird has been woeful today, full, wide, leg side. Bit all over the place. Going at 6 per over.

A query to my Australian supporting counterparts - do any of you guys still think starc has a bit to prove?

He was colossal in Sri Lanka, absolutely no doubt about it.
But save for a good burst at the start in Perth and 2 overs in Hobart he hasn't looked likely at home.

Obviously he's got all the tools, but is there a scenario in which you could see him being under any pressure in the next, say, 12 months?

I thin he is a great limited overs bowled and average Test bowler, incredibly overrated

Thats just silly talk. Career ave. of 27 which drops again to 23 in the last two years. Finished 7th in total wickets in 2015 and 9th again this year (playing up to 3 test less than the top wicket takers).
