Why wait until South Africa?
If Bailey isn't in our best XI then why play him?
I understand your point of view but if you take as a guide the fact that we have picked the same side for four tests in a row, I just can't see it happening. Out of curiosity, who do you think comes in?

Tough choice. Hughes is the most logical but I want him to play out the shield season and then a season of English county. We know he can score first class runs. He was our leading run scorer on tour when he was dropped in England.

North was the obvious seletion but is injured. Don't see a point in White and Maddinson/Silk/Head are not ready.
Lynn might be a good selection. In good first class form (averaging over 50 plus a century against England in a tour match).

And if he fails he will never been seen again.

Why?

The selectors aren't bigfooty.

I'd have thought that this would be the perfect time for a young batsman to come in. Easier to come into a winning side than have to face up against the Saffers on debut

Much easier at the start of a series than the end. If a debutant made a pair in the first test he'd probably get another go. But if a debutant makes a pair in Sydney next week they won't be needing their passport for a while.

Why? If he's next in line now a pair won't change that.

And if we rate a bloke we have to back him to perform a bit better than that.

How many batsmen have had a go since Rob Quiney last played for Australia?

Rob Quiney got a game at the start of the series in place of an injured Watson. When Watson recovered Quiney was dropped after getting two tests.

A talented youngster coming in to make his debut is completely different to a 30 year old journeyman coming in because of an injury.

Harris will be rested and I can't see Watson coming up with his groin the way it is. He looked like an old man in the field today. Wouldn't be against NCN coming in for his debut in Sydney, and perhaps Lynn as well. Not sure we'll make anymore than these forced changes if we don't have to.

But if we rated him at the time then surely we would have backed him in at some point since then?

Unfortunately for him, a short stint was enough to show that he wasn't quite up to it.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of time for Lynn. That's why I'd prefer to see him held back from this game and into the side at a later date.

I'd drop Smith personally, has only 1 decent score this series.

You fruitloop! No chance Smith will get dropped, a ton in the last test. Plus Smith will be our next test captain!

No point bringing in another batsman IMO. All back up options are playing bbl ATM. Do we really want someone making their debut off that. They would be destined to fail. Picking a guy at the start of the series and the end are completely different kettle of fish. Just ask Chris Woakes.

IMO it's best to let the candidates battle it out in the shield after the bbl. if we decide Bailey isn't up to it we take the best two options across. But it is important making a decision one way or the other.

Tbh though batting wise (unless Watson is injured) we should go in unchanged IMO, this time in the Perth test people were calling for Rogers head. Things can change very quickly. Only Clarke, Warner and Haddin from our top 7 have really earned long term loyalty from the selectors.

I don't think we have any shield games before selecting players to tour South Africa.

There's no Shield before we head to SA and if we don't see Bailey as the best option over there, there is no way in which he should be selected. Therefore, if you're looking from a preparation for South Africa POV, surely a test match would be better than the BBL.

Quiney hasn't been picked again because he was rubbish for the remainder of last seasons Shield. He has been decent this season but a spot hasn't been available.

Quiney was picked coming off a couple of decent seasons and when several better batsmen were all out form at the same time. He was very lucky to get picked and would have been flat out playing for Victoria ten years ago.
