So Doolan is their only as a back up to Watson and Bailey will definitely play? Nothing would annoy me more to see Bailey score a 50 under no pressure, keep his spot in the side for South Africa only to see him fail miserably against the best attack in the world. I know we are winning but we need to be on the front foot and looking to improve the side. He's not a test batsman.

I guess it depends on your definition of pressure.

I am sure Bailey would be batting under immense pressure, simply because his spot in the side - and probably test career - is on the line.

Shane Watson 101

Hayden used to do it time and again as well.

Hayden didn't have as many chances. He had a good run, got found out, subsequently dropped, fixed his deficiencies then came back in the side. Hughes hasn't fixed his deficiencies.

I don't care if it's a dead rubber, if Bailey comes in at 4/100 in Sydney with his test career on the line, that's not what I'd call under "no pressure". I agree that he's probably not a test batsman but he hasn't quite put that to bed yet. One more chance in Sydney is logical.

Interesting that Doolan is still considered the next in line in the top order.

Feel a bit for Bailey that Shane Watson's fitness will decide whether he gets one more crack to save his career, but if he had performed in the first four tests then he wouldn't be in that spot.

Bring in the best performed fast bowler at Shield level whoever it is. I admit to being biased but im pretty sure thats Sayers.

Sayers will be John Hastngs Mk II, minus the ability with the bat that the Duke has

Yes he has.

Hughes does this time and again. If they haven't already, stamp his papers as a shield player only

Zero chance of this being the case IMO. He's what 25? We have shocking batting depth considering Rogers, Watson, Smith and Bailey are in our test side. Unless the next generation of batsmen like Maddinson and Head really step up I can't see Hughes not playing a fair bit more for Australia. Also Hughes averages 33 in tests which isn't that compared to Rogers, Watson and Smith who only average a few runs more.

No, he hasn't. They get found out at international level time and again.

Other than Watson he's had double the test matches the others have had at least

This.
Bailey will realise he's nowhere near guaranteed a plane ticket to South Africa and he'll be desperate to make runs in Sydney, particularly in the first innings. If he fails he'll be very well testing the patience of the selectors.

Doolan is averaging 39 in the Shield this year and has a first-class average of <40, why is he being considered at all? Are we this desperate?

Because he's been decent for the previous few years? Only other logical choice has a history of failing at international level.

Crazy old uncle Inverarity I think doesn't rate Sheffield Shield. He rarely picks on Shield form anymore and just goes on hunches.

I don't rate Doolan whatsoever and can't believe he is in the squad. Maybe Invers sees something in him that I don't but he looks only an average Shield player that will get found out badly by quality attacks.

They won't drop Bailey even for SA. They rate his leadership (despite the fact that most of the squad are older than him and don't need leading anyway) and he's now part of the boys club so will remain a fixture in the side for a while.

161 v Steyn and Philander helps.

He has the technique to succeed for mine, has been around for a while (vs the very raw Maddinson, Lynn et al)

Has to be the next cab off the rank, reckon he'll go alright given the opportunity

More experience. He's also done alright in ODIs.

Watson is the best player we've had in ODI's since Hayden retired. And Hughes hasn't got more experience than Bucky. Also means a much larger sample size to know that he's not up to test standard. Smith is touted as Australia's next captain, they won't drop him. I don't like Bailey, but if they drop him they have to go an alternate route to Hughes.

Agreed, give me White, 566 runs @ 50.55this season and nearly 8,500 FC runs @ 41 over his career.

We need someone who can bat at 3. So Doolan or Hughes and like me they probably want Hughes to play out the shield season and play county cricket.

I'm going on the assumtion that Watson will play and bat at 3

My assumption is that Doolan is cover for Watson and if Watson is fit Bailey will get one last chance.

Otherwise Doolan comes in for Watson and Faulkner comes in at 7 with Haddin at 6.
Coulter-Nile is cover for Harris.

No change would be ideal though I'd like to see Chris Lynn in the side sooner rather than later. Perhaps for Bailey or if Watson is injured.

Harris or Watson will not be rested, they can rest during the ODIs. It's simple, if they are fit enough to play then they play, if they aren't they wont.

If Harris doesn't come up then it looke like Coulter-Nile might be the man to come in though it would have been interesting to see Bollinger play now that McDermott is in charge and not that idiot cooley who ruined a heap of bowlers, including the likes of Johnson and Bollinger.

If Watson is fit to bat but not bowl then maybe Faulkner should come in for Bailey.

If Watson is fit and can bowl, then Bailey will play.
If Watson is picked solely as a batsman, Faulkner will replace Bailey
If Watson does not play, Doolan will replace him and Faulkner will replace Bailey
