agreed you should be blooding some of these young guys against GWS

Does it really matter what I think, this board needs a whipping boy and he is it.

I think his form isn't or hasn't been as bad as some are making out. IMO we have far bigger problems with the midfield and how much or should I say how little pressure they apply to the ball carrier. If that improved, you would see an automatic improvement in Ottens performances.

I bet he isn't dropped?

Don't dodge my question

You have made a claim that he has become the whipping boy so I asked you are you happy with how he holds his ground in a contest and his intent to tackle

I would like your opinion

Will it improve Shaw as a player, and therefore improve the team for the future?

Some people can't look beyond the upcoming game.

Look, i agree that we should be looking forward and picking players fir tge future but that doesn't mean dropping someone.

I would loke to have Otten play the softer and less pressure role that Doughty or Riley are doing now with Shaw to play Ottens role and in the long run that will improve the side.

I'm a big fan of Otto, but unfortunately its probably time for him to find some form in the 2's. Was he on Gunston ? If so he kept him quiet, but he is lacking confidence and attack on the ball.

Bernie - was he tagged out of it ??? Burgoyne was also quiet, were those head-to-head ?

Petrenko I dont think will be dropped, Sando has a man crush !

Kerridge will probably be unlucky, Martin will be lucky ! (also could he be in trouble with MRP, I think not but you never know).

What I think will happen;
Out - Otten, Kerridge (only if Hendo fit)
In - Shaw, Hendo

FWIW and probably not appropriate in this forum, Hawthorns game plan relies on skill and execution (did I read their DE was 80% which is crazy) in finals and high pressure games, will it work ? We weren't good enough to break it down, this time and that's what I reckon Sando will be most disappointed about !

I don't think he is the problem. I also don't think he is playing a role he is suited to, therefore under those circumstances - he is being the best job he can.

Therefore, he doesn't deserve to be dropped as others are getting a far easier ride for doing an easier role.

To answer your question, yes I am.

Alex

He is playing a similar role (3rd Tall) as he did in his Rookie year

So are you suggesting play him in a softer role in order to mask his deficiencies?

Otten is not my Whipping Boy and no matter what position he plays I expect him to 1. not go to ground so easily and 2. Stick his tackles

Now if Otten was being pushed off the ball by a Brown or Cloke then I would cut him some slack but the fact he is being out muscled by all types and the amount of miss tackles is a real concern and I believe it comes back to his lack of confidence to put real pressure on that knee to hold his ground

The reality is that he has not regained his form or confidence since being back from his knee injury and I believe he needs to fight his way back into the side through the sanfl

Agree with most of these and would put Vince in the outs as well, he doesn't deserve a game to rack up 30 easy touches. Leave Reilly in and drop Bernie, just isn't good enough for a senior mid to be so soft.

Wish one of Bernie questions last week to Tex had been...you are 100kg and built like a brick out house, why do you play like soft **** so often against good teams?

I would rather doughty, he does about the same good as reilly does but doesnt screw up as often. Also I prefer a bloke in the back 50 going 3rd man who punches and makes sure the ball doesnt easily go over the back.

That's 50% of the play, what about the other 50%?

Unless Neil Craig is coach again and were kicking it backwards into their forward line?

Not Chasing, harassing, pressure, tackling and getting back to cover space and area for them to lead into can be constituted as being lazy.

What happened to the old Fiery Alex? Last year you would have been building the bonfire. Are you on prozac?

At least you are still blaming Neil craig.

if Thommo is carrying an injury, i'd rest him this week against the GWS.

Out:
Thommo (rest)
Vince (not doing enough for a senior player)
Otten (to give Shaw a run)
Doughty (give a younger player a run)

In:
Lyons (lets see what he can do in AFL)
Hendo (i'd make him sub)
Jeansch (attacking half back)
Shaw

Kerridge to get a full game this week

Martin out - shouldn't have even picked him if we wanted a defender.

I wonder if playing him as a defender was always the plan or if this was as a result of Hendo being a late withdrawal? If it was the latter then I can understand it somewhat, but I really thought he was a good like for like swap for Douglas.

Gutsy little bugger, really like his work when he gets to run and break the lines - think he's definitely got a future if played up on a wing.

Otten has to go, has been crap 3 weeks in a row.
Walker'd be on thin ice after this weeks effort.
If Thommo needs a rest, this is the week to give it to him.

Hendo to come back, Shaw and Lyons should be given a run this week, I hope Kerridge is given another game, feel kinda sorry for him playing his first game against such a quality side, he was always going to struggle.

Outs : Otten, Martin
Ins : Shaw, Hendo

On notice : Walker, Vince

To bring in a youngish player, play him out of position, and then drop him sends a really poor message IMO.

OUT: Otten - Has been horrible for far too long now, McKay or Vince, Dogga or Reilly
IN: Shaw, Jaensch, Lyons -Must start rewarding young kids for consistently outstanding SANL form.

I would go with the following back 6 or the next 3-4 games:

^^^^^^

Petrenko Shaw Jaensch

Johncock Rutten Talia

I like that defence Captain. I love Petrenko, my third favourite crow behind Thommo and Johncock but he is inconsistent in the forward line at the moment. That defence has got same pace and creativity with Rutten and Johncock as the experience. Reilly to go in there as well. Definately our dence has been once paced for a while.

Dropping martin after a single game would be terrible strategy (considering we only had about35% of possesion). Give him an actual chance to show what he can do. Hate bringing in people for one game and then dropping them.

I also thought Otten played well. He was on Guntston for most of the match and held him very well. Didnt provide any run from defence (oh how i miss you macca) but neither did anyone else.

Players under pressure

Otten - he's into his second season back now, we should be starting to see some signs of the 2009 Otten. We aren't. The ball handling and decision making that seemed so assured when he debuted have disappeared

Martin - ruscy is right - the withdrawal of Hendo forced Martin back. I'm sure Plan A was to play him further up the ground. Hope he gets another chance.

Kerridge - only because last in, first out. Really hope he survives and plays again this week.

I can see one change with Otten out for Shaw, Henderson or Jaensch. Henderson the favourite.

Would personally like to see Shaw, Jaensch and Lyons all play but I can't see any established players being dropped. So unless it is a Kerridge or Martin that makes way then they'll have to bide their time.

Out
Thommo -rest
Johncock - rest
Otten - form
Pets - hate to say it but form

In
Hendo
Knights
Shaw
Symes

Kerridge and Lynch play full game and Callinan to sub.

Would be tempting to drop Vince for Lyons. But too many changes and GWS could be a good hit out for Vince.

Knights but no Lyon. what has knights done to earn a call up.

another question I can't really rationalise, but is our lack of injuries also covering over a number of issues we really have?

In reality, only a small number of players maybe injury free - but how many of them are realistic chances to be picked? and what does that say about our drafting/trading?

of primary concern to me is the form of Luke Brown and Mitch Grigg - I would have thought that Brown would have been pressing for selection Rd 1 given the hype (not from this board obviously) given by the club and Mitch as an older player should surely have been in consideration (I am assuming an injury here?)

So is a soft opening to the season in conjunction with no injuries to key players covering over some real issues?

^^^^^^

Petrenko Shaw Jaensch

Johncock Rutten Talia

Mackay: 20 touches, 6 tackles, 0 goals
Vince: 11 touches, 2 tackles, 1 goal

I think Mackay is a little safer than Vince.

Out: Otten Kerridge
In: Shaw Henderson

Kerridge looked well off the pace for mine but would be happy for him to get another crack

Otten looks slow and out of it. Needs some time in the SANFL and Shaw has much more pace.

Matthew Wright is also unlucky not to have had a crack so far and was good for North again.
