Like the Boggler does?
That's right. Has had a reasonable preseason after being dropped in last years finals series. Still not selected for the first game this year. I think he kicked 3 for the Sewerage Farmers in that week. Brought in for the second game and played well.

I see you are sticking to your guns on this. Fair enough, but I'm staying with my view that (1) he made mistakes in the first half that would have cost more against a good team, and (2) 20 other blokes went OK as well.

I'd prefer to give any of the following a go:

Adams
Davies
Greenwood
Grima, B
Hansen
Lower
McMahon
Ross
JWS
Thompson, S

look im not bagging swallow, but with simmo and rawlings in that midfield as well, swallow might need to get some time in the magoos as we need an injection of effective kicking and pace.

Once simmo retires, spitz will slot into that starting 22.

Please list those mistakes. OK let me list some of them for you. One out of bounds on the full in the first. Should have hit the target. Un Brown Like if you ask me. Also he layed a bad handball that may have resulted in a goal in the first quarter if my memory serves me incorrectly. I'll watch the replay at 3:30 pm this Wednesday on Fox to remind myself.

After that what he did in the game was OK in my books.

Remember the Hun listed him with 3 clangers.

Now for the replacments you listed

JWS should be in the side as soon as he is fit but should it be at the expense of Brown who played well on the weekend or someone like Watt who struggled a touch? Smith for Watt is more like for like then Smith for Brown is.

I think Hansen has plenty of upside but he still needs to add to his frame. It wont hurt the kid if he starts to dominate at VFL standard. Sure he will play more as the season unfolds.

I like the Echelon and McMahon and I have no doubt that these 2 will find themselves in the senior line up sometime this year.

I also like the looks of Adams. He and Ross will snap at the heels of Campbell and Thomas. This is good for the club.

Grima can kick a ball but he is like a StKilda player. Always injured. I set my watch to when he pings a hamstring.

Greenwood is young and a year in the VFL wont hurt him. If he kicks arse and deserves a spot then play him.

As for Davies. Time will Tell.

Guys must EARN their spots.

Sorry mate, but so does Brown. That is the magoos.

Thursday lotto is anyones guess!
Personally i would play Hanson on a wing perhaps against
Young if his groin comes thru fitness test.
Secondly Thompson would be back in for he
shouldnt have been dropped in the first place!
OUTS-L.Brown -1 game doesnt make a season
prefer kids than shopping trolleys!
Watt is next cab off the rank for me
but who knows what the riddler Laid will do?
over + out

Guys must EARN their spots.

I think Browny had a pretty good game on Sunday. He didn't have much defensive responsibility but he got to packs and contests, he moved the ball forward pretty well and he was aggressive in his tackling.

But it is madness to be defending Brown on the basis that people should earn their spots. Brown has been given so many games on on type rather than performance, mainly because we needed a tall that could contest in the forward line after Thommo went down (something brown was very poor at last year).

Funnily enough, as it stands now - he should lose his spot based on type. He could be adequate again on the wing, but he just doesn't have the pace or inside midfield capability we need against Hawthorn and going forward. And we are covered in the tall forward area - and it is a position he has nowhere near earned his spot. As a backman it is not even worth discussing.

There are at least three guys who should be in the midfield rotation ahead of Brown this week even if we knew we were going to get exactly the same performance from the Boggler as we got vs the Tigers.

You are well and truly on your own Zondor.
After what happened last year why would we drop brown when he played a half decent game.Lets not flirt with form even if it might be fleeting.

Jesse's comes in this week it wont be for Watt as he is a protected species,I think harding would be the obvious choice as everyone else is needed in areas jesse cant cover at the moment with his lack of match fitness.

For mine it will be no change:)

Trying to second guess Laidley I think Brown will play. If Smith plays he will come in for Swallow. There are too many tallish players in the opposition forward line for Laidley to drop a tall, he needs plan a,b,c and d.

If there were odds on selections decisions, the odds you would get on Laidley dropping Brown would make MelbourneFC's look short. It is not going to happen. I imagine the same will apply to Watt.

It shits me, because while we're likely thinking about plan a, b, c & d on how not to lose this game, Hawthorn are thinking about how to win it.

I think in the end this will be the clincher.

I would never want to lose but I would rather lose attacking than lose defending. I think we need to learn from the corresponding fixture last year back our attack and go all out regardless of whether we build up an early lead or not.

Brown stats.

1st Quarter

19:22 Shepherds for McIntosh
16:07 Backs into pack in D50 and Spoils Richo. Very brave act.
11:04 Marks from Hale Kick, Kick is a clanger to Thompson.
8:52 Handball recieve from Simpson, handballs to Rawlings.
8:51 Handball recieve from Rawlings, handball back again to Rawlings results in a clanger.
8:17 Marks McIntosh kick, kicks long to F50 hotspot, Thompson marks and goals.
6:56 Backs into D50 hot spot, gets collected by Firrito, ball is cleared. Very brave act.
1:42 Handball recieve from Harris, handballs back to Harris.
0:09 Attempts mark from three deep from poor Thomas kick at F50 hot spot. Good effort.

2nd quarter.

19:34 Gives away free in marking duel with Bowden. A very poor umpiring decision.
16:35 Picks up loose ball behind centre, cuts through three Richmond players and spears a beautiful 20 metre handpass to free Campbell. Resulting forward thrust results in Grant goal.
13:41 Tackles Polo and stymies Richmond advance in D50, ball is cleared.
13:13 Marks Harvey pass forward of centre circle, long kick to F50 hot spot results in Thompson mark and goal.
4:06 Recieves Power (?) handball in D50 and clears with a long kick to the wing.
1:49 Recieves Firrito handball, kicks to Hale at half forward.

To this point his loose opponent, the dangerous Bowden, has had no effect on the contest.

3rd quarter

18:18 Tackles Tuck resulting spillage is picked up by Harding > Campbell > Thompson > Goal.
17:05 Pounces on loose ball and Kick clears D50.
15:07 Tackles Bowden.
14:22 Punches ball clear of marking contest, swoops on spillage, hanballs to Petrie, then shepherds a clear path for Petrie.
1:01 Recieves handball from Gibson and handballs on to Power.
0:07 Recieves handball from Grant and handballs on to Power.

4th quarter

18:34 Swoops on loose ball and handballs to McIntosh.
18:07 Backs into pack in D50 hot spot, spillage cleared by Petrie.
17:42 Recieves handball from McIntosh and handballs on to Simpson.
15:22 Recieves handball from Campbell and handballs on to Thomas.
13:56 Recieves handball from Simpson and kicks long to F50 hot spot.
9:00 Tackles Jackson.
2:59 Recieves handball from Harris and kicks long to F50 hot spot.

All in all a decent game from a bloke that played a kick behind the play. He only really went missing in the third quarter but did spend time off the ground in that period.

All I remember is I saw him contributing to stopping 2 and setting up 3.

Really? Can you specify these goals he created and stopped?

My mistake, I rated one of his D50 efforts that was actually cleared by Firrito. On the other hand I found another Goal contribution. Stopped 1, set up 4.

What chance would you guys give of Scott D.Thompson coming back into the team? I thought he had a pretty good game against us in Round 1 and was surprised to see that he was dropped from the side.

Well said. That is fact.:thumbsu:

I think the same could be said of Hale in regards to his ability to contest. My point is that Brown was given a kick up the arse last finals series. Dropped. Has worked hard this preseason. Gained a spot in the Senior Line Up. You may not think he earnt it but Laidley did. Played Well but people now want him dropped. Now that is Madness. Which was the last guy who had 19 touches in a match get dropped the following week?

Funnily enough, as it stands now - he should lose his spot based on type. Well that is your opinion. IMO it is when he plays badly that he should be dropped.

Why didn't any of these 3 guys get a game last week? O.K. is Smith coming back from injury and you may had him in mind but who are the 3 and if they weren't injured why didn't Dean Laidley play them instead of Brown?

Alchohol has dimmed my memory of the evening, but didn't Ed Lower tag Sam Mitchell is the semi-final last year? If so, he might be a show this week after all.

Simpson had him in the first quarter, Lower had him after that. But either way the kid smashed him. But Ed missed a lot of the pre season and due to suspension hasn't been able to prove his fitness in the two's. Would still be a few weeks away I'd imagine.

I'd only make one change this week.

IN - Smith
OUT - Watt (and Hale put on notice)

Can't keep rewarding pitiful displays when there are young guys putting genuine pressure on.

B-Pratt, Gibson, Firrito
HB-Power, Petrie, Harding
C-Wells, Harris, Smith
HF-Jones, Hale, Edwards
F-Grant, Thompson, Campbell
R-McIntosh, Rawlings, Harvey
INT-Simpson, Brown, Thomas, Swallow

No chance he will drop Watt for this game. I reckon he will get first crack at Boyle, and I reckon Laidley might start Petrie at CHF to attempt to stretch them.

Hope not.

We can stretch them anyway, and Boyle is tailor made for Petrie.

Maybe.

Last week Petrie took Cleve Hughes (who is rubbish), who was doing his upmost (on instruction) to drag Drew from the corridor and Richo. It worked, too. What we did was get Drew to move up-field in posession, and Hughes getting lost in transition. Laidley did this very well.

This week, Spud on Roughead is a certainty, as is Gibson on Franklin. I hope we don't play Petrie loose in defence, but he just might go that way, giving Watt the job on Boyle (who is good at his job and a very smart forward).

I had Petrie earmarked for Boyle, and he'd beat him too. We can stretch them anyway IMO. Don't rate their defence at the best of times and this week it'll be without Croad as well. Watt needs to go back and find some form. At present he'd struggle to beat me.
