Good news for Nick smith. No shock there. Roos loves to throw debutants into games against benchmark sides. And Geelong are certainly that right now.

Not surprised to see Brennan dropped, either, it has to be said. Brennan's clangers were appalling last week. Perhaps we've found our next Rowan Warfe? But I have hopes for him. So he may come back in when we're playing dry-weather footy on a larger ground?

Also on #40+ debutants we've had, I may be wrong but didn't Adam Goodes start with the number 41 as well?

Does it really matter whether he's in for Thornton or Meredith? Either way, it means that at the moment there's another spot if any of the rookies shows a bit.

I'm not sure on what the rules are for the de-elevating a rookie either. If he's in for Meredith, he will automatically be de-elevated once Meredith is ready to resume which, if you go by the injury lists, will be in a couple of months.

If he's come in for Thornton, does that mean he has to stay up for the rest of the season? It will only be an issue if someone else emerges later in the season that they want to give a game to. Thornton's spot will be available all year, whereas hopefully Meredith's won't.

Yes he will. He missed the game against Geelong because he pulled up sore on Thursday training so Paul Roos decided to rest him as a precaution.

just off wires:
kennelly expected back, moore twinged hammy late against cats but expected back
smith to get another run
everitt in contention for seniors
playfair likely to play seconds
malceski back to full training next week, tipped for round 8 or 9 comeback
this is from interview with roos

Our Round 9 team will look very different to the team we have seen in Rounds 1 through 5.

I see Shmidt is due back this week. What do you guys think about his chances of breaking into the team, and when?

I think, if he is indeed fit this week he should play ressies, then come back in for Bevan or Bird for the home game against the Dogs.

Drove past the SCG today and saw Tadhg just doing some stretches (for the hammy) by himself with a few of the doctors. He looked pretty good :thumbsu:
