Also see quote from Herald Sun backing my view of some generous decisions from the umpies helped as follows. As a matter fo fairness I leave in the bit where Gieschen backs the Mcguane decision;
  • THE AFL umpiring department has conceded Richmond copped a raw deal with the contentious 50m penalty against Daniel Jackson on Saturday.
Jackson was penalised under the new rule designed to deter players from slinging an opponent to the ground after he disposes of the ball. The penalty cost the Tigers a goal.
But after viewing all footage, including from behind the goals, AFL umpiring boss Jeff Gieschen has confirmed the tackle on Geelong's Joel Corey should have been penalised by a free kick only.
The Jackson decision brought the rule sharply into focus because Richmond had momentum in the third quarter and the resulting goal to Corey was a savage blow.

Gieschen confirmed he had spoken to Richmond coach Terry Wallace on the issue on Sunday and again on Monday.
"I guess Richmond would certainly feel aggrieved that the 50m penalty was applied," Gieschen said.
"It is not a free kick and 50 because it wasn't a tackle or sling to the ground after he got rid of the ball.
"It was a secondary action. It should have been a free kick where Jackson and Corey were or where the ball was, whatever was the greatest advantage to Geelong.
"Most people thought the decision was for the initial tackle. It wasn't for that.
"The tackle was fine, Corey got rid of the ball and the umpire called play-on.
"About three seconds after the ball had left Corey's hands, you hear the whistle go again.
"Other footage behind the goals showed Jackson on top of Corey pinning him to the ground, not letting him go. As it is a secondary action, a free kick only should have been paid."
Richmond has conceded five goals from 50m penalties this year, more than any other club.
Gieschen backed the decision to penalise Tiger Luke McGuane for time-wasting when he punched the ball away after Cameron Mooney had kicked a goal, costing another third-quarter goal.

So what I was actually saying was we were a bit lucky to win it.

Just because the decision was wrong, doesn't mean we were lucky to win it. And the fact is, if McGuane hadn't punched the ball away, there'd be nothing to sook about.

We dominated the game early and controlled it late when we needed to. We did what we had to in order to win.

Don't forget, Richmond had 10 more frees overall, too. It's not like Geelong had a dream run from the umpires.

If that's the correct interpretation then the new rule is incomplete. The idea of the law is to prevent defending teams taking out a player after he has disposed of the ball to prevent him being involved in the next play. Zone defences rely on it to prevent teams getting an extra man on them. What does it matter if it's a first or second movement? The penalty should be the same. 50 metres.

That would be bloody stupid, especially assuming Fraser is playing. A mobile ruckman will run Blake off his legs, and I'd rather not see Moons pinch-hitting in the ruck again because Blake is stuffed.

first it was channel 10 and second it was a post from monday...trent west will come in for ottens no doubt.

Bomber saying there will be multiple changes, and that the 22 they name tonight will almost certainly change come game time.

Any guesses on the ins/outs Vegas?
Your guess is as good as mine, but I'm thinking West, Stokes as a definite in's. Ottens the obvious out, perhaps Hogan makes way for Stokes, and I would think there might be another swap in there for a player who is a bit sore.

Great news is that Harley could be playing AFL as early as next week.

Oh for a Mitch Morton type forward at Geelong,

Ryan Gamble is a Mitch Morton type forward.

If we wanted Varcoe to get 25+ possessions a game, we'd play him in the midfield.

If we wanted Varcoe to get 25+ possessions a game, we'd pick Byrnes instead.

Yeah,i agree with the West/Stokes in for Ottens/Hogan, they seem to be the obvious choices providing Stokes is fit. That interview with Bomber left me wondering who the other players were that were "sore" and might not play.? I was thinking Rooke, but Bomber sounded like he would be good to go.

Trio return for Cats
4:41 PM Wed 08 April, 2009

Geelong has welcomed back Trent West, Mathew Stokes and Shannon Byrnes for its clash with Collingwood on Easter Thursday at the MCG.

Stokes missed last weekend’s win over Richmond with general soreness, while Byrnes has been an emergency over the opening two rounds and has played well at VFL level.

West comes in for injured ruckman Brad Ottens. West played six games in 2008 when Ottens was also injured and he also played three NAB Cup matches during this year’s pre season.

Debutante Simon Hogan will miss after pulling up sore and Ryan Gamble will go back to the VFL.

Geelong vs. Collingwood:

B: Andrew Mackie – Matthew Scarlett – Darren Milburn
HB: Joel Corey – Harry Taylor – Max Rooke
C: Jimmy Bartel – Corey Enright – Cameron Ling
HF: James Kelly – Cameron Mooney – Mathew Stokes
F: Paul Chapman – Tom Hawkins – Steve Johnson
Foll: Mark Blake – Joel Selwood – Gary Ablett
Int: Trent West, Shannon Byrnes, Travis Varcoe, David Wojcinski
Emerg: Ryan Gamble, David Johnson, Tom Lonergan

IN:Byrnes, Stokes and West
OUT: Ottens, Gamble and Hogan (sore)

We will need the speed of Byrnes
THe coaching staff know the players the best and they see the capacity to add a dimension which is lacking in the existing team
His kicking for goal is not much different to our other forwards at the moment

Ryan Gamble? This absolute staggers me. I for the life of me cant work why they don't like him.

Surely they must understand that a tight game at Skilled Stadium is not the place for a lead up forward.

Must be a late change coming surely?

the team is at around 50%, shannon is at around 30% for his career.

gamble could have been omitted due to the fact that he kept trying to take speccies.

I would hope so.

Another option might be:

Bomber: "Ryan, stop trying to take speccies".
Nah, that means Shannon doesn't get yet another game to miss goals from 40m out on the run, which is an undervalued asset to our side and makes us play better.

Well given the fact that Gamble, Hawkins, Mooney, Rooke and Lonergan can't make set shots from 10m, we may as well have shannon streaming off the flank missing them from 40 :)

Nah, Byrnes will be ok for the Collingwood game...he is not the best player, sure, but he is a goer and does position himself relatively well within our structures. Considering the emphasis on forward 50 pressure at the moment, he could be a smart inclusion. Don't agree with Gamble being dropped, but he does need a firecracker up his arse and shouldn't assume he is an automatic inclusion.

Would be nice to see Hogan get two in a row though.

However, im willing to back bomber in, he hasn't done a bad job over the last 47 games now has he!

Hey Ricketts, these team selections are making me feel ill, those guys have got no imagination at all, I think there's a conspiracy happening or something.
Sad to see them drop Gamble, if I was him I'd start talking to Hawthorn.
