Matera was a skinny kid when he first started, but he was far from that type of body when he ran rampant in their two premierships.Big strong and quick. But the game was played differently back then as well.Runners like Matera were given space to do that. The game is much more cramped and in close now days.

Matera wasn't drafted as an 18yo though. He was about 20yo and had played about 50 games of WAFL including finals before being drafted. He also played some reserves WAFL.

By who? also, I think I laid the issue out pretty well. It would be a lot easier to believe he got the job on merit alone if there were some other worthy candidates he beat out for the job.

edit - found one sorry my mistake

COLLINGWOOD chiefs have declared assistant coach Justin Longmuir capable of causing a boilover in the Fremantle coaching race.
The Magpies have thrown their full support behind the assistant, whose two-year reign as backline coach has won high acclaim at the club.

Longmuir, 38, will present to the Dockers' selection panel this week on the back of a strong recommendation from Magpies coach Nathan Buckley.

Collingwood chief of football Geoff Walsh said Longmuir's impressive turn in control of the team's NAB Cup campaign had convinced it he was ready to become a senior coach.

"He handled that responsibility during the pre-season extremely well, endorsing our opinion that he is a very strong senior coaching candidate," Walsh said.

"We are delighted with the way he has progressed, and he would be the first to admit the AFL environment has really allowed him to blossom.

"Players appreciate his honesty and the way he can deliver a constructive message."

The club credited Longmuir for a major role in the improvement of its backline, which includes four - Simon Prestigiacomo, Nick Maxwell, Harry O'Brien and Heath Shaw - in the All-Australian mix.

just in case anyone missed my hilarious joke

Apologies in advance. SC question incoming.
Has Luke Ryan's role changed under Longmuir?

Yeah out of necessity so far, this week he will be very defense-minded so son't expect any +6s. He has another gear for sure but I don't think we will get our tall defenders back this season so he'll probably be more of a stopper this season.

Maybe the selection choices for tomorrow are the unveiling of some form of coaching wizardry Longmuir has conjured. It'll be interesting to see where it fits on the spectrum of genius-foolishness.

So (without the whining and gnashing of teeth) is Hughes (188cm, 89kg) better suited to going to King (200cm, 87kg) or Day (197cm, 104kg)?

We are going to have to have maximum pressure on the ball carrier when they go forward so the entry is a hit and hope. I suggest 7 backs as at every high ball we will need one defender edging out the forward and one either killing the contest or marking. If theres no third man up it will be a rout.

With lobb in the ruck I would swing leukosis forward if I was gcs. No real need for a third tall at the back today. Will stretch us even further.
worried a little about sexton as well. Continues the tradition of c graders performing well against us

I think just due to the sheer size of King, he’d be better off going to Day

Blakely played in the scratch match this morning so he isn’t the one being held over. Probably will be Duman.
Anthony Rock said he played well and should force his way in soon.

Sounds like we might have been beaten convincingly in the scratch match. Corbett kicked 4 in the first half for the suns which highlights our complete lack of Key back depth.
Hopefully Freo provide a summary soon but judging from the GC report, their midfield of Smith, Fiorini, Brodie, Murdock, Sharp were too good.
