Varcoe hasn't put up a performance worthy of keeping his spot for in any game this year. It was the same for most of last year, too.

Unfortunately, he appears to be done. He is an outside player but has poor football intelligence and continually runs to the wrong spots. It's frustrating that such a talented user can't put himself into positions to get the ball and cause damage.

I get that he adds something with his chasing because it creates perceived pressure, but his actual performance are next to always poor. In fact, he's rarely not in our worst three players and that isn't good enough. He's a senior player who needs to perform to set an example, but he rarely does.

If we were to continue to pick him despite his poor performances, it would send the wrong message. I for one am very happy we've moved to a merits based approach with selections.

Why do that? It's buried Maggies brilliant OP and preview thread in the mess that is the changes thread. I hate trying to discuss the upcoming game in the changes thread because 9 out of 10 posts are about changes (drop Varcoe, dont drop Varcoe etc et ). Our preview content is the worst by a fair way on BigFooty. Go look at the previews on Essendon board by comparison. We used to get DaVe86s previews and it was great. Our preview content is really poor and when someone goes to some effort it gets merged into the weekday equivalent of the matchday thread.

Interesting to see how we combat changes in the ruck without Cox giving Grundy a chop out. Does Reid go back and Roughy into the ruck? Or does Reid ruck?

Lycett and Ryder could really get on top of us on the changeover

On the first line of your post, I suggest you revisit the game against the Dogs.

Fair enough, its sad to me because Varcoe seems to have a span of 90 seconds in each match where he does something magical. That incredible over the head handball a few weeks ago comes to mind.

I just wish he could provide that for minutes on end instead of flashes in the pan. He’s a fun player to watch but that doesn’t always help win football games.

I'm of the belief that we don't get enough pre-match discussion regarding games (match ups, etc) because people feel they're only supposed to talk about changes. We don't need two threads.

Roughead spent plenty of pre-season training in the ruck against Max Lynch. They won't play a fragile Moore there.
As noted, Howe and Langdon can play tall for 5 mins a quarter.

With Charlie Dixon still out, we can afford this better albeit they have a resting Ryder/Lycett to counter.

Don't like Varcoe being dropped. Port are a pressure team and need it to be applied back to them. Brown, Stephenson, Thomas don't apply much tackling pressure. I really can't see why they didn't drop Brown.
 
Just finished watching the Essendon game again..........not sure how Thomas survived over Varcoe this week IMO.

Watching Varcoe not take a backward step against Hooker who tried to be “tough” was brilliant.

Perhaps. It would be nice to see some effort in the OP for the preview. Maggies thread was the best we've had in a long time. Now its stuck somewhere in the middle of this thread.

When the stadium is filled quite a bit, it’s ok.
I don’t park there, as it’s a maze to find your car and it’s a real rip off.

That said the viewing is pretty good - and great when you’re winning :)

Plus the changes thread generally goes up just after the final siren has sounded on the previous game meaning the initial page or two... are posted in the heat of the moment. If there has to be just one thread I'd rather the initial changes thread is used as a place holder until a proper review such Maggie5's great write up is posted a few days after the heat has gone out of the previous match.

Yep - pretty much this.
 
This season I th I we’ve only used 25 players, ie only 3 additions to the initial 22.
That’s not a lot.
With Reid it will go to 26.

The player I’d be thinking would be particularly worried is Goldsack.
Not getting a sniff.

It's a real shame about the preview content. It used to be so good. The content around training, VFL reports and draft stuff (which was always good on our board but has gotten better) have all improved. Get the preview content strong again and our little forum would be hard to beat.
 
I’m quietly confident that we can see off Port this week. We are a very resilient outfit and don’t seem to get rattled whatever is thrown at us regardless of the ins and outs. However every match I’m a nervous wreck when the clock ticks past 5 minutes to go each quarter.
Can’t find any stats relating to red time goals conceded. Are we poor in this area compared to others or am I just over anxious?
 
Varcoe's value is grossly underestimated. The thing that he does (other than the tackling) that few others do is run to the spillage position at full pace, so that if the ball goes there, he is placed to do something really positive. It is the nature of such running that our oval ball often goes slightly elsewhere. The conservative player gets it more often, but can't do so much with it. I firmly believe that we need this characteristic in our team, and it is worth accepting the times the ball bounces away for the times when he gets it at pace and can really do damage. I am sorry he is the one to miss out, but somebody had to for Elliott.
Cox had to be replaced by another tall player. Reid does not provide the difference that Cox does, but he is no mug either.
