How about backing the young guy in instead of just continued negativity. I for one am looking forward to seeing Dante again
I truly hope he comes out and has 25+ hitouts, gets involved around the ground and takes some grabs. It's just a lot to ask of a second gamer in his second season against a mature aged ruckman is all. In a showdown of all games.

Go well son, give 'em the big D.

If you were a supporter of another club and you knew nothing about Sam Hayes' actual ability but knew that his coach had played Brynn Teakle or even no ruck at all ahead of him, would you want your club to trade for him?

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. His value has been tanked because of the way we've treated him.

There's not a list manager in Australia who's not aware of who Sam is and what he brings to the table.

Hopefully this AC injury is only minor and he at least gets a chance to push his case for a run elsewhere next season though a good sanfl finals series.

There's no shortage of AFL sides looking for a decent ruck or even a solid back up option.
If there is a club that rates him at all he gets a shot elsewhere.

Port have paid Sam maybe close to a million dollars in the time he's been here?

He doesn't have much to complain about.

Pretty funny how we’ve become the “oh he may be young/old/small but we know one thing he will give it his best effort club” ala the kane mitchell nathan blee sam gray matt thomas hard worker types that are in reality s**t balls AFL players. Dante falls into the same category.

And the last time multiple people said “its fine we should beat this mob regardless” it was a 50 point loss to carlton where silvagni and motlop kicked 4+ each. Crouch Laird and Sloane easy finals bound revival for the crows

Also Narkle seemed to coast during the sanfl game last week not surprising he didnt get the call up. Hugh Jackson has put together a solid last few months

Yes, except of course they were all mature age players with double digit games under their belt.

This guy is a second game, second year ruckman.

I reckon Dante will probably get belted in the ruck but what is the other option right now, for this week? Lycett isn't right and everyone was calling for him to be dropped. We did that. We need to replace him. Hayes is injured. We know what Teakle offers (not much, and he's coming off an injury). We know that Finlayson / Dixon isn't sustainable for a whole game (and this could be multiple games) and robs the forward line too much. So what other choices do we have?

Sure, you're absolutely right if you argue we should've seen this coming and gotten games into Hayes, recruited better backups, whatever. But without the existence of a time machine, how is this a meltworthy selection this weekend?

I reckon Teakle would be playing if he'd had more than one game back in the SANFL, he'll probably be in the selection frame from next week onwards with the ongoing management of Lycett.

Maybe, but recruiters make their own decisions for what their club needs. Every year theres a underused player who gets a regular opportunity at a new club. Oppo recruiters would have had a look at our SANFL team this year particularly while we were sitting second on the ladder as theyd know we'd have talent who would be finding it hard to make it into the A's. He's been up for grabs for a couple of years and noone has wanted him.

Heard from someone who used to work at Port is that the pervading view on Hayes is that he doesn't have the tank and is lazy. Just what I was told.
It would be nice if somebody at the club ever actually judged players on what they did rather than their personalities.

If Hayes doesn't have a tank and is lazy, and Teakle is a hard worker, and yet Hayes still clearly and consistently outperforms Teakle, it's clear who the more talented one worth working with and persisting with is, isn't it? Or alternatively we could just palm Chad Wingard off for two guys who have been in and out of our team the last few years because he likes video games more than training.

I reckon Hayes has a better chance of making it onto another afl list then say Frampton. The fact that we have handicapped ourselves all season by refusing to rest Lycett and play Hayes is just dumb list/ player management.

The fact that we have the most talented, potent, dynamic & offensive midfield we have seen in our afl times, yet refuse to give our best tap ruckman a game, is terrible list management anyway you cut it.
Imagine going into a finals series and seriously considering playing teakle or Dante is a joke.

Phillips is 201/103 so a tiny bit smaller than ROB and (although Dante was a late call up) absolutely monstered Dante.

ROB is a far better ruck than Phillips too so hopefully it isn’t a repeat performance.
It was quite wet which takes away some of Dantes weapons though.

What's the weather like on Sat night

Him repeatedly going to soccer off the ground instead of pick up loose balls is a canary in the coalmine. Either his agility’s going, or McGovern rattling his ribcage has made him reluctant to invite contact, or both.

As per my reference a few weeks ago, if you watch vision of Marc Murphy’s final season, he was doing the exact same thing.

Anyone can come in and hack the ball or fresh-airy off the deck, if that’s what you’re bringing to the table.

Hopefully it is just related to his battered torso and there’s still enough juice left in the orange to keep going with rest, or we might see a redux of the mid-season ‘gone to live on a farm with Dom’ manoeuvre.
I think it's the multiple knees to the back he's had, including twice against Carlton.

Last few games in the wet as well where soccering off the floor is expected.

I might be a minority but I reckon ROB was likely to towel up Lycett or Hayes, if either were fit, anyway. He often kills us with intercept marking and his work around the ground.

I'm hoping a large part of Dante's performance in his last game was due to the late call-up and he's better able to compete tomorrow.

Late call up didn’t seem to affect Motlop. But agree otherwise, Rob has destroyed Lycett before on multiple occasions, Rob would towel up Hayes too I expect.
If Rob isn’t best on ground v Dante it will be a victory of sorts.

Not worried about it, like it or not Teakle needs some games before finals with Lycett's issues.
Teakle needs more than some games, he needs 2-3 seasons of preparation and a team of specialists working 24/7 on him to have any chance of even making it as an average afl player.
What an absurd situation to be hoping teakle is fit for finals. We may as well tank for draft picks if teakle is one of our finals ruck options.

It's nothing to do with me rating him, he's the most mature body we have backing up Lycett.

They are not picking Hayes again, Dante is a kid & Lycett is a week to week proposition.

Dixon is peglegged out of significant ruck time come finals & Finlayson isn't any more than a chop out either.

I was more than surprised at the upper body size and strength of O'brien against Max Gawn, so if Dante wants to be the inferno I expect him to become he will need to use his athleticism wisely, as getting involved in arm wrestles and bodying up against the much stronger bloke will almost always result in in a win to him.
