Stating the bleeding obvious - Snake: 10/10
Modesty - Snake: 0/10.

...............and yet "the bleeding obvious" appears to be in VERY short supply around here.

As I said, earlier - if Rhys has gone to him and said "Nathan, 50 per cent of your game was elite, the numbers back it up, but you weren't hard enough in this, this, this contest, you're in next week and I expect you to deliver that same elite level of ball delivery but if you don't go hard when its your turn, then back to the twoies for you" the I am 100 per cent fine with that approach.

What if right, Rhys actually develops Hrovat into a top notch player. Bloke was a relatively early pick (21/22 from memory) and there's no doubting his skills or his pace.

Build his confidence, put him as part of a forward unit that loves cracking in, and hey, if he starts cracking in too, we've got a real player here.
[/QUOTE”no doubting his skill and pace” ! Really, I’ve yet to see either. Sorry but he would not get a game in most sides.

Jamie Macmillan has been a slightly better than average 1v1 defender at AFL level for his entire career and remains so.

Scott Thompson is no longer a good AFL defender.

Shaun Atley is not a particularly good defender but has become a relatively dependable user of the ball at either end.

I’ve defended Luke McDonald here in the depths of his whipping boy days but the fact that He has recovered all the way back to mostly competent is a pretty damning indictment of how bad it had gotten. Have people started reclassifying his goofy grins as grimaces and are now convinced he’s trying?

Majak made his mark as an interceptor rather than strictly man-on-man defender and there’s not enough sample size to draw any conclusions.

People find this hard to believe I know, but Jamie Macmillan gets picked because he’s a good footballer. He’s better than McDonald, Wright, Murphy, Crocker, Watson, and statistically almost indistinguishable from Jasper Pittard.

how exactly is thompson no longer a good afl defender? Other than a slight drop off in early 2017 (and then found form again in the second half of the year) he's kept the same form as he ever has over his career....

He’s cooked. Papering over the cracks with cheap rebounds.

Gees I think we've all had our fill of selection whinging. Let Shaw coach as he needs to know what he can extract for each player.

Let's be unbiased here. Based on last week's game those ins and outs are spot on. Forget JMac and Hrovat under the former coach, we need to give them a chance. I'm not rapt that JMac kept his spot but I get it.

Forget who's out, we have some massive ins and I reckon we will hit the Lions hard and I'm tipping a win. We seem to lift for qualify teams.

How does that happen?

Bailey is out for the year with a foot injury
Garner is on a club imposed ban for drinking
Tyson is out with a calf
And you want to throw the rest of the kids in without any senior support? We aren't Carlton mate.

we are not playing finals, so finishing 9th would have the exact same effect as finishing last with the latter being a higher draft pick. We are not playing finals, so we should strategically blood games into some of the players. Carlton is cellar dweller because they cant help it, we can be more tactical.

Unless Teague lights a fire under their arses at least.

So you wont be disappointed if we lose this week.

Our mentality is to win every single game

If we lose in the right manner in that we put experience into the youngsters and let them a taste of some early success, their personal gain. Winning at this state will not add to the existing experienced players. The senior players will not gain anything new by being in the side but can get an injury or two that could end their careers. Ziebell, Cunnington are both 28 so hardly youngsters, they are 1 injury from the end of career. But this is absolutely good time to get some leadership experience into Anderson, get the 2 key back position responsibility to the long term successors in durdin and mackay. Thompson is finished as he is not going to get better and we still have Daw coming back. Tarrant needs rest and we want to prolong his career. Playing out the last few games will not add to his skill level but can go absolutely wrong with a leg injury or 2 that could end his career. A lot to lose by playing the existing team. If we can play the kids and compete hard and lose due to lack of match fitness and experience.

Are you at all familiar with the term 'winning culture'?

Some (like my good self) believe it does far more to further development than chucking a bunch of inexperienced players in at the deep end and have them get flogged every week.

And wtf with the injury stuff? It's football. There are never any guaranteed outcomes with regards to the projection and occurence of future injuries.

Terrible post.

I know people who prefer Crocker getting a crack but it's quite the AFL introduction.

Crock is showing a lot but the poor kid's balls have barely dropped and he's only just getting a season playing against men under his belt, putting him out there would set him back six months.

I know every player’s not the same. However, after the Taylor (4.4 in VFL the week before) experience against the Bombers, I’m sure Shaw is erring on the side of conservatism with regard to Crocker. Every game from here on in is more or less a final. If Taylor hadn’t been in the team last week, we’d be firmly knocking on the door of the eighth right now. That’s not meant as a knock on Taylor. I’m just pointing out the risks of bringing in raw recruits, especially when the team has already been injury-hit (Wood/Higgins). The Ahern inclusion instead of LDU was already a risk - of sorts.

Agreed. Putting Crock in now would be stupid.

Depends on the opposition.

I'd have no problem giving him a debut v Hawthorn in the 150th match, but I agree that he needs a bit more size.

Don't worry about his decision making though, he's as forward in that department as any kid I have seen arrive at our club in the past decade. He's VERY smart.

So Clarko can get McEvoy to clean him up in a marking contest?

I recall Clarko being interviewed the week after their last loss and it being put to him that a lower position may be of benefit for draft positioning heading into 2020, to which he replied “no, winning culture is the most important goal for the rest of 2019 if we’re to miss out on finals, and that will be our number one goal.

Tanking is for the tip!

winning culture kinda have to start in rd 1.............

winning culture towards the end of the season is strategically stupid as it does nothing for our club. The players who don't want to come over to our clubs have already made up their mind from r1 to 9. We are preparing for r1 2020 with an eye towards the future. We need to start getting the long term replacement for thompson into action. Goldstein's replacement will also need some game time as we should be sending him to st kilda. Also let the youngsters take the rein in the middle with anderson given leadership opportunity.
