Do extremely talented players often learn playing against weaker opposition?

He's playing an incredibly difficult role at AFL level in our team and while he's not going amazingly he clearly outperformed Murphy today
Of course footballers learn in the reserves.

You don't improve by osmosis - if he's unable to do much in the As, he's not going to be able to get better at it.

He needs reps and getting his hands on the ball.

If the Crows don't play Crouch this week, they should let him have the rest of year off.

Just come out and say it doesn't matter how he plays. We've decided our team balance is so shot we can't find a way to include him.

I'm happy to nominate every player in the AFL. I can't think of a single player who hasn't spent time in the reserves especially when young and new. Even the great G Abblett jnr played about 15 reserves games in his first season. Jimmy Bartell too actually. Their Browlow medals prove they had talent but it seems their coaches recognised they needed some "practice" before playing at senior level.
Absolutely. Dawson spent 50 games in the twos before getting an opportunity, and it allowed him to develop.

This board gets so fixated on giving golden tickets to their favourites that they will ignore logic.

Why should they play him? They obviously don't think he helps our AFL side and that's why he was dropped twice. Keep playing him in the SANFL and another AFL team might be willing to take him off our hands.

Why stop at the SANFL? If it's just a question of getting reps, why not the ammos? He'd probably get tones of kicks if we got him into kids football?

McPherson has been very very good in the SANFL - probably our best true midsized defender. He should be getting serious consideration.
Yep, bring him in to replace Jones. The back pocket experiment is over.

Once Mcpherson gets going in a season he is generally pretty good but boy did he start this year poorly.

Dawson was a third round pick drafted to a team with premiership credentials who had a performance uptick after five seasons on a list.

Rachelle is an elite position draft pick in a team with no finals prospects who has already performed at AFL level. Anyone who thinks they ought be treated the same should not be claiming logic is their friend.

Why would Josh accept it, for starters?

Rather than making excuses for them, why don't we make the coaches responsible for ensuring that young players in our team are used in ways that do not destroy their confidence?

Bring cook in for the rest of the year, * trying to make him put in efforts like Glenn Archer, he’ll never be that.
He needs to be playing AFL, that’s where he’ll learn what he needs to do and get used to the speed of the game.
Sick of us working on players weakness’s and not playing them for their strengths.

How do you explain pretty much every other young players in history ALSO learning in the reserves?

What other task in life are you meant to get better at by immediately doing it at the hardest possible setting?

OF COURSE he's better off improving at certain things by practicing at a lower level.

FFS, this board ... What role should we play him in? He's playing the role HE PLAYED THROUGH HIS ENTIRE JUNIOR CAREER. He's just a kid, ffs - give him a chance to improve without embarrassing him against the best players in the country.

I don't need to explain your theory, you need to prove it.

If you claim that being in the reserves is why players develop, as opposed to that their development can on occasion correlate with being there, prove that. We have tonnes of players who have not developed by being left to languish in the twos.

If all that is needed is lower level practice and 'reps', why play the SANFL? Why not an even lower level?

Rachele has been a joke for 10 weeks and never played a SANFL game. It’s time.

Still averaging as many touches as McHenry and Murphy? Has kicked twice as many goals as they have combined - hitting the scoreboard each week

Last two have been quieter and definitely has faded since first month. Apparently when you “play the kids” and “stick with them” there are plenty of downs with the ups. He just had a freshen up - he is our most talented draftee. Let’s get games into him

I don't think this is true though. There are lots of examples of elite high draft picks never playing reserves (or maybe 1 game in their entire career), especially if they aren't a KPP and even when they are out of form

Club bag carriers are amazing really.

They claim we should have no expectations on us now because of how awful we are, but also will argue on each point that we don't need to change anything about our approach which led to us being so damn awful.

Right all of the time, and still one of the worst clubs in the league. Can you believe that luck?

out:

murphy - forever.
rachele - just needs to go back to the seconds and find some football and build some confidence and form again.
fog - that finger looked bad.. you’d think he got a needle and strapping but come tomorrow his whole hand will be a balloon.. might lose him for a week or two.

mcasey in place of fog. mcasey is one of the clubs best contested grabs at the moment.

there is literally nothing whatsoever to lose from making these changes..

Would like to see it

Is this your opinion or is there some proof you might like to cite? I couldn't disagree with your comment more strongly.

We have had plenty of players develop in the Sanfl prior to playing good AFL footy. Even this year I would suggest Berry getting to be the number one mid fielder for 2-3 weeks in a row rather than number 3-4 in the AFL team helped him immensely. Same could be said of Hateley getting to play inside mid earlier this year

Gollant is developing. Nankervis is - no way you could throw him in an AFL team. Parnell etc

Lots of examples

Both of these examples are from simply playing players in their preferred position, not from playing SANFL.

I'd even argue that Berry has developed faster and become better from specifically playing AFL instead of SANFL

These are all lower picks though, one would suggest higher picks have show something more/ have a better developed game.

Smaller, slightly built players will need SANFL time early in their careers

Key position players will often need SANFL time early in their careers

Young players will need rests and/or circuit breakers at times

Strategic, planned temporary use of our reserves team is smart.

Too often we aren't smart with it though.

Simply see it as we're losing; punishment

Why should we do that, he can just play in the 2s like everyone else until he gets selected. Why does he need special treatment, are you worried about his ego?
