I just remembered this article, but to be fair it doesn’t actually feature a direct quote from anyone at the club, so that Turner guy probably pulled the McAsey reference out of his arse and I’m just jumping at shadows

Pretty simple really, if they are concerned about his development don't stick him at centre half back on gorillas. There are multiple positions across the ground he can be damaging - but of course we are to black and white like that.

Nicks needs to send a strong message.

I've thought Smith shouldn't have played for a couple of years now, he needs to go.

Put Nankervis or Ryan in, out Smith.

From AFC, February 2024:
"
Again led by Captain Jordan Dawson who was crowned Club Champion and All Australian in his first year in the role, the group will include three Vice-Captains in Brodie Smith, Ben Keays and Reilly O’Brien.

The four additions to an expanded leadership model for this season are forwards Darcy Fogarty and Lachlan Murphy and defenders Wayne Milera and Mitch Hinge".
The latter 4 are afterthoughts, neither leaders nor inspirational (imo).
Smith, will not be dropped.
Murphy, will not be dropped.
There are "non-leaders" eg Sholl and Gollant who'll get the boot before them.

From the Burns presser today

Keane not playing was a match fitness thing, hopefully that means hes up for selection this week.
Similar with Soligo, they considered his very limited minutes in the pre season games. Hopefully now with that convincing quarter of football hes up for selection in a starting spot.
Tex is on track to play so far.
Sounds like they are overthinking things and trying to be too tricky. Just pick the best team regardless of whether a player is underdone or not. An underdone Soligo(which i doubt is the case) is better than at least 10 players in last weeks team that were 100% fit. As usual Nicks places too much faith in presesson training form instead of match history from previous years. Sholl is a prime example.

The only lesson from McAsey should be around poor recruiting decisions.

Good to have Tex back. Hard game for forwards last week, but would like to see Gollant given an extended chance in the side with Thilthorpe out, so I'd pick him to stay in the side instead of Burgess.

Soligo in to the starting 22 instead.

Sholl out for the specialist sub, McHenry.

A pity the SANFL season starts so late. Would be good to see some early season games for those outside the picked team.

Put Smith on the wing, attacking.

He's a front runner these days, but he's still one of our best kicks - our wings aren't strong, let's use him there.
That’s where we used him to end last year, I don’t understand why we haven’t gone back to it. He’s better there than at HBF these days

We have a trial at 4:45 tomorrow against Eagles at Footy Park.
