Pretty sure Vardy is playing to maintain the forward structure, not the rucking structure. He's there to provide a contest, bring the ball down to Ryan and Rioli.

Barrass can do that, and actually mark the ball occasionally aswell. 14 touches, 7 marks vs 4 touches 1 mark last week, Who deserves to hold their spot?

Thats a myth. So many times i have seen Ryan in defence laying some pressure. I actually even saw it last weekend against Perth.

Not a myth... his tackling pressure is low and he is usually rooted forward

He is a talent and his ceiling is high though

Looking forward to Ryan and Rioli causing some trouble for Freo's defence. Hopefully Vardy can have a larger impact. Just hoping for a improvement across the board really. Our mids were well beaten last week. Good opportunity to show we mean business this year.

We are talking about who plays forward. Vardy has 37 goals from 50 games. So I pick him.

so under a goal a game as a fwd....not sure how impressively that sells him as a fwd. More importantly is that Barrass showed he could play up the ground and let Darling play closer to goal (where he's been in the best form of his career), with Vardy he almost HAS to play from the goalsquare and pushes Darling up the ground.

Barrass mostly played in defence, Vardy rucked and played forward. Given we got belted, are we surprised Barrass had more touches? I'm a big fan of Barrass but let's not try and turn him into a forward four weeks from finals.

but did u watch the game? Who looked better up fwd?

It was one match - Vardy went quite well last year when pushed forward and considering he's only been back from injury for a few weeks I'll back Vardy in. From memory think he went okay the week before and last week let's face it the ball didn't get to the forward line too often. How many entries did we have last week into our forward 50? I wouldn't mark anyone's card from last weeks game considering we got belted.

but the whole point is Vardy has to play from the goalsquare, which pushes JD up the ground. Barrass can play that up the ground role, which lets JD play closer to goal, where he was the best player in the comp earlier in the year.

Is Vardy's 5-10 hitouts per game worth upsetting the whole fwd line for?

I noticed most people were talking about Barrass playing forward in the North Melbourne game. To my observation, Barrass was actually playing a contesting/negating role on Daw while Daw was the defensive spare man. Hence Barrass was up in the foward half.

Think this was a big part of it, but he also made a few leads of his own. He wasn't entirely negating closer to goal.

That said, I think it could be a strength of his once he gets some XP in the role. Could do a lot of good to block up a spare man, as well as hurting teams with another strong marking presence in the f50.

Tommy is still relatively young, and will keep developing as a player for a while yet. Having some time spent forward could help him become a better defender. I'm keen to throw him around.

In a b22 scenario I'd prefer Vardy as a forward, ignoring conditions / matchups etc. But if it looks like it's going to be wet this week and they need to drop a tall, hopefully Vardy is a late out with general soreness.

I don't like the squad that has been selected. Once again we have far too many talls and I fear we may get burnt because of it.

I would have preferred:
IN: Shuey, Jetta, Ah Chee, Ryan
OUT: Vardy, Waterman, Petruccelle, one of Schofield/Barrass

If Lycett can't play lone ruck against Darcy, then why bother keeping him at all really.

Ah Chee is more than capable of playing a false CHF and has understudied the ruck at both Port Adelaide and East Perth.

Barrass went forward in the 4th quarter in a game a couple of years ago for East Perth ...... lead very well, marked on the the lead really well, marked in the pack and kicked a couple of goals. Won them the game. Give him a crack......

Would rather Ah Chee for Vardy. Ah Chee has shown hes pretty decent overhead, and would back him as the 2nd tall forward, but also a lead-up-the ground player.

Open up the fwd 50 for Jack to feast close to goal with Rioli, Ryan, Cripps at the contest.

No need for two ruckman... especially on a cold/wet winter day

Spot on. Lycett should be all the ruck we need. We played 2 before cause they are both solid. Vardy is ok but iant adding much. Ah chee can mark well just give it a crack

Agree with the comments suggesting to play one ruck. Plenty of other rucks play solo. Lycett isn’t a special snowflake I think he would go fine by himself.

All those ragging on Vardy , he has to be there given Lycetts past injury history. If Lycett was to break down which let's be honest has happened a lot in the past few seasons , who would ruck in they team if Vardy wasn't there.

That would be worst case scenario if it happened and you’d probably just have to concede the ruck for the rest of the game, even with Vardy playing. Wouldn’t really matter who rucked out the game because Scott going down would be the end of our season. Can’t go picking players “just in case” an unlikely scenario happens, pick the best team to win. Vardy isn’t a quality ruck so we aren’t gaining an advantage by having two in..

Playing just 4 talls (darling, schofield, gov, lycett) is a bit ridiculous for our structure in my opinion. Even the tigers (who are supposedly the shortest team in the comp) play 5.

The changes this week still leave us pretty standard wth 6 talls.

I do agree bringing in ah chee for vardy and reducing it to 5, but the extra tall defender is in to play the second key tall that is lacking with kennedy out. Alternatively you could play Vardy permanent FF and drop 1 of the tall defenders and still allow Ah Chee to be the chop out
