RESERVES SCRATCH MATCHES SCHEDULED FOR ROUND THREE
Gold Coast and Adelaide
– Sunday, June 21

This is more interesting to me than the match.

“There are three rules in football if you are going to keep it as basic as you can. The first one: you’ve got to plan to get the ball. If you’re not planning to get the ball and you’re prioritising defence, you’ll run second to the ball all the time, you’ll be beaten all the time. You follow your man, all you do is chase.

“The second thing is: use the ball. So plan to get the ball and then use the ball. Hopefully you get a goal.

“And the third and final thing is: if they get it, the nearest player puts on pressure. That’s as simple as the game is in its most simple philosophy.

“To say that you prioritise defence means that those blokes in the middle of the ground are going to be too worried about a midfield player getting the ball.

“It’s rubbish.

“Unless you’ve got the best team and the greatest defence and the best forward line, you’re not going to win. So you can’t pinch games by playing like that (defensively). I guarantee you now you’ll end up kicking five goals like they did.

“They’ll go up to the Gold Coast and if they can’t win this one they are gone.

“To actually prioritise defence, it’s rubbish.

“It is a rookie coach with a rookie idea. I’ll tell you now, it won’t work.”

It's so simple an idea it's revolutionary, but he's completely right. Prioritising defense, what does it even mean, besides "try to stop them scoring?". Teach yhem to play a successful style, not mitigate losses because you've got nothing after two games!

I want us to lose so bad

Betting has stabilised, even if kick off time has not.

Yep... If only!...

On Henderson... cant say i can ever recall many occasions, at either Adelaide or the Hawks, where I’ve seen him jogging around after his opponent.. see it nearly every single game with the Rat.. Rat’s easily the laziest player in the entire comp.
If you look at how much he runs during a game, it’s right up there. I don’t think you can say that he’s lazy.

Having a 220 game veteran on our list that probably wouldnt get to 100 games with any other Vic Club is probably the bigger issue.

He might. Just not at any of the clubs you want to be.

Melbourne, Saints, Bombers and Blues have been enough of a shitshow where it is possible.

Atkins is unfortunately the stereotype for an outside player. Both the positives and the negatives.

I want a wooden spoon to be the legacy of those in charge of our club, those who took short cuts, who hid behind weasel words, who shortchanged us the truth.
This! It's what they deserve.
I'd love Chapman to have to say in his next job interview: "Well, yes, the same year that I declared Brett Burton was a great Head of Football, he was sacked.
Er, yes, in my final year with the Crows they finished LAST, 3 years after playing a GF, but that was Pyke's/Burton's/the players' fault, not mine". :grimacing::grimacing:

Prefixed with ... well you see Rowey.

Atkins is also just a favoured pile on player.

There will be a game where we stink and a whole range of players will escape scrutiny, it will all be at Atkins feet. Exhibit A is Smith.

I've always backed him, still like him as a player, but I've lost my patience with him along with most others.

Yeah, what is it with Smith this year? He has been awful. Looks all at sea with no idea on how to play.

It's just Atkins gamestyle. He's not actually that much different week to week.

I have always had time for the Rat, but everyone expects him to crash in and hit blokes..... He will never be that guy, but he doesn't have to be. When we lose he always looks worse than he actually is.

As I said, Smith finished last year strongly enough to suggest he was going to be a midfield weapon. Spent half the game injured in R1 but wasn't great when he was onfield. Then last week he starts well, and we don't see him again until the final quarter pass.

I think if/when we get done this Arvo he's exactly the senior player Nicks spoke about last week

Alot of people don't understand that if our inside midfielders are getting smashed (which is regularly) our outside midfielders are going to look like shit. It's like they're expected to get 20 plus possessions or they're useless.
It's no coincidence Atkins looked his best in 2016/2017

Our mids are still getting plenty of ball, I mean the Crouches have combined for over 100 touches in 2 weeks. Our centre clearance numbers must improve.

Start Jones, Brad and Fog in there.... Just do something different.

I'd really like to see one of Jones or McHenry at most center bounces today

Sorry, but I think this DOES show how the game has passed Blight by.

The entire modern game is built around pressure, turnovers and rebound. Having small, fast pressure forwards and defenders is a widespread part of the game now.

Half the point of an audit is to show the entity is a going concern. "We'll be here next year, you vultures"

Odd thing to be arguing about.
It started with 1970crow claiming that the AFC is financially rooted, worse than many, many other clubs but we had not asked for a loan from the AFL because we didn’t want them to see our ”books”.

I called him out and he justified his many, many, many, many posts on this by the FACT that the AFC Auditor had expressed CONCERNS about the AFC financial position in the 2019 statements. As you correctly identified the only thing in the report was the statement that the AFC is an ONGOING CONCERN. 1970crows has insisted he was right (he was apparently a Director on a HUGE Not-For-Profit but had never heard the term ONGOING CONCERN 😱).

1970crow refuses to admit he misread the report and has disappeared faster than JJ in the 2017 Grand Final whenever this topic comes up.

Bingo. The ethos of focusing on defence is to build a culture of tough, accountable and uncompromising football. To succeed in this era (and all), that has been a consistent blueprint.

Creative freedom is good, and a challenge for this rebuild will be to incorporate it into a style built off those ethos. If Nick's can do that successfully and we might be talking about a premiership quality coach.

We tried the 'let's have fun' route last year. It has a time and a place (and we probably would have bounced back in 2018 had we gone that route in pre-season), but it was an unmitigated disaster.

Every team has players like that.

So? Does that make it ok?

Since when do we allow for players having NO want to get to and hit the contest?
Since when does this club have the luxury of carrying Atkins.

He allows his player to get to the ball without contesting and to somehow show he's trying he jogs after him with no intent to catch him.

The bullshyte fuqing excuses we allow for Atkins is that he's an outside player, not having a crack at you btw.

Atkins is what we don't need. He's now up to 100 games and served the same garbage for the greater % of those games.
For all the accolades he gets for his eliteness, exactly what has he done ?

We need blokes that hit the contest when its their turn, not avoid it.

Geez what a cop out of respinsibility.

Well in that case if our inside mids are getting smashed he might as well get a message to the coach to take him off and sit him on the bench uniil those inside mids lift their game.
