EMERGENCY - Seed, Atkins, Crocker, Keays

With Stengle and Milera out, any of the emergencies come in. Start playing the kids in their future positions and give them longer game time.
I'm confused. Your last paragraph correctly notes that Milera is unavailable due to injury, yet you have named him on the HBF?

Nicks definitely isn’t putting that on the younger players, he is absolutely backing them in for the long stretch. Under most of our recent coaches players like McAsey and Jones would’ve already been dropped. Everything he is saying is putting it on the senior players.

Let's hope so. I'm not convinced yet, this week will help one way or the other. My fear is that a coach that leans towards support for seniors/continuity etc will use the player's crisis type meeting as another opportunity to back them in. If EH is coming in, there's a fair chance that it's structural rather than holding a senior to account and we'll see Murphy as the out for him. And Sholl in for Rat. So we'll be younger and less experienced but still not crossed the threshold of holding senior players accountable for their form.

Hawkins took until 22/23 to really make a mark on the comp, Himmelberg is 21. His brother took time too and is an absolute jet.

His brother had great hands from the beginning though. You could easily see what he could become. I like EH, but he's not as exciting and should be tearing apart defenders here and there in the SANFL. Not every week, but the odd biggish haul.

Gee imagine that.

Tex, Berg, Fog and Lynch in the same forwardline. Crocker would look like Usain Bolt in that lot

I reckon we're gonna hold Murphy until Stengle comes back, gut feel anyway.

I don't look at it as a statement dropping. I look at it as Nicks wanting the to put a more competitive team out on the park which is his job. Every player knows you pick yourself by performing.

That last sentence is clearlay wrong. These players have had it drummed into them that as long as you bring experience, run your patterns, train well and be a good club citizen, performance is irrelevant. Nicks in his presser was surprised becsuse we'd been so good on the track during the week. How can a couple of good vocal sessions completely wipe from memory what he sat through only a few days before. It's time our coaches considered training form as being of any other value than to determine fitness for selection.

Saying don't trade Laird in 2016 is a pretty good call with the power of hindsight, so I'll Alex some credit there. 2018-2019 looks a missed opportunity, but I am not too harsh on it.

Would probably see if he's interested in a trade this year. I would like to get Sholl in and Laird looks like he needs a fresh start to get back to being a top footballer.

Would it kill us to see him run through the midfield and maybe swap with Murphy here and there? See what Murph has in our over-burdened defensive half and whether Laird has a knack up forward. At least he'd get a bit of a breather there.

People have been saying play the kids for years, but we've let middling AFL players chalk up 100 to 200 games, gold passes to underperforming senior players and we've lost players due to this fact who have gone onto successful careers at other clubs.
This finally might be the time that this strategy and mindset is done away with.
Once again our timing is awesome in a shortened season with no TAC cup or U18 comps to get a really good gauge of talent on offer.
Spotlight also needs to be on what has been for so long a source of pride...our recruiting led by Hamish. For the cupboard to be so bare is an indictment on the types of players we have selected and the way we have run new prospects through the seniors.

I don't care who they drop or bring in. I don't think we can win, but I want to see some heart and effort.

I'm 3 paragraphs in and nodding enthusiastically as you've nailed our issue perfectly. And then somehow go on to blame the talent ID guy when you've said we don't play his selections and they leave us for better careers elsewhere. He'd look a lot better if we gave his selections a decent chance.

The only way we get out of this slump is to hand the keys to the kids and say, you are our future, we put our faith in you. We are not worried about the result, just go out and play with flair, confidence and start building a strong understanding of each others games.

This is about them, not the senior players who look like they'd all prefer not to be there.
Good post.

Was thinking about that. My gut feel is that Stengle and EH in will see Crocker and Murphy out. The order is the only ? in my mind. Wouldn't mind seeing Murphy down back before he's dropped though. Given how much ball is down there it's strange the only change has been the Fish/Lynch swap. We should be seeing our back line as a midfield, it needs at least as much rotation given the workload.

Murphy has a loopy kick too. Seen him kick inside 50? I'd rate his kicking as poor and he would get done for size down back.

Thought some of these comments by the AFL Draft Central team might interest you...
Signorello has the acceleration that just burns an opponent off racing out of a contest, and he can impact the scoreboard as well. Signorello though will miss the class with a shoulder injury but has showed enough signs at school and TAC Cup level that he may be drafted. Murphy is more of a half-back that can play on the inside, who has a penetrating left boot that really stands out at this level. Jake Bradley is an over-ager that Carlton fans will be keen to watch, with the son of Craig doing some nice things, however is more of a rookie prospect than anything else.

A limited talent pool also affects the squad on match-day. With stars like Luke Bunker and Lachlan Murphy often tied-up in school footy duties with Ivanhoe Grammar, the team often lacked flexibility. Last quarter blow-outs have plagued the team all season as a result.

Lachlan Murphy – “Rejected time and time again at the next level, but continues to shine. His football speaks for itself – if you want a player to give you effort, Lachie is just that one to continue to stand up.”

Pick 38: MB
Lachlan Murphy
Small Defender/Inside Midfielder (Northern Knights/Vic Country)
04/12/1998 | 173cm | 74kg

One of the few selected for our “All Stars” match who didn’t score a national combine invite. Alas- I’ve been a big fan of Murphy’s work in the last month and a bit, whether it be at school or TAC Cup level. A nice left foot, who makes the ball spin perfectly off his boot each time he kicks it. Despite his size, he has rolled through the inside midfield- But looks best at home across half back. Begins on the bench, but can play anywhere.

Matt Balmer’s scouting notes:

#2 Lachlan Murphy
– I really like Murphy. Uses the ball effectively off his left foot, where the ball spins perfectly off the boot. Kicked two goals in the first quarter, but did his best work around the contest. Looks most at home off half back, but has the ability to play wherever he is needed. Also took a few strong overhead marks, which isn’t associated with players standing at 173cm.

His kicking generally does not look good at AFL level. He hit a nice pass in Round 1 but his forward 50 entries are mostly loopy and not directed well but that is team wide.

Happy to trial him down back for a few games but I think his future at AFL level is bleak at either end really.

I like Murphy, though I genuinely doubt he's anything other than a defensive small forward. Seems a bit in the Kelly mould of you know he won't take anything for granted but is on a timer just due to how limited of a player he is. Good depth for a club competing for a premiership, but probably more of a cultural selection than performance for a club trying to rebuild. I'm definitely more comfortable with rewarding bravery/selflessness then I am a lot of other aspects (i.e. how hard they train) in these positions.

Still, moving Laird into the midfield would allow Sholl game time, which is important as he's another promising half back/outside midfielder, and I would be using this time to retool our defensive line. Also, considering how pus Laird has been, a change to the routine/different responsibilities might just spark some life back into him. Personally, I expect it to require a fresh start at a different club, but we don't have anything to lose by trying it.

Obviously NFI the lot. Forward pocket or bust with us.

Watch some of his kicks for goal on the run. He's got a great long kick on him (especially for his size), his shorter stuff may not be as great though.

  • Rather than drop Tex, I would like to see them swap him and McAsey for a game or two. Give him a fresh challenge of playing in defence - at least the ball will be near him most of the game! He has footy smarts and is a good kick - two things the backline is missing. And Fish looks more natural up forward and seems like a decent contested mark.
  • Drop Brad Crouch to send a message - some of his second efforts and lack of chasing on the weekend was embarrassing. Give Poholke a decent run in the middle instead. It's now or never for him - if he can't get a decent run in this team then delist him and stop wasting resources on him.
  • Stop trying to make midfielders out of Smith and Seedsman - it isn't working. Seedsman is a winger everyday of the week, and Smith's best footy is clearly at halfback. He looks lost in the middle. Jones and McHenry need more time in the middle instead.
  • Gooch in for Atkins. Tell him he has the next 5 games in the team and it is make or break for his career. Give him midfield minutes and across half forward. He has pace which we desperately need.
  • If Nicks wants to send a stronger message than just dropping B Crouch, then also drop Laird. Try Murphy in Lairds role, and bring back Davis to play forward. There's no excuse for Lairds poor performances - he hasn't been playing out of position, and hasn't been starved of the ball like the forwards.

You say his kicking (Murphy) is can i say Average take a look at the Crouch boys, plus Laird's kicking they are in the same boat

First move have to make is sorting out the midfield and get different mix there and any change cant do worse.
For that reason I would have another look at Poholke and to play mainly mid.
Sloane would to a back or fwd flank or wing with no centre circle .
Brad would do mix of fwd and some mid . Leave Matt in mid .
I would try something different in giving Doedee some mid play and Jones would do mostly mid with only minor fwd.
Definitely bring a back up ruck in , whilst I still believe Frampton the answer the coach feedback leads to EH being first choice.

OUT
Atkins. (injured )
Seedsman
Murphy
Keays

In
Scholl
EH
McAdam
Poholke

Other thoughts think McHenry would only stay in if totally all about youth reviewing, but believe if it is about having a good mix of kids but to get more competitive then Hartigan or Gibbs might get a game.
They should play Walker at FF and Fog at CHF .
Whilst I am only dropping 1 senior player the message is given is if not prepared to lift the workload and intensity both with and without possession you will be replaced. Believe essential to get some pride and confidence in kids is to provide a much more competitive game rather than going berserk with the axe.

My defence for this week
Kelly Talia Murphy
Smith Doodee Hamill

Smith either performs or of to the knackery
Murphy if he shows something doesn’t have to star but a solid performance and leave for a few games
Brown to the bench as a back up and rotation
