Pick 10 and pick 16 remember not at the pointy end.

Who in the 2018 draft do you think will turn out "elite"?

My best guess would be Bailey Smith big chance, the King bros big chance, Connor Rozee a good chance, Nick Blakey a good chance, Jack Lukosius now a maybe, Izak Rankine a maybe. Then 5 or 6 at the next level.
We should have traded down.

Rozee.

Couple years in forward line, then a mid.

Hately over Jones too.

Could have got Jones at our second.

Ned...Meh

Wrong Jones would be wearing a Cats guernsey if we didn't take him where we did.

If hes going to be a midfielder, he needs to seriously hit the gym. Needs to be a solid little rock as he'd be up against some massive blokes in modern AFL. Chayse is in a similar position. That's probably my biggest question mark on the both of them as midfielders. I worry about whether they can physically compete. Would need to be absolutely elite in other categories to make up for lack of size.
Although Ned looks like he's put on a bit of beef since the last time I saw him.

Rowell has been mentioned as small mid with strength, i think that is a really good reference point.

For mids the size of Ned and Jones, they need to be thick little nuggets like Rowell.

Not impossible, but we're not making it easy for ourselves.

No argument from me on this. I was banging on about this with Mutineer, but I'm trusting his way superior identification skills on newbie talent.

we didn't want Rozee?..the pick to get him was obtainable - we just sat back and watched port do what we should have done first considering we had a better draft hand than them to start with
We did, but we wanted Luko more.

We could have got Rozee. Port came from a fair way back and there was openings via Brisbane and Freo.

Don’t even argue that, with hindsight, you wouldn’t do 9 + 16 for say 7, then 7 + Smith or Laird for 6. Or some other combo - it was doable if we really wanted to - didn’t have the nuts.

If we’d walked away with Rozee and Hamill - happy days.
Would have been pretty ballsy to trade Laird after an AA season and winning the best and fairest, do you research this stuff before making statements like that?

we had the picks to probably not even have to trade a quality player to have got to pick 5 and would still have been able to take say Hamill with our next pick

I'd have flicked Lynch not Laird.

Rory was/is still in the age bracket where he could help the rebuild. Lynch isnt, but he would've carried currency then.
No club is trading Laird after winning the best and fairest and AA anyway, it was a stupid hypothetical. Lynch was the one in hindsight.

Yeah it would have been ballsy. Would you like it now?

He’d had a good year in a terrible side. He’s icing not an integral or key player. Value sky high at that time too.

But agree with HS, Lynch may have got it done too.

Basically any of those 3 I would have driven them to the airport. And that’s not just hindsight either. I thought it was worth selling the farm at the time

Chayce size is very deceiving. He's an absolute unit. Shrugged off quite a few tackles on the weekend (especially that play in the second quarter), so he's not only at the point he can physically compete, but its something in his toolbelt.

They'll both be fine, 179 cm / 180 cm isn't at the point you are crippled by a lack of height either. It's not a Caleb Daniel situation where they're <170 cm.

Either of them potentially elite?

Or just solid A graders, ie Sloane, Crouch brothers.

Eh, I'd have Sloane as elite. Had trouble with the tag, but spent ages in the player rankings top 10 midfielders.

Still, it's a bit up in the air. There is enough there for both to push that far, but whether they do or not is another thing entirely.

2018 looking pretty disappointing, considering we had four picks in the top 21 (at the start of the night).

Other teams swooping in on first round picks in exchange for academy bid points hurt us. Imagine having Hately and Duursma instead of Ned and that fail of a pick swap.

I'm not sure which one:

Either 24 + >70 in 2019 for 28 + 24 (2019)
or 4 for 9 + 26.

Both weren't anywhere near fails. One we absolutely killed (the top one) and the other ended up as a fair deal. Arguably it ending up a fair deal was the fail, but that's not on our recruiting team, more every other part of our club and Carltons dead cat bounce.

He’s taller, but 5kg lighter. Needs to bulk up a bit although with that said, rarely see anyone break his tackles

McHenry is very Cameron like in that regards. Hits with a level of aggression and desperation few will get away from.

Are you telling me any AFL club would trade out an AA and best and fairest winner that same year? This isn’t PlayStation trades, it’s not reality and ridiculous to be judging the club on. It’s also not necessarily great for culture either. Sure, Smith and Lynch are worthy mentions for the time period we are talking, but Laird isn’t and I can’t believe you haven’t backtracked from it.

Many here were calling to trade Lynch a few years ago when his value was higher. We could all see he was going to taper off and was never going to change games but we gave him a big contract instead.

The trade that got us Hamill (and Worrell in 2019) was fine.

The other one ended up being a poor result - just a can being kicked down the road.

Would you trade Laird now? Probably not the right thread for it, but I'd be shopping him around.

I would

The caveat being you'd only do it for decent value. If no one offers us a top 20 pick or a decent first round upgrade then you wouldn't.

He's in the window of being part of the rebuild, and hopefully with Hamill, Sholl and Doedee coming their own.... And maybe McPherson, he gets less attention. Or maybe that's why we flick him.

If it's just a mid 2nd or up I wouldn't bother.

Not poor, just fair. It should be 19, not 26 as a note.

Mind you, end of 1st round + mid-first round for a top 5 pick is pretty much the definition of a fair trade. It costs a lot to get into the top 5. In the end, once you include the Sydney deal, we've ended up upgrading our 1st pick by 3 picks, and the second one by 10ish at the moment (though this should lower as GWS bounces back) so it has not been a bad bit of business all up.

The trade that got us Hamill and Worrell is ridiculously in our favour. Seeing we effectively got pick 28 for a 5th round pick.

Could be, maybe.

Meh. Get the next player.

Sorry, I hope I am wrong, I just don't see anything special in these two.

Both will most likely end up serviceable players. They aint duds.

But we could have done better.

You pick by your talent list.

You don't gamble on the 7th player on your list because your 11th might go in the top 10. That's just arrogance for the sake of it.
