In: A tap ruckman who can compete in the middle, Schoenberg, Butts, Scholl

Out: Hartigan, Mackay, Mcrouch & Mchenry

I don't care play 2 rucks if we don't want to hurt ROBs feelings. Lets get some hitouts going our way at centre bounces.

Ive seen enough of Mchenry for now. Time to go back to ressies and win some ball not run marathons getting sub 5 disposals a game.

I think the idea of 2 rucks in our side has real merit. Give strachan a go and maybe ROB and he share 50/50 with ROB resting at ff where he certainly can clunk the big marks. If strachan can compete well at bounces and around the ground that type of set up might work ok

I’m seeing people wanting Schoenberg in . I want people to tell me how we are going to play Jones, McHenry, Stengle and Schoenberg at the same time given they are all under 179cm. The other sad thing is we also have Lachlan Murphy also under 177cm, Matt Crouch at 182 cm , Mackay 181cm, McAdam 181cm , Laird 177 cm. .... it’s just too short. We are going to have to get rid of either McHendry or Stengle or both if we want to give Schoenberg a game. Personally McAsey is missing something for me. I know he young but I don’t see it with him. Would give Worrell a chance. Butts had a great year in SANFL so not sure why McAsey is being forced when Butts is the better footballer at this stage of their careers

Baker 173 com, Bolton 175 cm, Prestia 175 cm, Aarts 177 cm, Higgins 177 cm, Lambert 178 cm, Short 178cm, Rioli 179 com, Castagna 181 cm, Eggmolesse-Smith 180 cm, Houli 180 cm Graham 181 cm - too short. Hard to see Richmond winning anything.

Some of the comments on Ned have been poor at best, disgraceful at worst. But not uncommon to the people posting them.

He does need to drop the tough guy act, he's playing the game Keays is without the physical strength at this point.

However, try being a 6 gamer in the worst side in recent times when most of your senior players can't hold their heads up any given week.
The concern from me is he doesn’t seem to have any attributes to justify taking him at 16.

I think it was ST in a game day thread who said it looks like we drafted Lachie Murphy with a first rounder.

Savage as ****, but looking accurate.

I don't really get the hate on Kelly. He would be on an average wage compared to team mates playing in a defence continually under the pump. He is the least of our problems
Defensively, Kelly gets the job done. Offensively though, he's a momentum killer.

Many times he will mark the ball, and instead of playing on immediately, he will stop. He will then look backwards, sideways, backwards, sideways, and backwards again - never forwards - until the umpire calls him to play on. At that point he will either kick the ball backwards (usually all the way back to the goal square), or a dump kick down the line (having not previously looked forward to assess his options).

He was much better last night, and actually played on several times - probably causing several supporters in the stands (and watching at home) to faint from shock.

Nicks' game plan, as far as can be ascertained (given that we've seen so little evidence of it), is based on rapid ball movement. This works fine, as long as the ball goes nowhere near Kelly. When Kelly gets the ball, all movement stops immediately, and the opposition have abundant time to prepare for Adelaide's next move. This is why there are so many calls for Kelly to be dropped. It has nothing to do with his salary, or his defensive capabilities, it has everything to do with what he does once he takes possession of the ball.

It's not really though is it ?? Ned looks like getting the ball, he runs to the right spots and if not for another weird advantage call he would've had his first goal.

I'll say it again, how on earth you can judge a kid when the senior players are failing big time.

I can see things I like in other kids, but not so much Ned. Happy to be wrong.

I think he's trying too hard IMO, and the more mistakes he makes he gets worse.

Someone needs to sit him down and tell him to relax a bit.
Happy to let both he and Jones ride the 2020 journey uninterrupted, but there’s some legitimate concerns.

The one that stands out most for Ned is his kicking. Can barely kick 35m.

Jones has had some nice moments but he had a deadset shocker last night, let’s hope he can start finding some footy soon.

Ned’s set shot was a 45 m kick that just dropped short, not that bad for a 2nd year mid of his size. He will make those kicks once he builds muscle.

You'd hope so, but I would hope a player entering the draft could hit 50 m.

If you know its not your range, why go for it?

I'm pretty sure he can kick 50m, I've seen him do it before. On this occasion I think he was so worried about accuracy (he sprayed all his other shots so far) that he sacrificed penetration for accuracy and didn't make the distance

ROB smashed Ryder and Marshall in general play and had 6 hitouts to advantage (less than the Saints two but not that bad), he’s not the best tap ruck but he’s getting better.

He’s actually a better midfielder than the Crouch’s this season...
ROB does OK at the ball-ups around the ground, and boundary line throw-ins, because the opposition ruckmen stay on the ground and he can wrestle into position to win the ball. He gets absolutely smashed at the centre bounces, where the opposition ruckmen consistently jump all over him.

ROB & Crouch x2, in combination, are the main reason why we can't win a centre clearance to save our lives. ROB can't win a centre bounce hitout for love or money, and the Crouch brothers can't shark the opposition's taps or get into position to take possession on the rare occasion when ROB does get his hand to the ball.

Not to rag on Matt Crouch further, but I genuinely think he needs to go through a mini pre-season

Spend the next 2-3 weeks out of the side without playing reserves football with a pure focus on fitness. Then spend a couple of matches in the twos and work towards coming back for the last block of games.

He looks really, really unfit and that has shattered his confidence in his game and ability

No chance Brad gets dropped. Think about it. If he wins the BnF in 2020, when they do his calculations for Compensation at the end of the year, they will calculate it as - 2x Best and Fairest 2019/2020 - 26yr old with 100games under the belt -

Should attract an offer around 700-750k, After all - there is no trade involved so there will be a few suitors. We need to think long term, maximise his value.

Could be the difference between getting pick 2 or pick 21 for him.

People calling for him to be dropped have NFI. There's an enormous difference when guys like Lever come into our side because we were a top 4 type side with senior players doing their roles making it easier for them. At present these kids get dumped into the crappest side we've ever had then get supporters wanting them dropped because they don't dominate. Do people not get that most players are part of a system, at present ours is broken but dropping them (short of needing a rest) is the dumbest thing we could do.

Get the games into him, get another preseason into him and THEN we'll start to see more of what he can do.

Personally I like the combative nature I've seen from him so far and he'll get more involved in time.

Yeah, he looks a year off. I do wonder if the back injury last year stalled him a bit, but it is likely just a case of a young kid playing one of the hardest roles in the game, and getting overawed by it just because he's there more to pump games into him then Ned being a genuine forward. Probably needs another 10 kg too but that's a bit more long term.

Probably needs to relax as well, but I can understand that isn't an easy thing at the moment.

Genuine questions:
  1. Is Straughan capable in ruck, does he have a leap and can he give us some better service at centre bounce compared to ROB?
  2. Does Wilson have a defensive side, is he a two way runner? He's a big mid but if he applies the same weak arse defense as Matt Crouch is there an improvement
  3. Would dropping Mackay and Matt Crouch and bringing in Schoenberg and Wilson/Gibbs be any worse?

1) Our midfield issues are on our midfield. Not ruck. Reality is if a side is getting 11+ HO to advantage, our midfield isn't working hard enough to defend.
2 ) Pretty sure Wilson is injured, though in saying that, an injured Wilson is probably an improvement on the crab right now.
3) No. Though, I would consider Wilson/Gibbs a bit of a pointless move. Rather see Sholl, tbh.

I’m sure on the run he would be able to, set shots a very different equation though. Not every player in the comp can kick 50 m set shots easily and will usually hook them going for distance. This isn’t something only confined to McHenry.

Controversial, but out Chayce Jones. That was poor tonight. A couple of flashy moments and then... Missing for 80% of the game.

Was that his first game ever though ??

EDIT : my bad, just looked up, he has played every game this year.

You have to persist with the young guys, you can't buy experience, its comes with longevity.

From what I saw last night, if your people keep selecting McKay and the like, then they are virtually saying "yeah, we know you have poor disposal and decision-making but we reckon that's okay".

Only by dropping these guys are they going to draw that mythical 'line in the sand' and set a standard for everyone to follow.
