The only way I can rationalise Gardners inclusion is that the MC think they can get better use out of Khamis if he's not asked to play as second ruck.
Bevo doesn’t use defenders as second rucks unless absolutely forced to out of necessity. He’s said before it’s too disruptive to team structures.

They're missing Watson who's fully capable of tearing us up, Day who's their best player, and Sicily who may be out of form but he is their captain. We have no excuse.
Midfield of Nash, Ward, Newcombe and Worpel - realistically we should be absolutely destroying them at stoppage and putting the foot down from there

We won in Canberra vs GWS turning around a first quarter where we were the worse team and probably lucky not to be behind more by swinging Lobb forward and trusting Buss down back.

Since we dropped Buss we've been operating one short and I'm surprised it's taken us this long to go one tall again.

Focus should be less on Gardner specifically - we know what he is, a role playing utility tall who doesn't win/use the ball very well but is coachable and has decent athleticism and will compete whatever position he's playing. More what it means for team structure and flexibility.

Gives us far more flexibility if we want to use any of or other talls, English, Naughton, Buku, Lobb or even JOD in different posiitons, depending on the specifics of how the game plays out - we have slightly less flexibility with a different tall than Gardner.

theres just no evidence of upside to Gardy at all, break glass only. one of the luckiest in the AFL to still be on a list
Look I'm not pretending that Gardner is anything but a backup role playing big, but:

There is clearly evidence: 7th in our 2022 best and fairest. He's probably been a good AFL player over the course of a whole season in the not to distant past.

There is also clearly evidence: much improved VFL form in the last handful he's played, the reason why we felt comfortable picking him. 2 of this last 3 games have been excellent, the VFL thread includes people watching the games who have had to admit Gardy's played some good games.

Gardner to go the reverse Majak Daw and kick 4

Midfield of Nash, Ward, Newcombe and Worpel - realistically we should be absolutely destroying them at stoppage and putting the foot down from there
That’s what we thought before previous losses to Hawthorn.

Backline just looks a touch short of run now with 3 talls and no JJ. Dale is absolutely vital for us tomorrow and Bramble needs to get back to his run and carry best also. I wonder who the "7th defender" will be? Bailey Williams rolling back or Freijah more time at half back now with Adz back in? Cleary will be needed a bit more in the way of rebound now rather than watching a tall, imagine he might get the job on Ginnivan and Bramble on Moore?

When the hawks were flying years ago, they had a fringe player Tom Murphy, had some good traits but feable at times and heart in mouth like Gardy. I always said they'd never win a flag with him in the side and i dont think they did.
