Legit question, unlikely for the hawks game but what does Bevo do with Naughton when Darcy gets back? Does he play him higher up the ground? I didn’t think I’d ever say this but feel as though Buku is offering us more up forward at the moment.
Buku has been a great revelation but he benefits because with Naughton there he gets defender 2. With Darcy & Naughton in he gets defender 3.
Hopefully Naughton can get back to playing that roving CHF position he plays so well.

Out: Duyrea, McNeil, Jacques
In: Buss/Jones, Treloar, Baker.

Cleary's first bad game for the season doesn't mean he should be dropped. Keep getting games into him.
Cant have both VDM & McNeil who aren't good at kicking for goal. Also cant have both Bramble & Baker who have suspect kicking.
Bit harsh dropping Jacques before he plays. Poor guy didn't even get on the park. I reckon you meant Baker out. ;)

I get the support for Cleary and he is making some headway, but that was abhorrent. Under big game pressure under the Friday night lights he was shown up in a major way.

I am really hoping we give Coffield a crack as he seems to be building in the vfl.

Love Duryea but he is miles off the pace currently.

I don't think I could handle watching that game again tonight.

I agree, I want us to ideally have an extra two talls in this line up (Darcy + Buss / Jones) but not sure that’s the structure the match committee is interested in. We are going in shorter than most of our opponents when we have Buss available now, which I’m not in favour of.
It works against lower opposition because we have more class in other areas but against the really good teams I think we need more of a tradition structure to help neutralise those high balls & give our stars are chance to impact the game more.

Personally not a fan of the 3 tall forward set up because we lack good crumbing players and our talls and even some of our smalls compete against each other too much. As long as we are competing well in the air and intercept marks aren't an issue forward of the ball, I much prefer the 2 tall forwards. If you look at the last 4 games when we've had the 2 tall forward set up, the stats stack up well.

Geelong averages 15 intercept marks this year and had 13 against us.
Gold Coast averages 15 and had 14 against us.
Port are averaging 16 and had 13 against us.
Essendon are averaging 13.5 and had 15.

Essendon is the only one that went above the average but it does seem they have changed the way they play a bit and in the last 4 games before ours they were averaging 15.5 intercept marks in those games.

So we are competing quite well and we've put on some big scores. Having said all that, I wouldn't mind one more tall in the team (more so as a backman) as it would give us some more flexibly if things aren't going as planned, like in the GWS game. It would also give us some insurance if we have an injury.

And how is he going to learn if he gets dropped every time? He's shown himself capable at the level, now he needs to work through his growth areas.

Coffield would need to put together a huge solid chunk of games before being considered.

Duryea on the other hand is only going backwards at his age unfortunately.

Hawks have a very small forward line, Lewis still injured and Dear has just been dropped. I don't think this is the game to bring Jones back unless one of Lobb and JOD miss for some reason

In: Treloar, Coffield
Out: Baker, Cleary

Duryea and Baker should probably be two out. Been a rough season for Duryea and I think that might be it for him (I have written him off before and he’s come back strong), I feel like Baker has too many limitations to make it at this level. Clearly a hard worker but not convinced he can make it as the level above

Hello, please excuse the intrusion.

I ran some analysis after the Lions game as to whether the Dogs are struggling against key forwards. There might be a trend.

Where the round is not listed I couldn't find a key forward goal. Where a key forward kicked a goal I have listed it below.

A few of these games are probably nothing to worry about eg Curnow 3 and King 3. But then there are a few games where key forward duo's are having a day.

Is this a concern for the dogs?

Rd1: Larkey 5
Rd3: Curnow 3
Rd4: Treacy 3, Jackson 1
Rd5: Hipwood 5, Morris 4
Rd 7: Hogan 2, Riccardi 3
Rd 9: King 3
Rd 11: Cameron 6, Neale 5

Do not think Sam gets up for this game. However, if I was Bevo I would be doing a Chris Scott and naming him in the team and make a late change. Mitchell would be doing a lot useless planning to combat him.

Bit of a quirk how as at today they’ll play twice before play them (Lions/Pies).

I think once Darcy comes back it'll be a different situation than the opening 6 games as our midfield seems to be far more effective now that Bontempelli is back. Buku is benefiting from being the number 2 so I assume Naughton will as well. Good problem to have.

Darcy and Naughton as the two pillars, and Buku being the third forward. Buku showed he can play that role really well on Thursday night.

Then you throw in a rotating midfielder (e.g. Bont, Kennedy etc.), plus the small pressure forwards of West and VDM, I really like that forward line. and I really like the street fighter type players of West and VDM. You need them in a big final.

How the **** do we beat these pricks? We probably have to

We need to take a scalp like the Hawks for confidence and credibility

Losses to Pies, Lions, Cats, GC and lesser extent Freo we really need to beat a team like the Hawks

Yes all losses have their quirks excuses they are close losses etc but in the end they are losses to top 4ish sides

Hawthorn don't have the bye next week. They play top team Collingwood on Friday. Who do we want to win that?

It would normally be Collingwood in the general course of the season, but seeing we play Hawthorn the following Thursday would we want to be up against a finals fancy that has just lost its last three games? They would come out pretty fired up if they were facing four losses on the trot.

Maybe we just hope that the Collingwood game is a bruising gruelling one played in heavy conditions, whoever wins.
