What I'd do:

Conca Hamling Hughes
Young Cox Ryan
Aish Fyfe Acres
Henry Pearce Treacy
Schultz Tabs Switta
Meek Brayshaw Cerra
Serong Mundy Western Chapman

I'd have the 3 tall forwards so we can maintain two tall forwards without forcing meek to play forward when not rucking. Both Pearce and Treacy can spend some time in the ruck.

Henry and Western to give aish and acres a chop out on the wings as well as rotating through the forward line.

Chapman to be the back line rotation.

I imagine colyer will play instead of western and watson will play instead of chapman

Hopefully in the not too distant future we look something like this:
Logue Hamling Hughes
Young Cox Ryan
Aish Fyfe Freddy
Henry Pearce Walters
Sturt
Tabs Switta
Darcy Brayshaw Cerra
Serong Mundy Western Chapman

Playing 4 first gamers in the one game (especially the first game of the year) is very risky. Doubt we’ll do that. A safer strategy is to spread their debuts over the first 5 or 6 weeks.

I don't get the hesitation to throw Treacy in the deep end? We did it with Brayshaw, Cerra and Serong in their first years. It's not like we are expecting him to be our #1 tall forward target straight up - and it isn't like we are throwing him in a role he is unfamiliar with. He's a natural forward. He looks physically ready. He's a long shot to have any impact early but he looks more than capable of playing a role.

Give him a few games and see how he goes. If he needs, push him back to Peel to work on some things and bring him back when he is ready. I see this as an awesome learning opportunity for a young tall forward.

I think it's a bit the same with Walters out. We just have to commit to developing Henry. His ceiling is way too high to have him withering away at Peel. High half forward, give him a licence to be creative and set some realistic expectations. If he doesn't work hard enough defensively then haul him but other than that just let him build experience at AFL level, and encourage him to take the game on and show his x-factor.

Chapman is too good to be stuck at Peel for long. He should probably debut as a defender though, meaning a Rd 1 debut might be a stretch. As much as I think he could play other roles (and will in time) I think the evidence is pretty clear that letting youngsters settle in one role first is the high percentage play. Unless Hamling or Pearce are playing forward (they won't by the sounds of it) there probably isn't a spot for him first up.

Although I think the balance will be off by adding Blakely, I reckon that's who they'll go with for the remaining spot. Giro might have missed an opportunity to impress on Saturday because we could probably do with his outside run. Western's speed would help as well but after only one football game against senior bodies that was never going to happen.

I expect our Round 1 team will be:

B Hughes ~ Hamling ~ Cox
HB Young ~ Pearce ~ Ryan
C Acres ~ Fyfe ~ Aish
HF Mundy ~ Taberner ~ Henry
F Schultz ~ Treacy ~ Switta
R Meek ~ Cerra ~ Brayshaw
I/C Serong ~ Colyer ~ Conca ~ Blakely

Come Rd 2 hopefully Darcy, Logue, Chapman, Valente, Giro and Wilson are all ready to come in and pushing for spots. We really need Sturt available though :(

FB: Ryan, Hamling, Conca
HB: Young, Pearce, Hughes
C: Aish, Fyfe, Acres
HF: Henry, Cox, Switkowski
FF: Treacy, Taberner, Schultz
FOL: Meek, Brayshaw, Serong
INT: Colyer, Cerra, Mundy, Chapman

This is probably the ideal side for Saturday, I know Cox will be playing defence, but he's our best defender to throw forward, we'd be silly to not do it.

Every tall forward drafted would be envious of the opportunity Treacy has in front of him. Nobody expects him to win the coleman or even kick two goals a game - but if he does kick a single goal per game then he knows he gets a contract extension on reasonable cash while playing in a position that should mean the ball is directed at him ten to twenty times in the game and he only needs to turn one into a goal.

Even if he doesn't kick a goal but he takes some marks and works hard, chases down a half back not aware of the incoming pressure - he will have performed well.

The only way it doesn't work out for him is if he gets absolutely dominated and drops his head.

If I'm his manager I'm calling him before the game and suggesting that he just works hard all four quarters regardless of the opportunities that come his way, keep presenting, keep competing even if you're being beaten because you're keeping that defender honest and Tabs isn't dealing with the extra and celebrate ALL your team mate's wins. Get to them and enjoy the moments with them, keep them up and about.

Exactly, everyone knows he's not gonna be the second coming of Jonathan Brown in his first game, but it's better to just get him playing as many games as possible, let him put 100% in every game and his development will improve every single game.

I believe JLo came out and poured water on the Cox forward movement, at this point I think our options at this point are down to two, Treacy debuting I think is an absolute lock (unless injured of course, who knows what might happen in this weeks instalment of Freo's pre-season).

1- Darcy is fit enough and we roll two rucks to work Gawn over and allowing us to stretch the Demons defense, with May and Lever their only tall backs they would have to mark the resting ruck and Tabs which will give Treacy some room to work.

or 2- One of Hamling or Pearce go forward to provide an extra tall and Treacy will be doing the fwd 50 ruck work as he did in the Peel match which still gives us targets ahead of the ball. We might get pants a bit in those ruck contests but if we can plan accordingly our mids/crumbers should be all over the drop of it off Gawn's hands.

If it's raining though we might just play the two tall fwds but I think that will just leave Treacy a bit too exposed against Lever who likes to float off his man. If we are honest with our team we know our kicks will be long bombs to Tabs so having an extra tall to me seems a must.

I'd hope his coach is telling him that too. It aint rocket surgery. Present, work hard, contribute.

JLo said, today, that Darcy should be fit to play Rnd 1.

If this is the case, then I would rather him than Treacy. You could plonk him at FF and then have an occasional run on the ball to give Meek a chop out and build fitness.

Together they would make life tough for Gawn, otherwise big Max will just crush first gamer Meek.

We may lose a bit of mobility with Darcy instead of Treacy but certainly no aggression.

“We just need to take a long term approach and be (looking) long term rather than just looking for quick fixes.”

E.g. start having Chapman train with the forwards?
Or we could start blooding Treacy so when we are ready to contend for a flag, we have a developed KPF to rely on. Playing any of the defenders forward is a short term solution as they won't stay there permanently. Imo we should not be delaying his development any longer than necessary. We need to end our reliance on injury prone Tabs and Lobb.
