Well, by my reckoning:

Lobb, Sturt and Walters are def unavailable.

Injury clouds on Logue, Cerra, Serong, Ryan, Darcy and Valente. Darcy and Logue will be seriously underdone so will not play.

quite a few players are coming of long injury layoffs so are rusty - Tucker, Young, Pearce etc so we have to be pateint with them.

Looks like Meek will be ruck with a 1st game Rookie selection to give him a hand. Not ideal.

Assuming Serong, Cerra and Ryan are ok:

Ryan-Hamling-Cox
Young-Pearce-Hughes
Fredericks-Fyfe-Aish
Schultz-Taberner-Mundy
Henry-Treacy-Switkowski

Meek-Tucker-Brayshaw

Conca-Cerra-Watson-Acres

That means 2 debutants.

I think Fyfe is going to have to spend some time forward. I would prefer to leace Treacy at full forward and get someone else to give rest to Meek. Hard enough to debut already without the pressure of playing in a strange position

Okay, I’ll have a play. These injuries are cruel. I think Darcy – even if short of a run – will be better swapping into Lobb’s role with Meek, particularly given we’ll be up against Gawn in Round 1.

Ryan-Hamling-Cox
Young-Pearce-Hughes
Fredericks-Fyfe-Aish
Schultz-Taberner-Mundy
Henry-Darcy-Crowden

Meek-Cerra-Brayshaw

Conca-Tucker-Wilson-Would like Chapman but probably Acres.

Dark horse for Round 1 – Stefan Giro.

No one's going to be happy but I reckon Colyer and Wilson will both play round one after watching today, they're not the future but we're going to need a few of those hardened runners until the talent gets up to speed

Don’t mind either atm.
Walters gone, Hughes and young were not great.
Schultz was ok I guess
Henry good in parts but needs to slot the goal.

Id be looking at something like this
Ryan Hamling Wilson
Chapman Cox Pearce
Aish Serong Freddy
Crowden Tabs Henry
Darcy Treacy Colyer

Meek Fyfe Brayshaw

Mundy Tucker Schultz Cerra

man that forward line sucks nuts

If Hamling and Pearce are fit Cox has to play forward. Treacy is not ready. Tabs will have to pinch hit in the ruck .
Switta in Schulz out .Frederick half forward and Acres to the wing.
Hughes was close to best today, he will play .

Ryan Hamling Hughes
Wilson Pearce Young.
Acres Fyfe Aish
Frederick Cox Cerra
Switta Tabs Henry
Meek Mundy Serong
Brayshaw Tucker Colyer Conca.

I rather Tabs stay the whole game in the Forward 50.

Tabs might be forced to pinch hit in the ruck. Lobb sadly got an injury today.

If Darcy is unfit, Meek has to play.

Hughes use of the ball was appalling.

he thinks like Garrick Ibbotson.

he managed to drop the ball short so much it makes me ill.
Acres plays at Peel. Was horrible

Agree to disagree on Hughes , I thought he was the best of our backs.
Schultz is not up to it .
Switta, Frederick, Henry and Colyer all add pace which Shultz doesn't. Actually what does Schultz add apart from a tackle or two.
Acres is meh but apart from throwing in a youngster at the deep end he is the best of the rest.
Maybe Tucker to the wing and Chapman to the bench

Would have Frederick ahead of Acres maybe for a wing spot? Agree on Schultz. However he has 2 things going for him.
1. He NEVER gets injured. Appears to be made of actual steel. A very very useful trait when you are on the Fremantle dockers list.
2. He always does JUST enough to retain a spot for next week. Nice goal at the end today is a prime example after being fairly meh all day.
In a perfect world Sturt would be there instead of him and we’d also have a crumbing small forward on the list that actually has a knack for scoring goals (kind of like a not-lazy Brandon matera).
However Sturt seems to be built like a delicate glass chandelier and there’s no other specialist crumbing small forward on the list (Walters is not that type of player) that can kick more than 12 or 15 goals a season, so Schultz will probably play every game.

The absence of Walters and Lobb really changes the look of the team, so I reckon we have to reluctantly start Fyfe forward. Not convinced this is a good enough team to get over the Demons. That said the back six is very good.

Ryan-Hamling-Cox

Aish-Brayshaw-Tucker
Frederick-Fyfe-Switta

Meek-Serong-Cerra

Acres and Banners can have a crack at Peel.

In: Serong & Ryan.
Out: Walters, Lobb, Crowden (?), Chapman, Blakely & Banfield.

FB: YOUNG HAMLING RYAN
HB: HUGHES PEARCE WATSON
C: AISH FREDERICK ACRES
R: MEEK SERONG MUNDY
HF: TUCKER FYFE COLYER
FF: HENRY TABERNER TREACY
IC: BRAYSHAW CONCA COX SCHULTZ

I really don't think we'll make many additions between now and Round 1. It really depends how fit Wilson & Crowden are, and where Cerra is at, who I would rather us take our time with in his OOC season.

Stings to take Chapman out, who I would rather just make play, but I have no doubt he'll make his way into the side and keep his spot for good well before mid-season anyways. Hughes & Watson shouldn't be dropped for him, they should have a chance to keep their spot through regular season performance. Same goes for the likes of Acres, Conca, Colyer & Schultz.

As formulaic as it has been the last few years, I would rather us keep going in with the most experienced and disciplined players Round 1. Compared to previous years, we now at least have a enough depth (of somewhat quality too) and upcoming competition for those players' spots, so let them battle it out and keep the standards high.

Losing Lobb and Walters will make kicking a score a challenge

Cox Hamling Ryan
Young Pearce Hughes
Acres Brayshaw Aish
Crowden Treacy Frederick
Schultz Taberner Henry
Meek Fyfe Cerra
Conca Serong Mundy Tucker

I'm sure I've forgot somebody

Melbourne have good key defenders in May and Lever so we need something.

Post match JL didn't rule out the possibility that Darcy gets up for Rd 1 and that we play both Darcy and Meek - which might also help against Gawn. That would rule out Treacy.

Taberner and 1 ruckman as targets surrounded by quick smart small forwards might be the set up (although we'll be without our best) - but that would mean Taberner would have to come up the ground more often - because the ruckman would have to play closer to goal.

Who would the marking targets be in the Demons forward line? Jackson, Fritsch and Tom McDonald perhaps. We can cover them Hamling, Pearce, Ryan, Hughes, Cox - so there should be a surplus defender that could go forward.

Not sure we will play both Hamling and Pearce away from home in Rd 1 because of their underdone pre-seasons.

One positive is we bring Cerra, Ryan and Wilson in for Round 1 who are 3 good users of the ball by foot.

Round 1 team with lobb and walters out :(

switkowski and shulz are good at pressuring the opposing team with pressure acts. Easly two of the best at it.

With lobb and walters out we need fyfe and mundy up forward or we wont kick a decent score. If the mids dont push forward too its going to be a tough one against the dees.
Need the likes of serong, tucker, brayshaw to push forward when they get the chance to assist to get a decent score.

Ryan hamling young

cox pearce hughes

cerra aish tucker

mundy fyfe federick

shultz tabener switkowski

Something that Schultz offers ahead of some of his forward-half teammates is the energy and enterprise to actually lead up at the ball carrier or, at other times, to run back hard and make a decent position forward of the ball.

He's no Cyril Rioli but he at least he tries to make an option. As a result he at least creates a few opportunities for himself to score.

Acres plays at Peel. Was horrible

I said Acres was a spud a few weeks ago and people weren't happy. He is exactly the same player for Fremantle as he was for St Kilda.

Will have a few games of 30 touches and look like an A Grader and then go full Colin Sylvia and disappear for 3 weeks on end while shirking contests.

Fine as a depth player but we're not winning flags with him in our B22.

Everyone crying about a preseason game... Nothing's changed (including injuries)

We need to ensure we have good run against the Demons so Acres/Frederick/Aish are super important. Cerra/Serong/Ryan back in is mega-important.

Demon's don't have any scary forwards except for Petracca and Fritsch. We should easily cover.

They will win contested ball (hopefully Viney doesn't get up).

Cox Hamling Ryan
Young Pearce Wilson
Acres Fyfe Aish
Crowden Treacy Frederick
Schultz Taberner Hughes
Meek Brayshaw Cerra
Conca Serong Mundy Blakely

Normal format game and we need fully-fit players and combined with Melbourne's contested ball rate I'd play Blakely.

I'd play Hughes forward, don't know why they haven't done that. He is better than Banfield.

Wilson not sure about, if he's unfit then Conca into 18 and maybe Chapman/Henry to INT.

Gawn is going to run riot no matter what we do. He get's either a first gamer or Darcy off half a pre-season with Tabs and a 194cm rookie first gamer as backup. We should be planning to shark taps because that's how our mids are going to get the ball.

I'd play Treacy over two genuine rucks. It will be good experience for him and pure rucks make terrible forwards. At least Treacy can contribute defensively or if the ball is on the deck.

If you're Melbourne and you think Freo would be challenging you for a spot in the finals then given the ruck option drought they'll be physically targeting Meek. You saw how Nic Nat was trying to make his presence felt with full value tackles, like that but knees in marks. Like they did against Darcy the last couple of years.

We are so exposed right now.

Play Darcy as a forward, deep. Taberner roams, Fyfe chf. Play switta, and get rid of banfield. Shultz stays coz longmuir loves him. Leave Meek in Ruck, with Darcy rucking in the forward area only

Gawn is a quality ruck so even in a perfect world that match-up is tough. He has a much bigger tank than any of our guys so he is going to run our racks ragged.

The key is to make sure that this doesn't translate into actual game changing benefits for Melbourne.

So stopping him when he goes forward is going to be super-important. Pearce, in particular, will need to be mindful of Gawn in F50 so we don't give up marks + set shots inside 50.

At the stoppages we need our midfielders to win the clearance battle. Even if Gawn is providing first use, defend their mids hard to make sure they don't break away from the stoppage with an easy clearance. Hopefully we can cause a lot of secondary ball-ups. Push a half forward up to the stoppage to make it harder to breakaway if they win the tap.

So I would just go with Meek and use Cox/Tabs for a chop-out with the backs and mids mitigating Gawn's influence.

There have a plenty of times where a dominant ruck hasn't translated into much at the end of the game.
