Just on jack Williams he is closing in on 2m tall was 195cms last year when drafted and still growing . Not even 19 until the end on the year.

Josh Bruce is an undersized key forward like darling .

Jack Williams is not overly quick but not slow either . What he does have is a massive tank already .

Your right about being 2 + years away but once he fills out he will be more that Hawkins type power forward to complement allen the more athletic forward .

Jack is already kicking at least a goal a game in league as an 18 year old to go with 5 marks and 8-10 hitouts .

Really promising signs

I just don't think Williams has the talent anywhere near close to Hawkins. The closest comparison in the AFL now is Bruce and if you loook at his best years he kicked nearly 50 goals a season. If we can get 30-50 goals out of our second tall at AFL level each year consistently then he will have had a very, very successful career for the eagles. Bruce is 197cm BTW and his best years were due to his strength, hands and good kick. Sound similar?

I was a big doubter pre draft due to height but he has gone on to have a secondary growth spurt and is looking the size to be a Hulking forward. In the era of 2+ metre key talls Jack Williams isn't ever going to be a superstar. But i've seen him go from a tweener ruck to an AFL quality pickup and am happy to have drafted him and think he is AFL quality in the future. If long term he plays as our second ruck as well ****ing exceptional. I gather you haven't seen my post likening him to the Q-stick with much better hands and a better kick. Not peak Q-Stick kicking depth but is a straighter kick and isn't overly gifted in the Athletics department but looks the type to always be very strong for his size.

When drafting players you have to rate them relative to the competition and particularly with talls in 5 years time. If he ends up 199cm I will 100% give you this. He will be a better second ruck and second key forward than anyone we have on the list. If he's playing FF and ends up 199cm he will likely be lining up on guys who are 200+cm tall.

No, you aren't.

Since Simmo has been at the Eagles we have given AFL debuts to significantly (20%) less players than the AFL average. Even the BODE's gave debuts to more players (36). So, yes, Simmo shoud play the kids more than he has.

Our 2018 year shows you can play some kids and still be competitive.

However, only a small portion of AFL players debut in the year they were drafted unless they are mature age. So no, Simmo shouldn't play developing KPPs that aren't yet physically developed enough to compete at AFL level.

It was more a light hearted jibe at posters who highlight similar contradictions in the things people say

While there are 200+cm FFs I don't know of any 200+cm backmen. (Which makes me also wonder about HEdwards.)

Play the kids if they’re at least in a position to be able to compete. E.g Hough, Culley in a couple of weeks, Luke Edwards last year.

Don’t play skinny undeveloped kids who need a year or two of development just for the sake of playing the kids. At worst, you’ll break them. At best you’re setting them up to fail. Stick a skinny 18 year old KPF in the side against a strong team in what’s a certain loss and it doesn’t matter what he does for the rest of his career, some posters will still say “I saw him play at the SCG and he was terrible, he’s not an AFL footballer”.

Not mentioning any names.
One would say callum jaimeson was not ready (still probably isnt) for AFL, but hes showing something.

That pea hearted pleb your referring to showed little.

Maybe not, but even so we gave him more than two seasons before throwing him into the AFL. And he’s almost 22, compared with Williams who doesn’t even turn 19 until December.

Time to draw a line in the sand.
Time to flog the team we humbled in two gf.
Geelong can not win a games after a bye, their oldies take a week to get back to speed.
They will be wanting bruise free football.
Time for some bruises to be dealt out.
40+ probably paying $26, thank me later.
Doesn’t matter who we pick.

We’ll play with a team that’s older than the Cats.

First game back after a few weeks out, comes in as a late change, surely that gets him a free pass.

He’s had good games in the backline in the past, looking poised and assured. Saying he’s never looked like an AFL player is harsh, and short-memoried.
Nah, it’s the other way about unfortunately. He’s shown a little bit on rare occasions only. His very average to poor games outnumber the ok ones In the backline. When out in the middle or forward he’s looked more at home although I realise it’s a small sample

Guys Jai Culley has just had 32 possession 3 goals in the wafl. Time to bring him in!!!!!!

Out GAFF
In Culley

I value your opinion but I really do feel like you put too much weighting on height. Guys can have longer arms for height, higher leap or most importantly, read the play better/better footy smarts. For mine, 197 v 202 or whatever, it doesn't matter that much.

West Coast are on track to welcome back a trio of premiership stars against Geelong next week after Willie Rioli and Liam Ryan got through their WAFL return unscathed, while midfielder Dom Sheed continued his dominant form at the lower level.

Sheed, who kicked the winning goal in the Eagles’ grand final victory in 2018, put his name in the mix for selection in his third-straight outing for the reserves side with 34 touches in a 38-point loss to Claremont on Saturday.

Ryan finished the game with two goals, while Rioli showed glimpses of his star power through the midfield and up forward in his 13 disposals.

Both played significant game time on return from hamstring injuries, signalling a willingness to get their season back on track against the Cats next Saturday.
Midfield bull Elliot Yeo looms as another possible inclusion, despite missing a third WAFL hit-out while serving his one-game suspension for striking Swan Districts’ Aidan Clarke.

Pace ace Jack Petruccelle was among the other 11 AFL-listed West Coast players to take to the field at Revo Fitness Stadium, finishing with 16 touches in his second-straight outing on return from his own hamstring injury.

Petruccelle said he couldn’t see “magic” duo Rioli and Ryan sticking around at the lower level too long.
“They can do things that others can’t. It’s always good playing with them, they’re superstars,” he said.

The 23-year-old said it was a good sign to have so many Eagles on the park, even if it was a result of the AFL bye.
“It means our list is getting healthier and we’ve got more availability,” Petruccelle said.

Sam Petrevski-Seton, Luke Strnadica, Patrick Naish, Rhett Bazzo, Luke Foley, Josh Rotham, Isiah Winder and Jack Williams also featured for the Eagles, while mid-season recruit Jai Culley had a subdued first game in blue and gold.

It came with a host of big-name West Coast figures watching on. Captain Luke Shuey played kick-to-kick with his son Oliver - who donned an Eagles Indigenous jumper - during a break in play, while injured ruckman Nic Naitanui and senior coach Adam Simpson were also in the stands.

Star forward Oscar Allen signed autographs as he continued his role as forward coach, while midfielder Connor West was also popular among young fans, posing for photos around the team huddle.

I'm not excited about any of those potential changes. Sheed was like Tom Mitchell - a lot of touches for little impact. Ryan's effort just hasn't been up to par this season and I saw nothing yesterday to suggest any different. And Willie is underdone. Give him another week at WAFL level. I think the change that will happen will be Rotham to come in given he wasn't awful after half time. I wouldn't mind seeing SPS come back in actually.

I think Sheed had a better game than some others think.

I wouldn't call him in 'dominant form' buthe definitely has done enough to be recalled.

I don't know who comes out of the squad if Sheed, Rioli, Ryan and Yeo all come back.

Depends on if they will play Yeo in HB to begin with. In which case....

Sheed replaces Nelson
Rioli replaces Waterman
Ryan replaces Winder
Yeo replaces Foley
Gov replaces H. Edwards.

That seems unfair on Foley, but he has had a good amount of games in the seniors since his debut, and it would allow us to pump more games into Hough, who is our most promising teenager at this stage.

There’s more to being AFL ready than just size and strength. If you have pace, skill and composure you can impact pretty early (hence why Hough has contributed despite his slight frame).

If you or your role rely on a contested game then it’s pretty hard to get stuck in at AFL level early.

Jamieson is one I’d say is punching above his weight - he probably needs to be bigger and stronger but the positive signs are definitely there. By contrast I think we can all agree we want a bit more out of Bailey Williams, but I’m still quietly optimistic it will click eventually.

The knock on Sheed are the same things that's held him back from reaching another level for most of his career, he's slow as hell and there's just not much of a defensive side to his game

True.

For those who didn't watch the WAFL game, saying he had a pretty good game should be pretty informative.

I think most Eagles fans will assume he didn't burst from a stoppage, lay 10 crunching tackles and run 100m back into the d50 to apply defensive pressure

In: Sheed, Ryan, Rioli, McGovern, Jones
Out: West (inj?), Winder, SPS, Witherden, Nelson

Backs: Barrass, Gov, Edwards, Hurn, Foley/Duggan, Hough, Jones
Mids: Kelly, Shuey/Clark, Redden, Gaff, Sheed, Duggan/Foley
Rucks: Jamieson, Williams
Forwards: Kennedy, Darling, Ryan, Rioli, Cripps, SPS, Clark/Shuey
Sub: Nelson
Emergencies: Waterman (held over), Witherden, Rotham

Too many defenders to fit in, Nelson Witherden and Rotham all miss out. Edwards survives because of the Cats’ talls.

West was in the rehab group with Dixon last week, Dixon missed the WAFL this week so I’m assuming West is also injured. Sheed in.

Ryan and Rioli straight in. Yeo to play WAFL again.

At least he gets the ball I guess, something we've really had a problem with from our midfield this year

What did he do yesterday that shows he can make a difference at AFL level? What role does he play? From my perspective, Sheed didn't give me a 'we could really use him in the main side' vibe.
