I do have some sympathy for Gardner whose form in the VFL was very good and he was left out to dry on some occasions against the Hawks. However, it's the way he loses 1 on 1's with opponents that are more agile that concerns me.
I just want a team of players who are willing to work hard for 4 quarters no matter whom we select.

Lost me at sympathy for Gardner

The guy is simply not up to AFL standard and is quite easily the worst player to have ever pulled on the RWB giving him games we may as well start handing out McDonalds awards to the player of the week again

The 7th place B&F finish for Gardner was clearly a contrived result (we have a history of such things), presumably aimed to try to build his confidence. Unfortunately, it didn't have the desired effect, as Ryan never developed sufficient self-confidence to capitalise on his physical gifts.

I wish people would stop bringing it up, because anyone who watched him and the team during that period should be under no illusions that his year was anywhere near being worthy of such a high B&F ranking.

So you think the club completely rigged the B&F, ruining the integrity of an award with a long, proud history, to appeal to the ego of a role player? Or do you think it's more likely that the rabid vitriol that a bunch of toothless keyboard warriors spew online has culminated in a ridiculous conspiracy you're now repeating?

Ryan Gardner is a Bulldogs player. He's given no less than 100% effort to get where he is today, and never done a thing to bring the club into disrepute. While his team mates are off snorting coke on camera or skipping training on a whim, he shows up and gives it his all. So what if he's less talented than the likes of Sam Darcy? He's not deserving of the kind of treatment that many dish out on online forums. It's quite insulting to suggest that he didn't earn that place in our best and fairest. He was given a role, he performed the role to the best of his ability, and the coaches recognized that. It's quite shameful how poorly he's been treated in his time at the club honestly

He has played once this year in the AFL team and was HFF where he has been in the 2's

He is like Baker/Gards/McNeil good VFL players nothing more and we are better off getting games into younger players with upside then continuing to give games to guys who won't make it

We’re discussing two different things. I agree that Poulter shouldn’t be in, I’m just saying why I think people are more sympathetic to him than Gards

I don't think anyone is capable of replicating that downward trajectory.

Saints aren’t that big up forward - wouldn’t make sense to keep Gardner in. We turfed out Buss for match ups, can’t see how he survives.

Surely Gardner doesn't get another run. Buss was solid on debut demoted to sub and out. Gardner was horrible last week.
If he gets another run after that game and Buss didn't after his debut then if you were Buss you would be asking out at the end of the year

A criticism I saw of Jones is that he has lost his man a bit recently and fallen over at times etc, as if Gardner is not guilty of the same things.

I thought Jones was slowing down by the end of last year too, mainly in the GWS game and the final, but if the choice for a mature player is him or Gardner...Jones every day.
