Strategy Changes: Round 18 Freo vs Hawks

Yep. Only question for me is whether JOM is a better option than Sharp in one way or another.

JOM either plays the role Johnson did yesterday or goes to the wing. Clearly doesn't have the running ability of either Sharp or NOD but is he still a better option than Sharp?

My preference would be to bring in Sharp, see how he goes and if it's shite chase a winger hard at trade time.
Sharp might actually be better to play against the Hawks, width and speed. Erasmus will be useless. Johnson then plays more inside along with JOM.

We would not have a clearance deficit if Brodie played in place of Erasmus. Yes I know he's injured atm and all his negatives. But our biggest issue is not winning the ball in centre clearances.

The SCG is literally the worst ground to lose centre clearances on..
If Brodie was played and our clearances skyrocketed, there would be some serious egg on face for the selection committee....

I’m a believer in Amiss still long term as a high quality AFL forward, albeit beginning to waver slightly compared to a year ago. Still hopeful he can come good though.

However leaving him in that team now is detrimental to the guy in the long run in my view.

If he has many more games like that today he will be mentally scarred so badly it will affect his full career.
He looked distraught after those two missed set shots in the last.

Back to peel, kick a couple of bags, start feeling good about himself again. That is absolutely the right call here
On Amiss... should Freo be getting Sturt to mentor him for goal kicking routine?

Ryan/Pearce/Walker
Chapman/Cox/Clark

Jackson/Serong/Brayshaw
Sharp/NOD/Johnson

Bolton/Treacy/Amiss
Voss/Freddy/Reid

Worner/Wagner/JOM/Darcy

Sub: Banfield

Ins: Walker, Sharp
  • Walker in, we need him shutting down a quality small - ideally Watson. Sharp as the defensive winger, holding width and unrewarded running.
  • Frees up NOD to play inside, which feels like his best position.
  • Amiss playing further up the ground as a link-up CHF, pulls a quality defender or a mismatch + create more space inside 50 for Treacy/Jackson/Voss. He's got the tools for it - Size, Skills, Tackles well, speed and hopefully builds a bit more confidence without the stress of goal kicking yips. Reid, Bolton, Amiss kicking to our forwards? Yes please.
  • Would love to see Freddy play out the square a bit more - we saw bits of this early against GCS and looked great. Not many players have his acceleration and is great overhead + set shot. Might also address him going missing in games is he's more of a target.
  • JOM in to cover the big bodied centre mid, doing the unsung dirty work. Helps free some of the pressure from Serong and Brayshaw.
  • Banfield as the sub. Not he's biggest fan, but is versatile and can play anywhere.

Outs: Erasmus, Dudley (? - Struggling for other options at this point)
  • I like Erasmus, but we're just lacking for big bodies inside at the moment. He'll get there, just feel that Johnson offers more flexibility at the moment.
  • Again, really rate Dudley - just building on fitness and we can't afford to be managing both his minutes & Darcy's. Darcy currently brings more to the table, especially vs Meek this week.
Other Thoughts:
  • Would love to have Sturt back into this side, though he'll be no where need match fitness ready yet. He'll be in my Best 22 with everyone healthy.
  • 1-2 weeks away for Young, 2-3 for Cooper. More quality kicks returning on the horizon and if you think Cooper isn't walking back in, no way JL doesn't reward his efforts - learnt a new role and craft, earned his selection, took his opportunity with two hands and got hurt putting his body on the line doing the team thing in his 5th game. Inspiring stuff.

Inclined to agree.
Erasmus out for Sharp and JOM takes the inside role.

Just what to do with Amiss. Treacy has kicked 5 in the last two weeks, Voss 1, Amiss 1. I prefer players doing their role and spreading the forwards.

Jackson has kicked 9 goals since the bye. Really don’t want to see Jackson as the ruckman/forward if Amiss or Voss goes out.

Dudley only comes out for Switkowski.
Sharp for Erasmus
Walker for Banfield.

Watson this week then Elliott the week after. Walker has to play.

I suspect Switta will be named this week. He was listed as 1 week in the last injury report, so should be in the test category tomorrow (like JOM was before the Sydney game).

How you watch that game and come to that conclusion is mind blowing
seriously. ill give ras the benefit of the doubt in that hes got some more mass to put on but he looked vanilla as they come. pushed aside easily, not desperate for the footy, brushed off tackles easily.

mj broke some lines, takes the play on, and powers through the contest - needs more time in the guts for sure

Johnson gets caught HTB more than anyone else I’ve ever seen. I think he’s better than Ras, but not by much - that whole trio feel like a massive draft bust right now, hopefully they can find another level.

They'll get there. Amiss despite a down season still will kick his 3rd 30 goal season in as many seasons and is far from a bust. Johnson's & Erasmus are still putting on size and gaining valuable experience at the top level.

Far from busts.

How you watch that game and come to that conclusion is mind boggling

A lot of our fans have preconceived notions about Johnson being terrible, so they'll take something like his one play on advantage where he got caught and make some universal declaration about what a terrible game he played, completely ignoring everything good that he did. It's a relentless commitment to criticising our players

HAHAHA! Complete opposite, he does one good thing and this board gets a hard on. Then they ignore his weekly holding the ball, lack of vision, poor decision making and skills because they still believe "he could be anything"

He makes the same mistakes, and it speaks to his awareness of his surroundings. A midfielder that gets caught HTB on a consistent basis will not have a long career in the AFL.

Seriously you couldn't make this shit up

Brayshaw’s admission: Mids are fighting individual battles

Fremantle vice-captain Andrew Brayshaw has confessed the midfield has lost its team focus and fallen into the trap of playing as individuals after a disappointing loss to Sydney.

I remember people on here defending Sheridan's place in the team in 2015. He would make bad decisions and skill errors, but because he could run like bloody Forrest Gump posters defended his place in the team. Then the PF happened.

Finals are won by those that can handle big moments and this team just can't do it. Shai and Jackson need to be the guys in the team because the rest of the team have no idea what it takes to flag.

Hi folks. One of my opponents in a keeper league claims Andrew Brayshaw has suffered hamstring awareness. Is this true?
